Shouldn't the health department have something to say about that? Even in restaurants, certain rules must be adhered to. Shouldn't the farmers markets have to apply for permits and follow health standards?

Dogs are allowed in the squares, period. And they always have been. During any event, including vendor nights, there may be food sold on the square.

I don't see how dogs walking around the square during the "farmers market" should be considered a health issue. They're walking on the ground...they're not sneezing, coughing, picking their teeth and/or their noses, and then handling the produce like the humans are. (Have you ever people-watched at the farmers market?).

I agree with others about the heat concerns when it comes to taking pets anywhere...but I have a problem with people complaining about pets showing up where pets have always been allowed!

One of the reasons I moved to The Villages was because of its pet-friendly reputation. I'm very discriminate about where I take my dogs (for their sake). I look out for their well-being, as I'm sure most pet owners in The Villages do.

The other day I went shopping at Winn-Dixie. As I came out of the store and got to my cart, I noticed that the woman in the car parked next to me had reached her vehicle at the same time. She opened the car door and two dogs jumped up, panting and obviously glad to see her. "Well", she said, "that's what you get for insisting that you come along!".

Evolution, adaptation, I don't know. Dogs who wear clothes, sunglasses, and shoes, ride in strollers, enjoy happy hour ifrom the comfort of a purse, go shopping, and basically are with their humans 24/7 must surely talk!
Do-do-do-do.

I thought I read that dogs are not allowed during farmers market times. I saw a sign or heard it on our radio station. I would not have known if it was not for that.

I have always defended the rights of dogs on this forum. For their sake. I'm against dogs on hot pavement, pooping/peeing in people's yards, and running around loose, dyed pink, riding unrestrained in golf carts.

This is the first place we've ever lived where dogs were allowed in farmers' markets. Mine is tall enough to sniff a peach pie that you couldn't take home and wash. (But he doesn't go to farmers' markets.) If it's legal, fine, but curious that the health department allows it.

You are correct, Bare.
That woman would be dead meat had I been there.
It seems like all we've been hearing is about children and dogs in cars in this heat.
What is wrong with these people???

My guess is that woman was embarrassed she got "caught" leaving her dogs in a hot car and tried to blame it on the dogs in front of you. Where's bonanza when you need her?

Martysmom 08-04-2014 09:33 AM

We have a lady that walks her dog at least 10-15 times a day on our street. All hours of the day, all temps. Sometimes that poor dog looks like a dancing chicken walking on the pavement. I said something to her one day and she said she didn't want the dog doing it's business in her yard and that's why she walks him so much. Wow!

She should be embarrassed. It's inhumane and against the law.
There is no possible excuse for trapping innocent children or dogs in hot cars.

The disgusting thing is trying to blame it on the dogs.

My friends in MI left their very hairy Keeshund in the car one day. It was 70 degrees out, so they thought he would be okay. Someone in the parking lot called the police. The cop really chewed my friends out. They were ticked! I was secretly glad. I hope they'll never do it again, but I'm sure they became defensive enough to convince themselves they did nothing wrong.

Like people say frequently on TOTV, sometimes you can't fix stupid.
