You've received some good suggestions so far, but I'd like to share an experience I had this week that may or may not be relevant to your problem or be a solution.
For some time we've been having a slow connection. About a month ago we lost both internet and phone Comcast service. After trying by phone to fix the problem unsuccessfully, a service call was schedule., Comcast got things working again when he arrived.
Things continued to be slow, but I just wrote it off as slow internet conditions. About a few weeks ago certain websites where hanging my browsers, then we again lost our connection and phone service on this Monday. After again being put through the hoops of doing the same thing I went through 3 times before calling, Comcast decided to schedule me for a service call on Tuesday evening.
When the service tech arrived, he again tried the same things we already tried, then proceeded to test some things out. What he found out is that one of the signal cables needed replacement as well as a signal splitter near the cable modem as well as one outside at their service box at the back corner of our property. End results is that everything is back to normal with a noticeable increase in the speed of the computer.
Now I'm not suggesting that you go call your service provider right away, but if other suggestions lead you to a dead end, then you should consider contacting you provider and ask them to send out a tech to check out your connections, splitters and cable wires to see if there are any defects or if they're not performing to specifications.
