Quite frankly, I think it is the opposite. When I worked, if I showed up 5 - 10 minutes late, it was no big deal. Many jobs these days are flex time and nobody makes an issue about being at work at a specific time. However, as you point out, dinner reservations, tee times, doctor appointments, movie times, etc. are all inflexible.
