Thank you Taltarzac for posting some information to bring facts to the audience. The idea that if you are against horse slaughter, you must be a Vegan is silly. Eating horse is wrong for so many reasons.
1. The meat is filled with chemicals such as bute (phenylbutazone) a carginogen, steroids, dewormers, vaccinations, etc. The EU is now no longer accepting American horses because of the amount of untraceable chemicals.
2. There is no way to slaughter a horse humanely..unlike cattle. It is a brutal ending. 3. These animals have been domesticated by humans and have worked in service, in partnership, as trusted companions...they deserve more than the horrific death they receive. No one in America with any moral sensibility would do that to any animal. It is torture. google horse slaughter video and you will be horrified to see what it really is.
4. Horse slaughter does not solve any problem with unwanted or over abundance of horses. In fact, it encourages more horses. As long as there is a place to dispose of a horse, responsibility for the animal can be avoided. The only solution to the over abundance is slowing the out of control breeding.
5. The value of horses is now tied to their slaughter value and until there is equilibrium in the market, the value will continue to decline.
6. From an economic point of view, dead horses reap no more economic benefit. Live horses produce values to farriers, feed stores, vets, boarding, tack and saddlery, shows, trainers, lessons, therapeutic riding programs, groomers, and on and on.
7. The entire slaughter pipeline is driven by deceit.. from the auctions to the truckers to the foreign owned plants. The slaughter folks say the horses are old and sick and they are doing a service. The reality is they leave the old and the sick and take the young and meaty. Think about it. Why would they want the old and infirm? The USDA states that 92% are between the ages of 5-12, in the prime of their lives. So slaughter is no solution to the "unwanted" horse.
