I hope you are one of the 57000 members here so you can answer a question. I am the driver with whom you were competing for the same point on the space/time continuum yesterday as we exited Springdale onto Buena Vista. I have marked my path with green and yours with red.

Since you laid on your horn with gusto, I assume you believe that you were in the right and I the wrong. Also, assuming you missed the warning painted on the road indicating you could only turn right and assuming you missed the metal sign indicating the same, and assuming you did not see my left turn signal blinking, please answer my question.
Where exactly did you expect me to head from the left lane?

Good luck getting an answer to THAT! The same thing has happened to me many times, the last time it was by a "street legal" cart. Maybe I can take the opportunity to ask that driver if he is suicidal. If I hadn't anticipated his stupidity, his "street legal" cart would be in 500 pieces, and he probably would be in just as many.

Somewhere, I am not saying too much until I get the copy of the police report and hear back from Lake County. I was in Marion County and the driver does not live in Marion...I want to be certain that the notes on the police report are correct, and have a witness add their statement. Then...gloves come off (figuratively). My less than inexpensive rear wheel was damaged (and my cleat broke on my shoe)...not much blood thankfully...got to wonder why people are so angry and horn happy...
Oddly, my jersey and shorts both said "Litespeed"...as does the bike :-)

You have to be completely nuts to ride a bike in the traffic circles in the Villages. You're asking for trouble. Multi-modal paths are named that for a reason. I always ride in them.

We have to be defensive drivers here especially. Some people here are older, losing eyesight, driving for the first time as their spouse has recently passed and many do not understand the traffic circles not to mention some of the Florida rules of the road. Assume nothing and watch out for the other guys.

At least once per day, I am going 3/4 around the roundabout, and therefore I am supposed to be in the left (inside) lane until I am ready to make the LEFT turn from the INSIDE lane, and I really look around and use my SIGNALS so people are aware of what I am doing. I have been here for 3 years, and still getting used to this way of using roundabouts. As long as the cars ENTERING the roundabout actually yield to ALL of the traffic on the roundabout, this works well, when they only yield to the right lane, bad things can happen.

The Villages obviously is not the only place on earth that experiences accidents. An accident is a sudden unforeseen event created by an act of omission or commission of one or more persons. An accident by definition is not an intentional act.
The response from the aggrieved is normally in proportion to the serious consequences of the event. While accidents can be scary not all things scary are dangerous or damaging.
All of us are subjected to error and thus have been responsible for an accident(s) in our lives.
I keep this in mind to perpetuate my defensive driving and not to judge too harshly. I hope some posters do not judge my post too harshly.

Diplomacy is a beautiful thing.
It is going to get very crowded soon. There will be many people unused to driving in our area and the roads will be crowded with them. They will make many mistakes and some of them will kill people who drive in unprotected golf carts. Be careful. PLEASE be careful. I would like to count all of you reading this at the end of March when it becomes less crowded.
Drive as if every person behind the wheel is crazy, because sometimes it appears that is so here on the roads in The Villages.

Because the PROPER place for a bicycle is 2-3' to the RIGHT of the white line (even more so when going speed limit). I have more rights to the road than a car...and if a driver really wants to may some medical bills and just over $15k for a bike (plus damages)...we can have at it. :-)
Plus, if a drunk in a cart hits me - he may not have insurance. Chances are the guy in the car will....Simply. I take the lane I have the most rights in...that, more often than not is the lane of traffic. What is nuts, the only reason I was in the cart lane is that I had a backpack on that I was going to drop off at a friends house about four blocks away.
I should have the police report this afternoon. If so, will have a claim filed against the driver.

I yelped, and he told me, calm down, we have lots of circles in NJ, I know how to use them! I told him Toto, you are NOT in NJ anymore!! You do not have more rights than autos. Florida law requires you to use a bike lane if provided. You make bike riding unsafe for all of us bikers. Remember karma is a biatch. Maybe next time you won't be so lucky.

I had a typo- my rights as a cyclist it to the LEFT of the white line. As for state law -
"
As of 2011, the lane position and bike lane law include an exception for avoiding a potentially unsafe condition. This is significant in that it allows bicyclists to anticipate dynamic conditions which have the potential to make a bike lane or far right lane position unsafe."
I for one find the golf cart lane FAR more unsafe than the lane of traffic. Plus, the carts are simply too slow, do not signal and are not mandated to have abilities (such as vision) to drive.
The order is...walkers, horses, cyclists (non motorized)..and then cars.
As for cyclists in TV...I have seen a few of the clubs ride. They need not wonder why it is they are hated on the roads (three and four abreast and on and on)

Yes -I totally agree. First thing I tell my visitors: "Try not to drive in the circle beside another car. They will cut you off most of the time." When my daughter in law was driving one day a truck with a trailer full of pine straw cut us off in a circle, & she was totally surprised, & said he can't do that. Huh...he just did. And she is a really smart girl, just returned from three years in Europe where traffic circles are common.

I do this all the time and I have no problem with it. Of course I use my directionals and mirrors. Drivers like you and I really don't have a problem because we are aware of our surroundings. Sure plenty of people make mistakes when driving. It is up to us to be on the look out for them and take action to avoid collisions. Other than insurance issues, if you are in an accident, it really doesn't matter whose at fault. Your car is still damaged and you and possibly others are injured. I feel that it is my responsibility to make up for people that don't know how to drive.

Regarding using the "cart lanes" (aka diamond lanes), if you are talking about a 2 lane road such as Hillsborough, I stick to the cart lanes. There is too much traffic doing 35 mph that would have to pass in the oncoming lane and you are only going to antagonize drivers. Just sayin ...

Of course she thought she was "in the right". Like all of us, she is an old codger who thought the world revolves around her and got irritated when you were in her way.
Her honking at you shows that while she is an aggressive driver, she has enough sense to be alert when driving thru a roundabout, which is good. I am a slow driver and I get honked a lot, so I am used to it.

I saw someone exercising those super rights around 11am today. Someone wearing a red Litespeed cycling outfit blew the stop sign coming out of Savannah Center onto El Camino Real. This caused the car in the right lane to move left slightly into my lane which in turn caused me to have to brake a little. I doubt if it was you because I don't think someone who self-defines themselves as a cyclist and who owns a $15K bike would have that big a beer gut.

I think we should just accept that we all users of public roads, streets. As I user I will accept that I am not alone, and all kind of "Rights" I have to share with all others. Just common sense. If you understand that you are not alone and accept all others you'll be a good driver in my eyes.
The problem 'HOW to drive safely' I can't explain here, it comes with experience to drive and to "see" what the other driver(s) are doing, in other words, pay full attention to all things around yourself. (I drove more than 5 million miles in Europe, North-/South America, Asia and North-Africa, Rome, Paris, London and Germany included in my life so far).
And, I must admit, that I saw a lot of very good drivers in TV, but also (minority) the crazy ones.

Back to the OP subject. From the picture you provided, it appears to me the lady crossed over at the dotted lines, then the lane you were in was merged into the outside lane by the painted lines in the inside lane. Does that mean you were supposed to yield to anyone in the outside lane? She may have thought you were farther behind her than your picture indicates. You are 100% correct. I can't tell you how many times I have observed or confronted the same brand of stupidity at that very intersection. My suggestion for your future safety is that when someone approaches that rotary from Belle Meade on your right, assume that they are one of the imbeciles who hasn't a clue about how to traverse that intersection even though the signage is perfectly explicit and simply assume that they will do it wrong. Placing a Sheriff Deputy at that location would yield a significant amount of revenue for Marion County.

Because the Belle Meade exits are a single lane.
It's legal to exit out of a roundabout from either lane. So you have to merge lanes in the roundabouts so vehicles from both lanes don't try to exit into the single lane exits at the same time.

Looks like you missed where the right lane was for right turn only. Also, the dotted lines in a roundabout are to allow vehicles to exit from the inner lane, not to allow lane changes when in it. Vehicles need to be in the proper lane for their exit prior to entering.

Several years ago when I was taking an AARP safe driving class, the instructor said that the most dangerous drivers were the slow aging drivers because they cause younger drivers to be impatient and take more risks.
It would seem to me that anyone moving to TV should be required to take a drive test drive throughout TV.

Yep, probably fit right in there. Many times it's not their driving skills but their personality. Some could care less about others on the road and are very pushy even in supermarkets.

With all due respect (we ALL face occasional bad drivers), let it pass. Life is too beautiful here to vent about one lousy driver. The chances of her seeing your post, and changing her driving habits, are zero. "Don't worry, be happy".

We live in a 55 and older community and the posted speeds reflect a safer environment. Some people have a hard time adjusting to this slower pace especially at first or when coming from faster paced cities. I don't know what the statistics are for fatalities from accidents but I'll bet it's lower then the national average based on the speed limits here. I would also say who among us hasn't made a mistake or as the new saying go's, a "my bad" while driving. Thankfully most of the time we manage to avoid an accident with a close call. It's part of driving. Getting angry when someone scares you is a normal reaction, but not one we need to act on. I agree with Chipster, life can be way to short. Pat yourself on the back for having avoided a collision and let it go. As I used to tell my kids when our car would break down or need repairs, "well at least it's not a beloved horse and we don't have to shoot it".

I present a slight variation on the situation. Here two cars are side by side driving east on Evans Prairie wanting to do a 180 thru the circle. As can be seen in the red circle, both lanes are marked as allowing that choice. They enter the circle simultaneously. Which car has the right of way at the southern point in the circle where it becomes one lane wide? The outside lane yellow car believes that as the allowed lane is the outside lane, he has the right of way as he is not "changing lanes in the circle". The inside lane blue car believes he has the right of way as he does not need to cross a dotted line to continue whereas the yellow car crossed the dotted line to enter the allowed lane.
I'd say both are wrong for not avoiding a crash but I don't know who gets the ticket.

I recall that someone posted this roundabout advice on a previous thread.
"Don't drive next to another vehicle when in a roundabout!"
I have found it to be sound advice.

My Opinion:
1. Always expect the unexpected.
2. Never run parallel to a car in a roundabout.
3. Drive more carefully during the snowbird season as they are more drivers who will not know or observe the proper etiquette in a roundabout.
This year, I have witnessed too many people going 3/4 around the roundabout in the right lane.
Some people are always quick to blame another driver even when they are wrong in a given situation. Last night someone was starting to cut off a cart making a turn from a tunnel that I was the passenger in and yelled, "you are driving too fast in TV". How about accepting the fault for putting yourself in danger by trying to cut off someone with an ill advised turn?
I usually try to be forgiving of others mistakes as they are of mine. Let's be careful out there!

I left my home not two hours ago - hit by a car on my bicycle....just home from the police/fire/ambulance...I will create the same type of image off of Google Earth....this was a very purposeful "mirror hit" while I was in the cart lane (to the left of the cart lane)....only...I got the plate number....and so did the police.....oh, my driver also had a very impressive horn.....once I get the full police report (as it is public record) I will post name and license plate number (that I honestly forget now, but calling 911 it was the first thing I said).
Have a safe day all - the rumors about "them" (snowbirds) seem to so far be 100% accurate....
I do hope you'll post it...

It happened 4 months or 500 curses while driving ago.

I don't know of any state where you make a left turn from the right lane except here for some reason. Simple if you're going to make a left turn enter the circle in the left lane.

That has to be a painting error. All the other examples are right lane is right turn only.
