Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 3 burglary of a Village of Bridgeport at Miona Shores home.
Sumter County sheriffs deputies have arrested 20-year-old Derrell Harrison Jr. and a 16-year-old male in connection with the burglary that took place in the early morning hours while a Villages couple slept.
This was a completely random crime, said Sumter County Sheriffs Office Lt. Bobby Caruthers. We have found no connection between the suspects and the couple.
The suspects tripped themselves up by using stolen bank cards in Leesburg and Winter Garden.
They had also taken a 50-inch television, digital camera and Macintosh computer. The TV was later discovered by the side of the road.
The burglars gained access to the home by tearing out a lanai screen, according to the sheriffs office.
On Tuesday, Sumter County detectives arrested a 16-year-old juvenile from Coleman. He was charged with one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling and one count of grand theft.
Warrants were obtained for the second suspect, who was picked at his residence on charges of one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling, one count of grand theft and one count of fraudulent use of personal identification.

Glad they caught these idjits. What an absolute waste of their lives. So young to mess it up so badly. Now they need to catch the thugs breaking into the homes further south. And, of course, the punk who mugged the lady in the parking lot.
Wow! Really does seem like a lot of crime in a short period of time for here. Hope all are caught and things go back to "normal".

The whole thing is so sad. So young. That said I'm so very thankful that one of the crimes has been solved (breaking down doors & mugging being the others). I'm so conflicted on the whole thing. I don't see any benefit of a short meaningless sentence, so I'm hoping for a lengthy deterrent type sentence. But I'm also hopeful for some type of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation has to start from within (the person that committed the crime) IMHO. But I'm not sure there is a lot if any rehabilitation going on in our penal system currently. The alternative is an endless cycle of wash, rinse, repeat.

I hope they keep them behind bars so they don't do it again. By the time you are 16 and 20 you already KNOW it is wrong to steal from people and they are obviously able bodied enough to work at any number of jobs.
I don't feel sorry for them at all. The teachable time for morals has passed. That happens in the first five years.

chances are they will continue their life of crime. Recidivism is greater for young males because they develop a history o crime and because they are released and re-released while still young. I watch 60 minutes

Like everyone, I'm glad law enforcement nabbed these two kids. But, what's troubling about it, is this is the first instance I've heard of where criminals just decided to target TV, with no prior casing of the place. And, in addition, they broke into an occupied house in the middle of the night. I hope this is not a trend.
On another level it illustrates other things ... obvious things actually.
1. There are a lot of very poor and in some cases desperate people living around TV. They view us all as being "rich" thus, like Willie Sutton, they go where the money is.
2. While the article has nothing about these two "youths" background, the chances are high they both come from single parent families and most likely have never truly been exposed to what most of us would recognize as right vs wrong.
3. Which means ... this will probably happen again.

You are right on this, in Florida they just build more prisons.

I was raised in a single parent environment.
Mom taught right from wrong very strictly...
I just don't accept the single parent excuse.

Yeah... I too find the statement about single parents very broad... and offensive. It may or may not be true in the cases, but that's quite a generalization and offensive to many.

Actually, I did not intend it to be an excuse but factual and partially explanatory of the behaviour. These young criminals were either not taught the difference between right and wrong, or if they were, they could care less.
In the cultural instance I was using it I think the generalization is accurate.
If you happen to find it offensive, well then that's how you view it I suppose.

I'm glad they caught these guys and kudos to law enforcement for that. I believe that even youngsters know better than to take someone else's property. I do not believe in rehabilitation. I believe some form of unpalatable punishment is in order i.e. leg chains picking up trash by the side of the road for six months straight or send them out to Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Phoenix, AZ for six months. That would make one stop and think before committing a crime against someone again; but my question is where is justice for the poor victim(s) that have been violated?

If that's the case then why are crimes still being committed in Phoenix? I fully support Sheriff Arpaio and wish there were more like him. But I'm pretty sure he would tell you he'd like to see them rehabilitated so they don't keep coming back his way.
