Thanks to TOTV we are the proud parents of Olivia, a rescue terrior. We have had her one week and she is a delight. I know that Pet Smart does obedience training but I saw owners and dogs at Odell once. What suggestions do you have for training? We would like to do it in a social environment. Olivia is sweet and affectionate and cuddly with people but not so much with other dogs. Welcome your suggestions.

I remember seeing the training class listed in the Lifelong Learning Catalog, I believe. There was a class without the dogs present, and then one with the dogs, held outside.

Go to page 26 of the catalog, which can be found online here http://www.thevillageslifelongcollege.com/pdfs/2014/2014_July-Dec_082214.pdf

Or stop up to their office in the High School at Belvedere & 466.

The woman who teaches the group lesson through the LLLC, I believe will also give private lessons. The group lesson didn't work out real well for us and our Odie. He is a yappy Chihuahua that doesn't really like other dogs. He didn't do well under the pavilion with 20 other dogs. If you call the LLLC, they will give you her #.

We really liked Nicole and or Walter at Petco on 441. Our dog just finished adult obedience in a six week class. One on one with the instructor.

You adopted Sweet Olivia! If she needs obedience training, classes are a very good idea.
I think I remember that she isn't a puppy, perhaps a year or two old?
How did she get along with her foster mom's dogs?
If she just lacks socialization with other dogs, depending on how comfortable she is around other dogs, I'd suggest socializing her in the small dog area at DDRR.
I would take her there if she lacks confidence, but NOT if she is aggressive!
At first she may be shy, but it's quite amazing how quickly they start enjoying the interaction with other dogs.

The small dog area is for dogs under 30 lbs. If you take her when it's hot, dogs tend to be lethargic when it's hot, and it shouldn't be very busy.
Be sure to take her leash off! Dogs feel confined when they're leashed and tend to be more aggressive.

You got the cutest dog ever, and she ended up with a great mom.
Congratulations, and best of luck with the training.

JoJo,

Olivia is adorable! I hope you enjoy the many years of love and loyalty a pet can bring.

My sweet Carin Terrier Ginger, is almost 14 years old. She is diabetic and blind but, still wags her tail and greats me when I walk in the door. :):)

All, thanks again for the recommendations for Olivia's training. We are going with Nicole at Petco for the first round of training. Then we may check out the Learning College. She hasn't had any accidents in the house and knows sit and stay. We just have to watch that she doesn't bolt for an open door. Fortunately we have lots of tags and she is microchipped. We are all smitten with her - she is mostly cuddly in your lap but is also playful. We think she's a year old. The dog world has changed since we had pets when we were raising our boys!
