Where in Minnesota do you live? I lived in Minneapolis when I was in college at the University of Minnesota. I don't remember there ever being "WEEKS that it doesn't get above ZERO." I don't remember extended cold periods like that when I grew up in North Dakota either.
In face, the record in Minneapolis for the longest stretch with temperatures below zero is 186 consecutive hours (8 pm December 31, 1911 to 1 pm January 8, 1912).
