At this point though, I'm all but convinced that the slashes occurred in the unpacking of the tires at the dealership where they didn't realize it occurred, and that the slashes were not all the way through at the time, but over time worked themselves open enough to start leaking air. Also where someone else suggested it might be a coverup by the dealer, I say that I don't think for a second that their was a coverup of any kind.

That sounds like a plausible scenario. The dealer changing the tire for free seems to indicate that it has happened before.
