View Full Version : Actual Doggie Dining Proposed

According to a media source, dog dining at Square 1 Burgers has been proposed by Square 1 to the Wildwood City Commission.

There would be a special menu for dogs. This, of course, would only be allowed on the Outside Patio area not inside dinning. Apparently Square 1 Burgers and Bar has something similar at some of their other restaurants.

I just wonder what the Servers think of such an ordinance permitting dogs to dine alongside their owners and other customers? Will they give the food directly to the dog or give it to the owner to serve the dog?

Lots of public health issues and who is going to enforce the rules and regulations concerning such activities?

This ordinance, if approved, will certainly elevate Fido's status in TV. :icon_wink:

There are many reasons for, or for not, patronizing a restaurant. In this instance it is dogs permitted and dining on the patio. If I feel this is a negative I simply cross it off my dining destinations. In doing so I will make room for someone to bring their dog to dine with them.

There are dozens (hundreds) of restaurants readily available to us. They cater to numerous customer bases. One of them is catering to people who want to dine on the patio with their dogs and I feel that is no big deal.

I would hope this thread does not "get ugly". Threads that turn acrimonious do great harm to our image.

There have been several Threads regarding dogs and restaurants. See post #13 for a list provided by Bogie Shooter.

Its pretty obvious that many residents of TV love their dogs and want to take them with them wherever they go including the Squares and some to the restaurant. Others love their dog and prefer to leave them at home.

What makes Square 1 Burger's proposal different from all other restaurants in TV is you could take your dog and they propose to offer a menu for dogs at their outside patio. In others words, you will be able to not only eat a meal your dog can too. This is very different now that the dog will be eating on the patio too.

I have observed that a dog can and sometimes does becomes very aggressive around what is their food. Get too close to their food and some will snap or bite you thinking someone might be taking their food. My own dog didn't even like me "messing" with his food after I had given it to him.

We rarely eat on the restaurant patio because of the smoke. A dog eating on the patio sounds to me like an accident ready to happen. I hope a Server isn't hurt.

dog friendly on the patio!!!

A non event in most civilized countries of the world......AND for the most part here too.

I am sure Square One's experience in their other locations are a testament to the practice NOT affecting their business.....why else would they do so here.....because for the most part it will be a non event and for some even a +!

And that makes you a responsible dog owner, but there are many dogs in The Villages that could handle this situation no problem so why shouldn't they be welcomed to dine at Square 1 on the patio???

I wouldn't bring mine either 'cause I know they wouldn't behave properly, but I certainly enjoy seeing the well behaved pooches enjoying their time out.

I agree. I do not think I would take a dog to a restaurant but if your dog is really well behaved and you feel the need for canine companionship while dining....

My current dog Beau is too much of a beggar for food and a lap dog. He would be very confused if he was forced to choose between a lap and a piece of baked chicken. My former dog, Sport, would have been busier looking for somewhere to dig and not finding it in the concrete. Sport would be looking at the bordering plants and such for any kind of sign of a critter to dig up.

The fat cocker spaniel Amber we had would have loved this idea but she was blind and would be walking into the chairs.

Our Dalmatian, Ashes, would probably chase her tail, bite it, and spread blood all over the diners. She had done this in my car when I was coming back from Virginia Lake in Reno, Nevada and I had been very relieved to arrive home without having been stopped by some cop we thought I had some murdered body in the trunk and was the world's worst hit man with the blood still smeared all over the windows. I also do not think she could have stood still at a restaurant long enough for me to eat anything. Talk about hyperactive!

Good point. I would go there but without my dog. I always liked to people watch. That was one of my favorite past times when I lived in Reno and was too young to gamble. Watching people interact with one another is quite fun and if you throw dogs in the mix too.

Just a note on Jim Hill. I don't suspect this will effect too many folks, but it's good to know...Mr. Hill DOES NOT service anybody who doesn't live in TV. I called him, and he was very polite, but told me he doesn't work outside the boundaries of TV. He suggested Window Genie out of Leesburg for me.

While this is confusing, I do feel sorry for you. I would dread living like this in a place I hate as much as you do.

I disagree with not letting our voice be heard on the pet areas for dining. Some the customers will no longer be dining along side of you.

I am not interested in spending $10.00 + to eat beside of your dog!

If this is most profitable for the owners and stockholders of Square I then
this maybe a good decision for them and move forward... but without (us)

Cross another 6 people I know will not be there....! But you will pick up an extra eater if we count the dogs in. So there is money to be made..

There are a few posters on TOTV with an attitude but most are pretty informative when they post and very nice people to meet. I agree it's too bad that some cannot comment or give an opinion and be "civil" about it.

Reasonable people will disagree at times. I think Square 1 Burgers CEO did a great job with her article. We will try them out in the comfort of their air conditioning----staying away from the smoking on the outside patio.

Our last dog, Candy, would have been fine on the patio. However, our first dog, Jip, would be too protective and I wouldn't feel comfortable taking him. But he was a "watch dog" when I had to travel on the job so someday we could enjoy the lifestyle of TV.

I look forward to trying the food and a beverage at Square 1 Burgers & Bar. :icon_hungry:

I would much rather have dinner on the patio with people's dogs than surrounded by screaming grandchildren throwing food. (And the dogs are probably much more hygenic than the typical 2/3 year old).

Don't like dogs? Go elsewhere. It is, after all, a free country. Just quit trying to pretend you are all for freedom when you insist on everyone living with your definition of "freedom".

Here is what the CEO of Square One has to say about it. (http://alturl.com/cqrp7)

Looks like the CEO may have gotten the cart before the horse at least in the Villages as yesterday there was another article where they were requesting the Wildwood city council to consider an ordinance to issue a permit to allow dogs on their patio. This even though in another thread their representative and another poster said they were already in compliance with all laws as it had been checked out thoroughly before they opened. Apparently they have been allowing this without the required permit since no permit exists in Wildwood now and without the required permit it is not allowed.

Square 1 Burgers seeks approval for ‘doggie dining’ at its restaurant

Square 1 Burgers & Bar in Pinellas Plaza.
Square 1 Burgers & Bar in Pinellas Plaza.
Square 1 Burgers & Bar wants to offer “doggie dining” on the patio of the new restaurant in Pinellas Plaza in The Villages.
To do so, the restaurant must first persuade the Wildwood City Commission to approve an ordinance permitting dogs to dine alongside restaurant patrons.
It would be a first in the city of Wildwood.
“I don’t understand it, but I know it’s getting popular,” said Wildwood Mayor Ed Wolf.
The idea of an ordinance was presented to commissioners Monday night by Jason McHugh, Wildwood’s development services coordinator.
He said it is his understanding that other Square 1 Burgers locations offer doggie dining, including a special menu for canines.
The commissioners were open to the idea of an ordinance and will consider the measure at a future meeting.

This even though in another thread their representative and another poster said they were already in compliance with all laws as it had been checked out thoroughly before they opened. Apparently they have been allowing this without the required permit since no permit exists in Wildwood now and without the required permit it is not allowed.

No, they have only allowed dogs on the patio. They have not allowed them to eat there.

Maybe go back and read all the threads regarding this topic. This is not a HAVE TO, it is a want to and allowed to. It's so nice that a local restaurant is doing this for the folks who enjoy the company of their pets. There are many, many other restaurants that do not have the ability (legally) to offer this. It is only allowed on their patio. You and others who don't want to be around an animal can always go inside...or better yet sit outside and enjoy watching all the fantastic dogs that live here. There are so many wonderful breeds and so much fun to watch.

Actually, the problem of screaming, bratty kids in restaurants is a good illustration of why dogs dining in restaurants in TV isn't a good idea.

Screaming, bratty kids continue to wreck others' dining experience because their parents LET them. Today's parents often just sit there with a feeble grin like they are powerless to stop such rudeness and disruptive behavior. They act useless and powerless, and the brat is clearly in charge. By screaming as if being axe murdered, the brat has the parents right where he wants them, and he can do as he pleases. We saw such an ugly incident at the square about a week ago and the kid was clearly in charge of the situation, with the mother pleading for the embarrassment to end, but it got worse.

Likewise, unruly dogs bother other people because their owners LET them. Like the bratty kids' parents, they refuse to discipline the dog and allow it to do whatever it wants, wherever it wants to do it.

The many dog poop threads here show how many dog owners say they "can't help it" if their dog goes onto somebody's yard to toilet there....as if they have no control over the dog on a leash.

Dog "parents" who refuse to discipline the dog as the bratty kids' parents refuse to are the reason I think there will be problems with various dogs who don't know each other in a restaurant with food being served.

Just as restaurant managers do not want to have to say "no" to people who refuse to discipline their kids, they're not going to want to say "no" to unruly dog owners, either.

Does anyone really think a restaurant manager is paid enough to take a stand in front of other customers and evict a dog owner whose dog is acting vicious and baring its teeth at another dog, patron, or the manager himself??? I don't think so.

It will depend on the permit granted or not. Time will tell.

I have yet to see an unruly dog in a restaurant setting. I have, however, endured many unruly children in restaurants.

And no restaurant manager has ever evicted an unruly kid whose parents are not in control.

Of course a manager would tell the owner of an unruly dog to leave, especially the way you describe this behavior......

tell the parents of an unruly child to leave?...never.

I've never ever seen an unruly dog at a restaurant. I've seen plenty of unruly kids. I don't believe the owner of a dog that has the potential to misbehave would ever bring the dog to a restaurant.....but they would bring an unruly kid.

It sounds like the world is full of unruly dogs, just waiting to wreak havoc on an outdoor patio. Please give dog owners some respect. I've never seen an unruly dog on a restaurant patio, never, and I've eaten on a lot of dog-friendly patios. Owners know the personalities of their dogs. Most of the time, the dogs are so quiet and docile that you don't even know they're there.

ONE post from someone who said they purchased something for their dog (nowhere did the poster say the dog ate it there on the patio - that would be against the rules of the restaurant at this time) does not make it a FACT. The Villages location clearly states NO DOGGIE DINING at this restaurant.

I don't assume everything posted on a message board is accurate. If I did, I would have believed the 7 month old email someone posted last month to make it look like a government official had opined on Square 1, when in fact they weren't even in business when that email was written.

And on April 15, you wrote: Never stops, I'm done, do whatever, unless they are following all these requirements which they are not they are breaking Florida State law...EVEN IF THEY HAVE A PERMIT

So apparently you don't know IF THEY HAVE A PERMIT.

Thank you, jayhawk. I think there is one other restaurant in TV that has the proper permits to allow dogs on their patio. I think it's Red Sauce. Or Cody's. Hopefully there will be more.

There are many restaurants in the Keys that have allowed this for years. Shoot, we were told by staff to bring our first golden inside one time at The Fish House in Key Largo, because it was too hot outside. They put us in a little out-of-the-way alcove booth. I'm sure it wasn't legal, but that's the Keys for ya.They are their own little kingdom. Key West is full of dog-patio-friendly restaurants, and in the six winters we spent there, we never heard a complaint in the newspaper or on a forum. It was just accepted practice.

Allowing pets on patios is a legal possibility in FL. A restaurant just has to apply for the permits. People will either get used to it or go elsewhere, but I don't think it will cause any of them to go out of business. The hotel industry has been forward thinking on this issue. It used to be impossible to find a hotel that accepts pets. People insisted on traveling with their pets. Lowes Hotels started out accepting pets, delivering a mat and bowls, a menu, and a goodie bag to your room. It was called Lowes Loves Pets. Hilton soon followed. The less expensive hotels started falling in line. Money talks. We will go where they are accepted, as will millions of others.

Frankly, we leave our 90-lb dog at home, for his own comfort, not anybody else's. He gets too hot outside in close quarters. But he would be among the best behaved dogs there. And he would love the chicken and steamed broccoli. Someday we might have a smaller dog, and then look out!

Just can't seem to want to follow the laws. It was totally accurate since Wildwood has not decided to issue permits even to this date. Get a permit, abide by the requirements of the permit then no one should have a problem, don't see why that is so complicated.

Really need to check your facts better, they were in business well before April 18th and even before a dog is allowed on the patio a permit is required which could not have happened since Wildwood has not decided to issue permits even at this time. No reason not to believe the poster that stated she/he took their dog there the night before since she/he is a fan of the doggie menu.

Maybe now you can verify they (still) don't have a permit as Wildwood hasn't even met to decide whether to issue them or not...and the permit has to come from Wildwood.

Still say all is OK, maybe another oversight.

Square 1 Burgers seeks approval for ‘doggie dining’ at its restaurant
May 12, 2014 By Meta Minton 81 Comments

It doesn't have to come from ANYONE since they are located in Wildwood, Sumter County. This was verified in the last thread on this same topic:

To refresh your memory -

The state of Florida leaves it to each local government to decide whether they will require any kind of permit. Neither the City of Wildwood or Sumter County require one.

There is a requirement to post the health, safety, and general welfare rules so patrons can read them (I made a large 11"x17" sign that should be on display on the patio), but that is the only requirement.

I'm including a link to the Sumter County Code of Ordinances that directly addresses the issue of dogs in public food establishments. There is a lot of information in there, but what we discovered in all of my conversations with the city and the county is that at the very end of the ordinance (section d) the requirements for a permit expired in July of 2009.

So, they can't very well violate a law that does not exist.

Look, we are beating a dead horse. S1 is legally operating a business. If you don't approve of it, don't go there. I don't like Greek food so I generally don't go to Greek restaurants. But if I did go, I sure wouldn't gripe about their food.

IT IS ALL ABOUT CHOICES. Isn't that a great thing?

Since you insist here is some more recent information from Mr. Holly that shows Mr. Dyer was totally mistaken in his statements and possibly explains why they are now trying to get the permit from Wildwood that has been required all along..

"There seems to be a bit of confusion on the part of the parties involved. The first clarification that needs to be made is that the subject business is located within the corporate limits of the City of Wildwood, and is therefore not subject to the Sumter County Land Development Code. The second is that Section 509.233 of the Florida Statues simply provides for a local exemption from the Federal Food and Drug Administration Food Code, which has been adopted in its entirety by the State of Florida. The FDA food code prohibits non-service animals in the dining areas of food service establishments which are subject to the Code. F.S. 509.233 is still completely in effect, but had it been allowed to expire, it would NOT have authorized restaurants to allow dogs in food services areas without permits; it would have prohibited local governments from exempting restaurants from the requirements of the Food Code. I do not know if the City of Wildwood has adopted "code provisions" which would establish a process for the implementation of the local exemption, but if they have not, the presence of dogs in any of Square 1’s dining areas would be prohibited by Florida Statute".

I am not a burger eater or really a meat eater for that matter so a restaurant that claims to be a "burger" restaurant would be one I would never go to. However, one that I can take my dog to encourages me to find something, ANYTHING, on the menu just to help them stay open. One dog lover in and a counter balance for those who dislike dogs and want to make a point by staying away when it's just a statement for them as well since they don't actually have to sit on the patio if they don't choose to. We plan our outings many times according to where our dogs can be included and appreciate it when it can include a restaurant.

Seems there are several of these places in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Restaurants featuring special Menus for Dogs - Los Angeles LA | Examiner.com (http://www.examiner.com/article/los-angeles-restaurants-featuring-special-menus-for-dogs)

Los Angeles has Public Health Guidelines for Outdoor Dog Dining -- http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/vet/docs/2012OutdoorDogDiningComplete.pdf

Yesterday I went to Too Jays and a lady walked in holding her little dog and then laying him or her on the seat next to her, she was in a booth. I called the manager over and he told me if he would say anything they would sue him bull she should follow the laws I really don't think anything was wrong with her . You can phony papers and say they need the dog for service. I don't have anything against dogs or cats but I don't want them where I go out dinner with my husband ....I will not go back to Too Jays anymore....I know I will get feed back from this post but to tell you the truth I don't give a dame I have my rights also...The village is getting out of hand with their pets I know they love them but think of the people who don't have a pet. Like I always say if the shoe was on the other foot how would you feel.....Even in stores where people buy clothes they put their dogs in the cart where people put their clothes in come on people wake up.....

You don't know if that little dog is trained to detect seizures or some other problem that person might have.

No judgments, just two questions -

1. Are you a retired doctor or medical professional who can judge whether or not this person qualifies for some type of service dog?

2. Would you also never return if, instead of a small lap dog, it was a full size Labrador service dog?

After considering these questions, maybe you will fell different. If not, certainly your right.

Have a great Villages day !!!

There was a post earlier where someone said they had about the same encounter at TooJays and the manager asked the person with the dog to leave - and they did. Doesn't sound as if there is a sound policy on the matter.

Anyhow, the manager can ask if it is a service animal and what it does for the person. The manager cannot ask the person what kind of disability they have.

When the manager told you he could be sued if he asked, did YOU get up and leave AND tell the manager he lost you as a customer?

Yesterday at Publix I saw a couple enter the store with their darling little pooch in the baby seat of the cart. Manager stopped them at the door and advised dogs were not allowed. They commented they had just seen someone the other day in the store with a dog so they thought it was okay. Manager explained some get by us. It was handled well by all parties. I would probably draw the line at bringing a dog to a grocery story, but I'm pretty open to most other situations.

Probably a different manager on duty at the time. Apparently service dogs don't have to have an identification tag on them. I think they should for the comfort of everybody concerned.

As you know, the service dog vest and papers can be bought on the internet for not much money along with "rules" that tell the non-legit users what to say to intimidate restaurant owners.

In my opinion, the only dogs that should be allowed in a restaurant are Seeing Eye Dogs for the blind people.

Report: Pit bull bites waitress at Oviedo Outback

By David Breen, Orlando Sentinel

11:10 a.m. EDT, May 18, 2014

A pit bull bit a waitress Saturday evening at an Outback Steakhouse in Oviedo, WKMG-Channel 6 is reporting.

The waitress was putting a water bowl down for the dog in the restaurant's outdoor dining area when she was bitten. She suffered a flesh wound.

Seminole County Animal Control is expected to quarantine the dog today, WKMG said.
