My two cents
Although our dog does his business in the backyard of our courtyard villa, we do take him on frequent walks. When on a walk he is only allowed to walk on grass in "common areas" such as along outside walls of CYV's, along golf cart paths, and around mail box stations.
Although the mail station in our village is frequented by many dogs, I have not noted any problem with brown spots or yellow spots in the grass. Wonder why this is? Also, our dog is a neutered male, and no matter how many times he pees in our own yard, he always has some in reserve to sprinkle the occasional fire hydrant or bush. Errant pee episodes are not 100% preventable.
I always pick up any dog poop I see, but must admit it is far less of an annoyance to me than the provision of cigarette butts I see everywhere we walk. Smokers seem to toss them about with absolute abandon.
