There was another golf cart accident two people in one cart were injured and transported to the hospital. The other vehicle was a golf car. The driver of one of the carts was cited for running a stop sign and NOT HAVING PROOF OF INSURANCE

This accident is shown on the online- news paper.

There are over 50,000 golf carts here and well over 100,000 people clogging the roads and multi-modal paths. Add to that non village traffic on both and its a wonder there are not more accidents.

Not required only means one needs to make their own judgement about insuring the risks in their lives.

Life insurance is not required either but it is most assuredly a multi billion dollar thriving business.

For less than $100 why would one not elect to insure a golf cart?

Especially give the exposure and significant risks posed here in TV.

Second, why don't people install and use their seat belts in a golf cart? Many people get thrown from their carts, resulting in serious/fatal injuries!!!

It saddens me that for a hundred bucks, people would put themselves in jeopardy of a serious injury. I hear so often that some people think they are going slow enough in a golf cart and don't ever think, they will be injured and can't be bothered to wear seat belts.

I believe it can be required if one is involved in an accident on a public roadway. Unfortunately getting it after the fact won't work. So Rubicon's suggestion is right on target.

On the subject of seat belts; I see too many folks who think they are safe with their seat belt somewhere between their breasts and belly button. A sure opportunity for an injury.

As in automobile use it is recommended to have the belt across the hips.

The neighborhood roads are county roads and it doesn't appear you need insurance for golf carts to drive on the neighborhood roads.

That is probably a generalization by the authorities to cover all roads. If you have a street legal cart that is licensed and registered, then you have to have insurance. If you are driving a non-street legal cart, not licensed and not registered, then you can drive it on roads that are designated as both cart and auto roads. In TV, many county maintained roads in the area allow unregistered carts. I think the key is whether or not it is registered. At least, that is the way I understand the law.

I would never even think to carry proof of insurance in my golf cart. I have no idea why he was cited for this? I am very curious to find out...

I, like many have a separate insurance policy (not homeowners) for the cart, but as others have said I do not believe it is mandatory.

We are with you on the first two but have our own 3rd item - our cart is limited to 20 mph. If we need to go faster, we'll take a car. After the unique driving we have seen in the roundabouts, the careless/reckless/speeding by many golf carts continues to surprise us.

Regarding the report of a citation for not having proof of insurance, it is possible that a) the cart was street legal or b) the online paper was incorrect. If you have noticed, their reporting leaves a great deal to be desired.

I would think that the charge of "running a stop sign" would be hard to prove unless the policeman saw it happen. "Negligent driving" would seem more appropriate since the man's cart hit the ladies cart on the right rear wheel.

Those are just a couple of thoughts.
