There are some really nice Ranch homes for around the same price as a Patio Villa but are a more open concept and much brighter inside : ) Another fact we noticed is how closed in it looks when you are at the beginning of some of the Patio Villa neighborhoods looking down the street and see some very overgrown trees etc... that seems to "close the neighborhood in" even more. One thing that can be done (in part) about the proximity of the other adjacent patio villas would be to buy a corner lot, though that comes at a cost.
The darkness inside is easily addressed by adding solar tubes as appropriate. They do wonders to brighten up darker areas of any home.
