View Full Version : Drunk and Disorderly at Old Mill Playhouse

My wife and 5 relatives were trying to enjoy a movie last night but were bothered by two males in their 20's being loud, disruptive and drunk. My wife approached the asst. mgr. with their behavior and all the mgr could do was tell them to turn off their cell phone. This was after the mgr. agreed that they would be a problem when they entered the theater. They had containers of booze and were dropping their cans on the floor and allowing them to roll down the floor. Some other patrons mentioned they could smell the booze on them as they moved by them to change seats.
These two entered the movie after it started and left before it was over, as though they were there only to disrupt others. They were also using foul language but after my wife told the mgr. about the language she said, "Well, it is an R rated movie." But these two were talking loudly and using obnoxious profanity.
The movie was "Sex Tape." After the second time out to talk to the Mgr., my wife asked for a refund or a ticket for another movie. The mgr. at first was reluctant to offer anything and said if she gave the refund, my wife would have to leave the theater right then and asked for her ticket stub. My wife had thrown her stub away but she asked why she would have to leave and miss the movie while the punks are able to stay. Finally, the mgr. capitulated and offered a ticket for another movie but our 5 relatives got nothing.
Considering all the violence that has occurred in theaters you would hope the mgmt would be more considerate of the patrons and less so to scofflaws.

A call to 911 would have solved the problem.

I agree with you, e06.
The episode you describe reflects the moral decay of society in several ways.
--the actions of the young.
--the inaction of the theater manager, who feared retaliation, perhaps violently against the theater, the manager, or the patrons.
--the inability of the justice system to prevent retaliation and repeat action, thus they were not called. That is, if the youths persisted beyond the reproach of the theater manager, police could be summoned, but they are powerless, as are the courts; punishments are lenient, and there is no protection for the victims in today's society.
Sadly, the result is fewer people enjoying the public company of others, furthering the cycle of disrespect for other human beings.
I fear for our grandchildren, and their children.

If the two younger people were very loud, drunk, and very disruptive, you should gave gone to the lobby and told the manager if they were not ejected that you would call 911 - and followed through on the action.
Asking for a refund AND wanting to stay is ridiculous. Either they were SO annoying that you had to leave or you stayed. You stayed and should not get anything.

It all falls back on what is permitted now and what is perceived to and will be permitted in the future... as of the ending of this issue, these idiots
will due it again and again as long as we the public permit it to go on without action! They should be removed after a warning from management then 911 should be called and it becomes "disorderly conduct" if occurring in the presence of the Officer..
The Manager must be called to the Front Office and explain their inaction on the complaint.. and consider being replaced..
Management should have a sit down talk with the Sheriff's Dept. how future incidents will be handled.
Business will suffer if something like this is not brought under control immediately.. just look at the coverage this incident received!
Management take notice PLEASE! THESE DISORDERLY PERSONS WILL NOT KEEP THE THEATRE IN BUSINESS... I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE AS I WAS A THEATRE MANAGER.
The next step up the ladder will be taken by us the public...and customer.
This is your warning... Do not just tell us this is an "R" rated movie..
we are quite a bit older than you most likely and know lip service... save
your job and time..

We can blame a lot of people for this behavior, but good behavior starts at home. It's not the teacher, police officer, pastor, or even the theater manager's responsibility. But these people must step up and take on the parents' job, risking their own safety I might add.
I'm sure none of our parents would have tolerated this type of behavior. If we got in trouble at school, we were in trouble at home. It does not take a village, it takes parents doing their jobs.

My wife And I have lived here at The Villages, for almost five years now and it is a really nice place to live. However, I too have three times experience problems with youth too. First, let me say that for some reason the Young here in florida are being taught to detest the elders and most of my neighbors agree. Second, The Villages, which are truly awesome were built in a Third World State. A state which is rated last in the United States in Health Care and Dental Care. Florida is actuarially rated worst than 90 % than SA Third World Countries, look it up. Its no secret. Just the facts. It is a FAILED STATE. If anyone is interest in great and non expensive dental or medical care, please search for MEDICAL TOURISM outside of the US. Just get REFERRALS. There are good and bad everywhere in this world.

Calling the police on the youths in the theater would have gotten the youths kicked out of the theater with a stern "talking to" and the reporting movie patron a set of four slashed tires on their car.

Im tired of bad behavior and rude people getting away with things because people are afraid to act.
Why should anyone follow rules, laws and just have decent behavior if there are no consequences ?
I don't know what the solution is,I just hope that I brought up my children to have better manners

1) Isn't 911 supposed to be used only for emergencies?
2) My experience with the youth in this state is the opposite. Unlike their northern counterparts, we have been impressed with the manners and respect shown by the vast majority of the youth we have encountered here.

Mine too. I have found the kids in the Villages very well behaved for the most part.
And, I have been going to Villages' area movie theaters since around July 2005 and have seldom been bothered by any of the other spectators. There was an e-cigarette smoker that kind of annoyed me about 5 months back at the Old Mill Playhouse. He might have been a smoker was my thought while in the theater but I was not breathing in anything so I did not report it to the management. I was very curious though about what I had actually seen.
There are noisy eaters every once in a while but movie theaters have popcorn and candy eaters.
Once in a while a woman may be wearing way too much perfume or a man way too much cologne.
And, there are those red hat ladies if you get a flock in front of you with their hats blocking some of the screen. I just move when that happens.

My husband and I were at that show 5:10 and saw and heard it all. They were 2 rows behind us and when they walked passed us it smelled like a brewery. I thought one of them was going to fall down the stairs he was so unsteady. They came in that way and I could not believe that they let them in when they ripped their ticket they had to see the way they were and had to smell them. A month ago 2 other young guys came in and as they were going to their seat they were yelling and making a scene I was frightened and did tell the usher he thanked me but nothing was done. One guy actually fell asleep the rest of the movie. Both times it has been the old mill theatre. I thank your wife for complaining because when he came back in I was going to go out and complain if there was anymore nonsense but he must have gotten his friend and they both left and never came back. I am going to stop down there this week and ask to see the manager and make sure she is aware this has happened twice. I am also going to ask her why ushers arent coming in the movie a couple of times and actually walking up the stairs and checking the theatre out. They always do that in ny.

Courtesy ,respect, responsibility, all were sadly lacking in the 2 young people you wrote about. Actually..... even the movie show manager did not show theses traits either! I assume there are rules for theater patrons listed somewhere. ( besides turning off your cell and no texting)
If there are such patron rules they should be posted on theater property and referred to in a complaint to the manager. If I recall, most times this post states the manager has the right to refuse or remove individuals.

It says something on the back of the ticket stub as with this one for George Clooney's The American. I put one showing the front of Dinner for Schmucks. These are both for the Old Mill Playhouse.

A loud rude drunk at any age is obnoxious and annoying. My son and his girlfriend (in their 20's) came back from Brownwood describing an incident they had with an older guy at Las Tapas last week. Nothing to the degree described at the theater, but still an example of inappropriate behavior. The common factor being the alcohol.

There is a number to call for non emergencies. I have 352-569-1600. However, behavior such as the OP describes could have quickly escalated into an emergency. There's no telling what intoxicated people would do. The manager should have issued a verbal warning. The second time these drunks should have been thrown out. If the manager was uncomfortable doing so, the he should have called the police for assistance. If I were the OP, I would either have called the police myself after the manager failed to or I would have asked for a refund and gone outside to search for a policeman myself. I believe the police have a station right there near the theater. This kind of behavior should not be tolerated. And to think one of these two drunks were probably operating a vehicle!

I agree with you about calling 911. I had relatives in Pittsburgh who were police officers, and they were dispatched to drunk and disorderlies all the time. It was not considered inappropriate to call 911 for that.
And it very well could have escalated.

It is particularly disturbing to me that the manager did nothing after being made aware of this problem. If one or more male patrons had confronted these obnoxious morons this could have gotten violent quickly. This manager should be replaced before someone gets hurt. I will join the others in registering my concern for this inaction.

The manager is not trained properly on how to handle this type of situation. It's his/her job to make sure a "proper" and safe environment is provided for patrons in his/her theatre.
So far they have been lucky---maybe not next time!

We would not want to see a repeat of the shooting like in Wesley Chapel - and from previous threads there are large numbers of Villagers who carry their pistol whenever they go out in public.

I doubt if these Villages' theaters get a lot of problem patrons. Maybe, someone snoring too loudly, but not much else. I have probably been to these theaters now about 450 times and the audiences have been usually no problem at all. That's since we moved here in July of 2005. The Rialto was the only movie theater open yet, I believe but am not sure.
I never go to evening showings however so there may be more problem audience members then.

How does a young person get in without a Village ID?????
The Town Squares are open to the public, as are the shops, restaurants, and movie theaters.
Roads are public and not owned or maintained by The Villages.
For those who thought we were buying in a Bubble, it's not true.
But for the most part, we are lucky to enjoy a very safe environment.

The Police in the modern era, do not have the latitude or discretion, available to them as when we were kids. In a bar, theatre, or other private locations. They cannot be bouncers to throw some jerk(s) out of the place, or they may face a civil suit. There must be charges filed. Disorderly conduct, harassment, ect. There must be a complainant in or on a private premise. If they do not plead out at arraignment, the complainant must be available for possible testimony. The theatre manager should be the complainant in this case, as he is responsible for the premise. When I was a kid, if the Police Officer said move, you moved.

One of our residents just got six months for being drunk and disorderly AND a few more details. If the manager was not a coward AND if you had called 911 I can guarantee these two creeps would have been taken out in handcuffs. DRUNK in public tossing cans on the floor is a crime. Not a major crime but a crime. So is littering and Jwalking.
The right cop and a dozen angry residents speaking up would have put these knuckledragging fools in the back seat of a patrol car. Fact.

We watch Judge Judy and "my America" daily. Common-sense judge who sniffs out scams against taxpayers every day. Great entertainment! As for the theater buffoons: Go to the manager, dial 911 when he/she refuses to toss out the miscreants on their ears. The 20somethings came into the theater for the very purpose of disrupting senior citizens, and succeeded because no one had the gumption to prevent it. 911 is meant for such purposes.

I would have demanded a refund and left with all my relatives. The theatre has to provide a safe, quiet environment. Everyone should have walked out. I refuse to put up with anyone's BS or get angry anymore. It's not worth it.
Have you been to San Francisco in the last few years? I was there 3 years ago on vacation staying in a Youth Hostel with my son and his college friends. While they were in a conference I went sightseeing. Everyday, many times a day I would be approached by panhandlers. It was hard to tell who was harmless. I feel very, very safe here but not there.

Have you ever been in a public place and been bothered by a stranger? In some places like San Francisco that happens all the time. It's dangerous. It rarely happens here. It's not even worth getting angry. You can easily walk away.
My son and I were on a cross country trip. We enjoy each other’s company and could not afford the places you can afford. We have gone on many father/son trips. He picked out the Youth Hostel. It was his treat. He felt good showing me off to his friends. The Youth Hostel itself wasn't dangerous. It was right next to the Tenderloin District and we didn't know any better. He spent the first 4 years of his PHD program at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and the last 2 at Stanford. I lent him my new Forrester and used his beat up Corolla until he graduated. That was the impetus of the trip. I flew home.
And why do I owe you an explanation?

I was in Frisco last October and saw panhandlers by Pier 39 area. None were agressive but they can be in places. I still would have stayed at the Hyatt.
I did not ask for an explanation. I merely stated I did not see any connection with the OP and still do not.

I'm surprised you let Baltimore off easy, they have a ton of homeless people and about 300 homicides a year. I guess it all depends on what area of town you're in, maybe that could be the said for San Fran.

The Villages is so much safer than Baltimore too. I let them off easy.
Is that your point?

Why is it PIC to call it Frisco and yet people still say Philly? Even the police use @PhillyForce.

Perhaps the ushers should be bouncers.

I stopped going to the movie theater years ago for this very reason. Some people talk through the entire movie. I'll watch movies in the private and quiet living room of my home.

Sooner or later they're going to get into a motor vehicle @ that time the they're fair game for a DUI--follow them and get their tag #

Think you answered your own question. San Franciscans don't call The City Frisco. Never have, doubt they ever will. Philadelphians call Philly Philly. Kind of like calling someone who prefers Katherine Kathy. Tis rude.

It's easier to spell....and better than other nicknames I have heard over the years...

You cannot eat the steak and then complain it was inedible. (Judge Judy 101)
She is funnier than Seinfeld.
Going to the lobby and giving the manager a choice of ejecting the louts, or even calling the cops himself/herself, might have been the best way to go. In this day and age, people never know when objecting to misbehaving people will result in a bullet or knife to the chest. Damn shame.

I think calling the police would have been the way to go. I'm surprised that in a theater full of people that no one called. The police are trained how to deal with drunken and disorderly behavior. It would be interesting to call the local police department and find out what their response would have been even after the fact.
The theater manager's response is even more incredible. What if one of the drunkards started throwing beer cans and someone was injured? Not many in the audience would hesitate to make that first call to lawyer!
