The St. Petersburg Times, which is now the Tampa Bay Times. The paper won many Pulitzer Prizes and was considered one of the best small town newspapers in the country. I also read the Evening Independent and my first job was when I was 15 and was a scorekeeper for the men's softball leagues. I would have to write a story about the games which would appear in the Independent the next day. I would get a lot of players buying me hot dogs and soft drinks so I wouldn't forget their names.

It was also one of the reasons I became a Seminole Fan. In the 1960's when Steve Spurrier was a Heisman candidate and eventually a winner, the paper would feature pages and pages of blue and orange photos of the Gators and the lowly Seminoles would get a small caption story. Since I'm normally a fan of the underdog, I became a FSU fan about that time. In 1975 when Coach Bobby Bowden arrived on the scene in Tallahassee, the Gators because the lesser team throughout the 80's and much of the 90's as the Noles finished in the top 4 for many of those years and won two National Championships.
