As I understand it the tricolor will always have a reddish area on the anterior neck. The eye color on the tricolor is a fairly intense red. The tricolor has the long elegant neck of the great blue or an egret.
The green heron is more squat with yellow eyes and also has a white underside but no red area on the neck.
