I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at because we still have freedom of religion. We are free to be as religious (or unreligious) as we want to be. And, as far as I know, we still have the same form of government with lots of checks and balances.

Note: You could have thrown in the institution of marriage; back up 150 years and there were a lot less divorces. Was that better or worse?
