Completely understand - It was a decision the Director/Producers made before production. So, it's more like an Operetta. If I never saw the stage Musical or knew the story - that would have put me off - and many guys. But compared to the Theatre productions, the movie's script/dialogue in song is much easier to understand.
Perhaps best that moviegoers know the operetta style going in (esp the guys...)
But (guys...) if you can past the singing - it's a great movie. Lots of action, great cinematography, wonderful acting, and the songs/music fantastic. Of interest - the actors do not lip sync pre-recorded studio music. In every song they actually are singing live while acting and the orchestra then recorded the music to match their singing later. From what I see this is a first in a major film. Ann Hathaway, although only in a total of 18 minutes of the movie is breathtaking, and a solid favorite for Best Supporting actress. She lost 25 lbs and cut her hair very short for the part - same with Hugh Jackman for his leading part. Believe me - seeing this movie is well worth the ticket price and your time. And the story has such wonderful messages - redemption etc.
