We carry because we feel there is a real need. It doesn't mean we're afraid all the time. It doesn't mean we will pull our weapon out at the slightest provocation. It does mean that should the need arise, we are able to protect ourselves and those we care about.

Personally, I can never imagine pulling my Glock to protect my property. You want my stuff, be my guest but you give me even the slightest inkling that you mean to harm me or mine, be prepared to get shot and I was not taught to aim to wound. And, yes, I am willing to suffer the consequences should that happen.
Couldn't agree more.
I have been shooting for over 30 years - pistol, rifle, trap, skeet etc. I was a trained range instructor for about 10 years. Even when I thought I heard something "outside" I have yet to grab my gun. Besides, I would never just walk outside to look - that would give the perp a distinct advantage over me.
No, I don't carry in The Villages but certain times when I leave here I do. Believe me you do not have to fear me. Or, I suspect, 99.9% of legal carry permit holders.

As the saying goes - I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it!
