my guess is gout IF the toe is painful all the time - OR - semoiditis if the pain happens when you are walking on it.
i would have preferred a blood test re the uric acid, at least to confirm the diagnosis and then to plan my dietary changes accordingly.
have you looked up the foods that can bring on an attack of the gout to try and identify food as a cause of the pain. biggest surprise to hubs and i came from finding out from a television news health snippet that strawberries are a major contributing factor for a flare-up! added them to our 'do not eat' list - and that is a killer when wintering in florida!!!
