If I add the eastern states will I lose the map with Canada? Surely I don't need a new GPS after a year!!! What is a micro SD card and would it hold enough for a few more updates? Any help is appreciated.

The current full coverage map file is about 1.7 gig bytes in size and they are getting larger with every update. This covers all North America. Also if your unit supported Junction View the file can be either 775 meg for full screen or about 460 meg for half screen.
Memory cards are very cheap today and I would add at least a 4 gig card. The latest firmware updates on many of the Garmin models will automatically store the files on the SD or micro SD card if not enough space is available in the core memory. Now to be safe you should check and see if your firmware is up to date and then do the map update.
A comment about Junction View. This is a feature that Garmin has added to the GPS that will show an almost real life picture of upcoming interstate exits and it will show you what lane to be in for your route of travel. The difference in the two screen sizes is that the full screen pops up on the display about .8 of a mile before the intersection and stays on for only about .2 of a mile or a few seconds depending on the speed of travel. The half screen version appears until you pass the intersection and only takes up half of the screen so you can still see your route. I have tried both and will be sticking with the half screen version.
