View Full Version : "The Walker " Closing

The previous thread was closed, I believe due to the hostile interaction of the posters.
I plan to live a long time in the Villages and I feel the need to clarify a few things that I blame myself for not making clear in my post.
I do not walk in the early morning darkness because I am trying to be sneaky. I have skin cancer and walking 3+ hours each day in the sun is something I can not do.
I make a note of which post light bulbs are out when it is dark out, but I replace them in the daylight.
Replacing light bulbs, which I only do in my community, is only a small part of what I do. Unfortunately, due to the original thread, that is all that was discussed.
Most people in my community know me and therefore there are not concerns addressed by some of the posters. Obviously, one person didn't know me.
When I leave my community, I walk along golf cart paths and main roads and I pick up liter. I do this as a community service.
I hope I have done a better job of telling people who I am.

I would be honored to be your neighbor. BTW, do you do Windows?

I am going there.
Do you pick up dog poop you see near the edge of the grass??
I will pick up dog poop from another dog occasionally if I have enough bags to handle Beau's as well.
My neighborhood of Lynnhaven has a few people who are not all that friendly but by-in-large there are mostly very good neighbors here.
I hope you keep up the good work but are a little cautious about the occasional Grumpy Gus and Negative Nancy.

You have the best of intentions and I feel folks should thank you for what you do instead of sarcastically suggesting that you may get shot.

You really don't owe any explanation. Only you know your true intentions so let no one judge you. You sound like a very kind person.

Wish you were around when my lamp post lights needed changing. I was nervous to do it by myself and wasn't sure if I should take the whole cover off or just reach up under it. I managed to do it, but didn't like it, too many bug carcasses up inside there.

Those are some substantial detail that were left out of the initial post. I believe that would have changed the tone of the negative responses. I still believe its being very forward to repair the property of someone else without their approval. No doubt your a very good person. One of the greatest gifts of life is helping another and then keeping it between yourself and your Lord. I'm sure you've experienced the feeling given the style of your work. Stay safe!

I agree with all the good things being said about the OP.
But in the interest of safety and well-being of all Villagers, I must agree with this statement.

Doing random acts of kindness, anonymously, on a singular basis is fine.
But when it becomes daily, self-appointed patrol that chastises a person (the first thread's original poster) for parking their disabled car in the street or for other 'infractions' that are Community Watch duties, it looks like policing and daily "watching" people, an unnerving situation.
As for living out one's faith and then noting newspaper recognition of oneself, Christ's words are very clear:
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
The Lord's Prayer
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

I don't see any harm that has been done. I think we folks who are retired overthink a lot of things.

I believe the Walker's intentions are honorable. I also think there are boundary's being violated. It's very obvious that the majority of respondents on the subject feel strongly about having unauthorized maintenance being done on their property. I would not want to walk out my front door and find someone in my yard working on my lamp post.
I also wonder about the liability issue. Would if the Walker get hurt or while changing a bulb get injured because of a faulty socket in the lamp post.

What if there was a electrical short and he got grounded?

Changing a bulb in a post lamp that typically has two or three bulbs in it, on a house worth 200, 300 or 400K, is not an act of kindness or charity. I'm not sure what it is, but its not that. I find the behavior very odd. There is something else going on here.

Good grief!! Some of you really need to get a grip! There's nothing odd, or suspicious, or anything else you can conger up. As someone said, some of you are WAY overthinking this. He's a friendly neighbor who enjoys helping others. Quit trying to find something suspicious.

It is not overthinking things to not want somebody...no matter how honest and kind...to come on to your property uninvited and perform an act of maintenance. I think those that see no problem with this are underthinking it.

I'll take The Walker any day as a neighbor. Some of the harsh comments against his actions brings to mind an old saying by my grandmother; "Be kind to unkind people, they need it most". As kids, it made us see some of the neighborhood grouches in a different light.

So would I, very much so...as long as he didn't do maintenance on my house without my knowledge.

As I said before, only the walker knows his intentions so we should not judge but, yes, some may not approve of his/her actions. That's life, isn't it.

From a Law Enforcement perspective, be forewarned - DO NOT GO ONTO ANY PERSONS PROPERTY; simple as that. I've become a somewhat (but not entirely) passive person since retirement (long ago), as long as I don't catch someone in my yard. We have about 6 retired LEO's in the neighborhood and I don't think it would be pretty in any of our yards.

WiserBud said he changes bulbs for people on his street he knows are out of town or ones he knows cannot do it themself. Yes, it is an act of kindness!
As far as putting a note under the paper saying a light is out - good! That is far from trespassing!
This man is a good person and deserves thanks - not posts warning him he might get shot or "I don't think it would be pretty" (from a retired law enforcement officer).
This is The Villages! Be neighborly! Be kind - like WiserBud!
