I made a different one of these Knorr Pasta Sides last night and was kind of confused by the directions which Step 2 reads from the Knorr Pasta Sides "Butter and Herb" package:

Stir in contents of package and return to boil. Reduce heat and continue boiling gently for 7 minutes or until pasta is tender, stirring occasionally.

Now, does not boil mean at the most intense heat. But, how do you "continue boiling gently" after you have reduced heat???

I just played around with noodles (using my noodle) to cook the pasta last night which did turn out but I just experimented until they looked like they did on the package.

When something is supposed to be at a full boil, it's called a rolling boil. Soft boil is just small bubbles breaking on top. Can't imagine what difference it would make except for something boiling over.

I think a soft boil is indicated so as not to break up the noodles while they're cooking.

There is simmer, where the surface just very, very gently bubbles, boil (or soft boil), which is what they meant probably, and rolling boil, which is a furious boil. You did the right thing. Good use of your noodle!
