This morning at 10 am, the confederate (not capitalized) battle flag came down from display on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds. The people spoke. A courageous governor listened, and the flag is now in a museum where it belongs.
Too bad that Marion County is backward. It makes Florida a laughing stock.

BS!
If it were put to a vote, I would not bet it would wind up thsame way.
Anytime.....ANYTIME.....politicians move this fast to implement ANYTHING....it is a sure sign of self preservation and re-election concerns.
Has nothing what so ever to do with what the people said.
Sounds good though....for a nano second anyway.

The confederate flag went up in 1961 because 9 young black men tried to get served at a lunch counter. It's ironic that it came down today partly because 9 black people were murdered while attending bible study by a confederate flag fan, for no other reason than the color of their skin.
This is a start and God bless South Carolina for taking this action, but now confederate flags must be taken off of federal land everywhere in the country.

Were any of you kids the ones who said it was wrong to blanket everyone together, or is calling bigot and racist just something that is inborn in you ?

It is amazing. While post #2 was a bit abrasive, the kids on this forum light on threads like this and ignore any issue driven discussions like the plague.
It must be easy to just wait and yell racist and bigot. Makes it easy and saves thinking.
Wonder what the difference might be between this non thinking crowd and the white power groups are. Both just spout hate....none of them think.

I just read that a Wal-Mart in Arkansas did not complete the sale of a high school ring because the mascot was waving a confederate flag. They returned the money to the customer and said the ring will be melted down for other jewelry.
The ring was ordered before Wal-Mart decided not to sell items with confederate flag but was caught before delivery.

We all know it is difficult to come up with any different words than the very few you know.
And that your inspiriation just blossoms as you look in the mirror.
I see you follow in the footsteps of your president by selective application of the constitution as you see fit.

This thread has been misnamed. It should not be "The People Spoke"but rather "The Blacks Spoke"and the politicians caved in fearing another Ferguson size riot and the loss of votes. Taking down the Confederate Flag is not going to make one iota of a difference in this country as respects the race issue.
South Carolina's politicians would have been wiser to initiated a referendum and let the people of South Carolina decide. The Flag was simply a symbol of the past and now politicians have given this symbol new life.
I for one salute Marion County for taking a stand on individual freedoms. Those celebrating this as a victory are ignorant of the potential consequences.

The South Carolina legislature is controlled by the GOP and is every black person voted Democrat that would not change one bit. So quit your race baiting that the only reason the flag came down is fear of loosing elections because of black voters. The flag came down because enough people now realize that the racists own that flag no matter what it meant 150 years ago, it now for way too many people is a code for their KKK sympathies. And with Mr Roof, it is finally obvious to enough people that any argument about Southern Pride is over. That flag was carried into war AGAINST the United States by people who were spurred to action to defend the peculiar institution of slavery. Think it was about "states rights"? You could not be more wrong about the constitution of the CSA to allow states to self determine the right to own slaves.

So slaves were owned by the wealthy plantation owners and the middle class and poor went to battle and killed by the thousands to protect the rich folks being able to own slaves?
Doesn't seem to make sense!
Some people do have deeper knowledge and personal roots than what is presented by the television set, media moguls, politicians and special interests.
Like the example or not, but as Farakahn said the week after the killings in NC and the confederate flag, the flag of the USA can just as easily be made to show that it stands for repression of more than just blacks or latinos or muslims......if a group thought they could make the case.
Before pouncing.........key words COULD.....MAKE THE CASE....THOUGHT.
What is not presented by anybody is the origin of the confederate flag. Why the colors? Why the "bars and stars". The real roots of the flag not the reimaged convenience of today.
MAybe this will help some either for or against:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America
And for those who are so quick to make assumptions what this poster is saying....don't bother because you will only get it wrong again.
It is so very simple. Just asking what do folks really know about the subject....NOTHING MORE!

Good post.
As is/has been discussed, this is all about controlling the narrative. Substance does not mean a thing.
An honest narrative on race would be great, but without hearing all sides, it is not going to happen. An example.....during race riots in Ferguson, Baltimore, etc. IMMEDIATELY the conversation was seized to condemn whit police. If you dared mention that the blacks committed crime, you were dismissed as a racist. Now after some time, we are seeing the folly of those riots and how they were based on lies.
There needs to be discourse for sure, but it cannot be done when the conversation is steered and controlled. This thread began by the OP calling Marion County a blemish in the state. Does she have any idea of history of that flag...does she present even ONE reason to condemn the county ? NOPE

How do you talk with people so narrowly pigeon holing everyone to suit whatever their reason might be ?

Did you not read your history books in High School (If you got that far)? The Flag was not "simply a symbol of the past", It was in fact the Flag of an enemy who attacked the United States and by the way, was defeated. This is far more than a symbol of the past, not unlike the Swastika and the Rising Son. Suppose you might also consider them simply a "symbol of the past".

The South was not the first to attack, the North attacked the South first at the Battle of Phillipe. Regardless of what you say, they were ALL Americans regardless of what side they fought on. Many were captured and forced to fight by both the North and the South, they had NO choice. Most of the soldiers doing the fighting never owned a slave in their lives. Some of the officers did though. Lincoln treated all of the South worse than the US has ever treated any POW since. Go to Vicksburg, MS and visit the battleground for a better education on the War Between The States than you will ever find on these racially biased threads.

This uneducated guest might educate you of the ancient gammadion which in early Eastern cultures meant god, good luck, eternity and other benign conjurations. We know it today as the swastika.
Flags are symbols and symbols do matter and because they have no intrinsic value they take meaning in the way they are used.
During the civil war this was the battle flag designed to be carried at the head of a regiment where the flag's blue St Andrew cross on a field of red might stand out through the smoke of battle and it is this meaning for many southerns in memory of their ancestors
First I reject your moral equivalence of the swastika and the rising sun to that of the Confederate Flag. Secondly I reject your simple explanation of the reason the civil war was fought because it was fought for more than just freeing salves, the cotton trade for one. Third I reject your belief that southern alone were responsible for slavery. Fourth I remind you that racism found itself in every state in this union then and now. Fifth that you cannot judge people from the past by today's thinking . Sixth and very important soldiers from both the north and the south were all Americans which made this war that much more insidious. Northern soldiers did as many evil deeds during this war as did southerns. but then that is the nature of war. Seventh the same people who demanded this flag be removed also denigrate the American flag proclaiming America's evil colonial past
I keep repeating that the Confederate Flag is just a symbol the danger is that the tail is wagging the dog and the attention given to it a red herring to distract from what is really happening. What will be next burning of history books so that fascist progressive can continue their re-write of American history. How many ways can you say the same thing so that people begin to understand that the very people who are reshaping America are neither your friend or mine WAKE UP!...or you will find yourself being addressed as comrade.

Despite your abounding wisdom you neglected to mention that of the many Swastikas that your research turned up the Nazi flag was right-facing on both sides and at a 45° rotation which differentiated it from other historical symbols called Swastikas. This is of course is the one I referred to in my earlier post. By the way, in your infinite wisdom you neglected to characterize the Rising Son as anything but a symbol of the Japanese Empire we also defeated in WWII. The only wisdom you have displayed is your ability to Google.

The South was not the first to attack, the North attacked the South first at the Battle of Phillipe.
Actually, the Skirmish of Philipe was the first LAND skirmish of the Civil War. The bombardment of Fort Sumter by the South against the Union began on April 12. Philipe was a few weeks later.

If the confederate flag is not a symbol of racism, how come so few blacks choose to display it at their homes and businesses and churches? Are they not proud of the heritage it represents?

And how pray tell does you or anybody else know how many blacks display the confederate flag?
Fly by night claims like this have no basis and add no more poetic license to one's presentation.
So for the sake of your lark, we will assume none. What does it have to do with anything other than interjecting a nonsensical race parameter.

Read this by the man that was instrumental in the design and creation of the "Stars & Bars" and then tell me that it is not a symbol of racism, bigotry and hatred.
"As a people, we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; this flag would thus be emblematical of our cause.… Such a flag…would soon take rank among the proudest ensigns of the nations, and be hailed by the civilized world as THE WHITE MAN'S FLAG.… As a national emblem, it is significant of our higher cause, the cause of a superior race, and a higher civilization contending against ignorance, infidelity, and barbarism. Another merit in the new flag is, that it bears no resemblance to the now infamous banner of the Yankee vandals."

You forgot to mention these quotes in your wikipedia article-
"After the war ended, Thompson, a supporter of the Democrats, opposed the Republican Party in the southern U.S. states, as well as the granting of civil rights to African Americans."
And-
"After the Civil War , Thompson, was a fervent supporter of the Democrats and opposed the Republican Party's efforts in southern U.S. states."

In his mind it does sound like that is so, but again you have to consider the fact that not everyone believes the same thing. Also, there were at least 3 or 4 different versions of the confederate flag each created with different meaning and intent. To me, intent is the key word in all of this.
To some people, the American flag may stand for capitalism which they believe to be evil, while most view the American flag as representing freedom and liberty. For those few, should we then remove the American flag as well?
Allowing the door to open for minority rule is, at least in my opinion, a dangerous path. It would have been best to put this to a vote, allowing the people to have a voice in this matter.

This is a state issue. South Carolina law allows that the legislature has the say over placement of flags. Other states, such as Alabama, removed the confederate flag by executive order of the governor.

I didn't google one bit of it. Secondly you skipped over the fact that I was pointing to the origins of the swastika . Thirdly that my point of the swastika and Rising Sun vis a vis confederate Flag was that the Confederate Flag was carried in a war against the states American v American wherein the aformentioned flags were carried in battles between foreign enemies and Americans and hence any comparison is a strawman.
People have their own personal view of God and most people respect those difference. The same applies to flags but like the God issue radical progressive seem to want to destroy anything that annoys them
