Almost all water softeners don't filter the water they only soften it.
Some have carbon but loose carbon not a carbon bloc, big difference between those, loose carbon allows pass through due to channeling, this is because water can push the carbon around finding a channel to essentially bypass the carbon.
So what you get is chlorine, sediment and metals to cook and shower (fill your pool & spa.....
to stay safe.
Hard water has not been reported to be unsafe.
