Yes, it's mono. The footer is reinforced with rebar (usually 2) all around and if it was deeper than a foot (hence the name), it wouldn't matter in most cases if some of the ground collapsed beneath it. Of course, the more ground that collapses, the larger danger of the slab cracking and bending off due to excess weight without support. That being said, more is always better when it comes to foundations.
I had an investor one time that loved to buy problems like that and fix them. I learned a lot from him.
