From the internet. Easy to understand. Can change on a dime of course.
Is there a major concern about the possibility of sinkholes as a :sing:result of Irma in TV? What will happen to the cost of residential insurance in the future? I remember that after Charlie hit in 2004, my mom found it extremely difficult to get property insurance although she only sustained the loss of one tile on her roof. When she found an insurance carrier, she paid 4 times what she had previously paid in insurance.

Channel 6 on Spectrum just said Sumter, Lake and Marion worst place to be in Central Florida. Should we try to get out ....but where? East to Daytona?

As of 9 PM, eye of IRMA is approaching Varadero, Cuba which about 390 Miles south of us. Moving at 9MPH WNW. It is actually about 50 miles east of being due South.
Looking at impacts even at this time in Jacksonville, even further from the eye. Rather impressive.

There may be some interpretation issues. While the max winds with Irma are at 130 mph, they will be dropping. What we experience in The Villages will be less since the eye wall will be some distance from us. The sustained winds will be less than the gusts. The weather.com forecast, which I believe is computer generated, might actually be an expected sustained value, as I think about it. So, it is entirely possible that sustained values of 70 mph with higher gusts is in our future. I recommend watching the Weather Channel and/or local networks for the latest info from the NHC.

That's a PROBLEM. If I wasn't a "Sand Flee" and up here in NC, I'd have my home there boarded up like I did in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties years ago. I lived and worked as a firefighter in Homestead during Andrew then moved to Palm Beach county and got hit by 3 more hurricanes in '04-'05. I hope that after this thing hits the District will step up and give us some "guidance" on the use of storm shutters. But, as usual, a catastrophe has to happen before someone acts.

Using my GPS and the coordinates from 8 am Sunday Irma Eye location 20 Miles ESE of Key West and Coordinates of LSL the current location of the IRMA Eye is 300 Miles South and the Eye is still east of TV by about 40 Miles. Current speed 8 MPH NNW.
My 9PM Check Saturday said 390 Miles south and 50 miles east of TV.

NHC now (8:00AM) has The Villages in it's 10-15" rain accumulation. Hurricane force (sustained) wind probability back to 25% after being 10% last night.
If you are in a neighborhood with drains, make sure they are clear now.

I think what eremite06 wants to know is what kind of window protection is allowed by The Villages, not what kind to use. I don't think there is anything specifically about hurricane shutters in the covenants we signed.
So in the end I think the only way to find out is to pick out what you want to use and go to ARC. I know when I went to the hurricane preparedness show the shutter vendors there all had examples of installations they had done in The Villages... of course I don't know if they actually went to ARC before they did the job though.

The National Hurricane Center has excellent data, and explains how to interpret it.
Start at the home page for NOAA National Hurricane Center (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/)
Then, as shown in image below, click on the wind speed map
This takes you to a screen where there is an option for Wind Probs see image below.
Click on Wind Probs It takes you to a page loaded with data.
The second paragraph will be something like this:
HURRICANE IRMA WIND SPEED PROBABILITIES NUMBER 45
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL112017
0900 UTC SUN SEP 10 2017
the last line of which has a time stamp, in this case 0900 UTC today. Subtract 4 hours to get local time, so this advisory was issued at 5 AM today. It is a 24 hour clock so 2000 UTC would be 1600 local EDT or 4 PM
Next look at the definitions of wind speeds
CHANCES OF SUSTAINED (1-MINUTE AVERAGE) WIND SPEEDS OF AT LEAST
...34 KT (39 MPH... )
...50 KT (58 MPH).. )
...64 KT (74 MPH... )
So the expectation that the wind speed will meet or exceed the MPH continuously for 60 seconds, not a short gust.
And then a lengthy chart of times and locations that begins
- - - - WIND SPEED PROBABILITIES FOR SELECTED LOCATIONS - - - -
again recall these times listed are NOT our time rather Universal or if you like England Time, subtract 4 hours
see image below
Scroll the location list to see The Villages, it for now is a listed option.
It looks like this
THE VILLAGES 34 12 76(88) 8(96) X(96) X(96) X(96) X(96)
THE VILLAGES 50 X 50(50) 23(73) X(73) X(73) X(73) X(73)
THE VILLAGES 64 X 11(11) 14(25) X(25) X(25) X(25) X(25)
The columns from left to right
Location [The Villages] Wind in Knots [34] % chance of that speed in the first 12 hour segment [12%], chance during the next 12 hours [76%] chance of that wind during the entire time since the beginning of the storm [88 = 76+12] Chance in the next 12 hours [8%], cumulative chance [96%], the next chance is X which is less than 1%
34 Kt is 39 MPH the definition of tropical storm wind
The next line is risk of 50 Knots which cumulative is 73% 50 kt = 58 MPH
The last shows risk of 64 Knots which cumulative is 25% 64 Kts is hurricane cat 1 wind of 74 MPH
So as of the latest advisory, the local chance of NOT having a hurricane wind lasting one minute sustained is 75%. Briefer gusts are not covered in this prediction

Tuccillo,
On radar there is an enlarging breach in the southwestern section of the eyewall and a larger clear section below it. Also the southwestern thunderstorm activity has waned a lot. Starting to look a bit ragged.
Do you think it's trying, not very successfully, to do an eyewall replacement or is the shear and dry air affecting it more than anticipated? Also it's out of the Florida straits into the low heat potential of the eastern Gulf.
NHC has lowered it's intensity forecast also to a high end Cat.1 when it reaches this latitude, but doesn't mention the eyewall appearance.

At 80 mph in TV---if that does happen I would call that good news. If you live in a coastal area of Florida then hurricane shutters are appropriate. In The Villages----not so much in my opinion.

I'm finding Channel 9 is now doing a great job. Since landfall Irma has tracked a straight path, channel 9 has drawn a straight line north of what the projected path would be. It would be in Lake County just east of TV, probably over Fruitland Park heading due north. If that is the case, we'll get part of the eye wall but we'll be more to the left of the eye and the better side, if there is such a thing.

Wind or gusts at 95 MPH?
They were saying Doppler Radar in Tampa can tell them the eye wall wind speed and it's currently 96 when they reported just before my last post. So they are saying the eye wall wind speed will be 95 and they were projecting the eye wall path, which is directly over TV.

Wesh update
tracks the eye wall right over us now or very slightly east, expect 95mph between 2-3 AM,
but as we all know that can change again

We live in LaBelle and just saw the sky put on a show like the Northern Lights. It went from fuchsia to a glowing turquoise
We saw that too in Osceola Hills. It came from where the high tension lines are. It did look like the northern lights.

Of course dear husband is out.
I guess I'll worry for both of us. 😬

That's worrisome, but it can change on a dime.

At 5AM it is still windy and rain comes in bursts but the worst of it is over. We still have power(SECO) in Duval. I can see no damage outside but it is still dark.

It's about 6:45AM and it still is windy out... checking the weather stations near us (Pinellas) through the night it looks like wind speed in the 20's with some gusts close to 40 and that's about what it is now. Our street seems to have quite a bit of water puddled in it. Didn't lose power. Too dark and windy to check for damage but all the palms I can see are still standing.

Here in the Village of Charlotte/Yaborough Way 8.30 AM there does not appear to be any damage to our house after a quick outside inspection. We have power thanks to SECO and TV/Internet thanks to Comcast Infinity. It is still windy 25 mph gusts 40 mph but only a few spots of light rain. Hope everyone in TV has been as lucky.

I was watching our retention pond late last night as the water level kept rising and then seemed to stop. I noticed the top of the weir was about 3-4 feet above the pond level before the rains started. This morning I checked the weir and water was flowing into it. There is some debris on top of the grate over the weir but it doesn't appear to be impacting it too much. It is nice to see that it was properly situated relative to the elevation of the houses around the pond.

Hi! We had to evacuate my elderly grandparents from the historic side of the villages... does anyone know the status of the mobile homes there? Do they have a home we can bring them back to with power and clean water? If this post is not aloud here I apologize... thank you in advance for any information!!

We have a lake behind us in Gilchrist.
The water level is at least 5 feet higher then before the storm.
Very scary!

Thank you for that offer! I am actually in Arizona trying to figure out the situation remotely... but based off your comment, sounds like the historic side is flooded?

All is well here in Lindsey Villa's here in Sanibel, Just a few small tree's need to be stood back up a couple of screens came loose oh and a porto potty flew up the road from me. Glad it went the other way and landed int the street and not someone else's house. Good luck cleaning that up eh. Cell phone is spotty, but internet and power is all good.

I just drove past the mobile home park on Rolling Acres Road. I didn't see any damage at all to those mobile homes. Hope everything is OK on the historic side.

My friends' mobile home in Historical is fine.
That doesn't mean that every mobile home is OK; but some survived and are fine.
