mulching with stone is the best option to avoid regular replacing/refreshing of aging mulch.

Rocks are also the better option to minimize bug infestations.

Rocks are really not bad for plants if the rock placed around the plants properly....experienced rock providers and nurseries will tell you to be sure to keep the rocks away from the trunk of ANY plant....make a circle around the plant stock....we have had rock mulch here and at previous homes....never lost a plant due to rocks.....ditto for most that have it.

Lava rocks are the last choice recommended as the small holes and pourous nature of the rock.
