IMO early 50s is much too young to retire. But, on the other hand, if you hate your job, or your job hates you, you are tired of living in the cold and snow and you can afford to make a big change in your life, then try moving to TV, but don't consider it retiring. Take some time to ease out of the working mode and then look at some of the volunteer positions available here. You could make an enormous difference in people's lives in the surrounding community and it would also keep the old grey matter churning over intelligently - one can only play for so long before that gets boring. This area is growing rapidly and with it will come some part time jobs which you might enjoy.
We were both fortunate, had great jobs, were compensated very well for working, loved our life in the snow belt and thought we would stay there for the rest of our lives. Then, out of the blue, we were both offered retirement packages we could not refuse and realized very quickly we could not do winter without working, so we rapidly found ourselves enjoying every day in TV. We have been able to live our lives to the fullest both working and retiring.
