People who are athletic often eat lots of highly refined carbs because they need the fuel for their workouts. Personally, I don't think it's anything to brag about. They may appear to be getting away with it but who knows what's going on inside the body.
There was a big story in The Wall Street Journal many years ago about a young man who was into fitness training and ran about 10 miles a day. He was going to get married so he wanted to get a complete physical beforehand. His PSA reading was high so he went for a biopsy and found that he had prostate cancer at age 30.
