Since it is golf, it can best be described as " the rub of the green". Sometimes works to your advantage and some times not. Accepting your hypothesis that there is an advantage gained I would venture to say over a year most golfers would gain more of an advantage ( by not having a scheduled tee time the day there are no cancelation points) than be disadvantaged ( by having a reservation on said day and not playing).

Besides, who among us thinks golf is fair in the first place?
