At this moment I am sitting outside at Sumter Depot awaiting Villages airport bus to meet my guest. I needed to move twice, outside mind you! to avoid the downwind of overpowering perfumed ladies presumably heading for a seat on an aircraft to assault the senses of others. What can they be thinking??? Grrrr

Maybe they didn’t realize they put too much perfume on.

From the internet:
<< With advancing age, the ability of humans to detect and discriminate odors declines. In light of the rapid progress in analyzing molecular and structural correlates of developing and adult olfactory systems, the paucity of information available on the aged olfactory system is startling.

The decline in the ability to detect and discriminate odors in aged humans leads to a decrease in the quality of life and diminished appetite with accompanying impacts on nutritional status. Decreased olfactory function with aging parallels generalized age-related deficits in sensory functions and cognition that occur in the absence of obvious disease states. >>

It doesn't even need to be smoke. Smokers stink even when not smoking.

I check out books every once in a while that you just know a smoker just had. I have to air them out for a while before I can read them by using a plastic bag and some clothes dryer fresh scent sheets.

One of my favorite people here in the Villages smokes. At least the last time I met her. I must really like her to put up with the smoke smell.

I have the same problem with library books from time to time.

Also about once a week I receive a priority mail package full of forwarded mail and bills from a couple who smoke heavily. I do not take it in the house immediately but open it up outside and fan the paper for a while. Even after all that after several days if I get my nose too close to any of it the paper still reeks.

In medieval Europe bathing was frowned upon, because of the lack of central heating--lets face it we stink if we don't bath-thus the need for perfume -its a mask for human body odor--nothing aphrodisiac about it

I do too! Don't ask me why, because I hate cigarette smoke. And I would not want the cigar smoke to be in the house, even though I like the aroma.

My German professor-- named Eugene Grotegut-- used to smoke a pipe in class and that reminds me of him so I like that smell but probably would not want it really strong in the house. Reno News & Review -

I am very unfortunate that it is a life or death situation for me sitting next to someone drenched in perfume or to be around chemical smells even hair spray or hand sanitizer. My throat closes up and I cannot talk or even breathe. The doctor has me carry an Epipen with me now. I wish they would realize that for some people it is not just that you don't like to breathe it but that it causes physical problems for others.

I've witnessed first-hand how drastic this is for some people. In Michigan our pastor,'s wife had to sit out in the narthex because of her perfume /hair spray allergy. She needed to take meds to come to our home due to the dog and former cats.

My feeling is take a good shower with a mild soap and skip the perfume. It can choke even those of us with no allergies.

A woman I know years ago had to give up flying because her allergy to peanuts was so severe that her throat closed up from their odor within an enclosed aircraft cabin. Another woman I know starts sneezing around certain fragrances.

When people politely ask, "Do you mind if I smoke?" I immediately ask, " Do you mind if I fart?" : )

We were on a long flight to Barcelona with a woman drenched with perfume. It was uncomfortable.
Halfway through the trip, she went to the Ladies Room and put on more perfume.

My worst flight was back from Italy sitting in front of a very loud mouthed horsey voiced young woman who brayed away, never shutting up over the 9 or 10 hour flight! I spent as much time out of my seat as possible and even dreamed about it for days. I must have developed a slight case of PTSD from the experience. At least with perfume I can use the air nozzles to blow it away.

Sorry, but as an epipen carrier I can not suck it up. I constantly have to make adjustments because of strong perfume smells. Almost every class in TV people wear way to much perfume.....even tho most instructors ask politely not to. As a pool walker there is nothing worse than perfume spoiling a beautiful peaceful walk. I have had to cut my walk short a few times because I just couldn’t’t get far enough away from it. But i’d Rather cut my walk short than have my throat close up before I can get to my epipen which I can’t take in the pool.

This brings back a couple of memories. First, I was staying at the Sheraton Cadillac in Detroit (Not sure it still exists). I was on the top or next to the top floor. There was a convention of southern baptist women in the city and the hotel was filled with the conventioneers. In the morning, I got on the elevator and it stopped at every floor, 29 if my memory is correct. and another lady got on and each was swimming in perfume. By the time the elevator reached the first floor, I thought I would pass out. The other was I worked for a consulting company in Cambridge Mass. and we had a client, a large New York bank and had an appointment with a senior exec. As was common then, the big wigs from Harvard and MIT Sloan school of business were actively earning side money on consulting gigs and on this trip, I was flying with the assistant dean of men from MIT's Sloan. I still remember his name. While in flight, I wondered where the hell the smell was coming from. Well this guy was a Scot and I guess he took a shower every other month whether he had to or not. I being naive about such things, I couldn't believe this. The lady we met with was most gracious and I hoped and prayed during the meeting that her nose was less than functional. I'll probably catch hell from all Scots now. Amazing what we remember.

I can appreciate your situation. I will agree strong perfume or stale tobacco smoke is far from pleasant.

But not to sound uncaring but your medical condition is no concern for others. If you cant go out to minglewith others, no matter how offensive you think they are, you need to adjust your lifestyle
But those that stink also need to tone it down.

It's very sad when older people can not tell how much they smell after putting on perfume. It happens all the time. What's worse is someone who doesn't take that into consideration because it's all about themselves.

Thank you in advance for washing out the crevices in which one can hide dimes and the sweaty folds of fat.

And that is just due to the condition of their faces! In some circles they are known as alligator ladies on account of the appearance and condition of their hides from all the the time spent sunning themselves - like alligators - and with similar results.

LOL, and lots of MEN are just as bad bathing themselves with the 50 year old English Leather they have left over from high school. And the damned fumes from gas golf carts make me choke.

It's a losing battle!

How about a couple other oldies but goodies, Hai Karate, Aqua Velva, Brut, Quorum Cologne that are still available, they store will pay you to take them, nasty stuff. How about a combo plan of one of the Colognes with a Vitalis Chaser, do not use Vitalis near an open flame.

People who overdo it just don't know that less is better. I was militant about smokers rights until I had to quit. Sometimes I get near someone who is smoking and it is heavenly other times I just move because it is killing me. I never abused with Cologne but am guilty with smoke for which I am truly sorry. I was so focused on me I didn't consider others. Live and learn can't have a mulligan on this one.

English Leather is the worst. Somehow just walking past someone causes it to transfer to you clothes. :D

Nothing smells as good as Dial soap used recently.

In almost ten years here I haven't encountered the overuse of scent often, but it is a gender equal offense.

People don't use scent like they did thirty-forty years ago.

Anyone remember Ciara?

I travel internationally quite often .. If you are stuck against the window and have two people that haven't bathed since last year sitting next to you, you would pray for that perfume smell .. Like everything, its all a matter of perspective

Whatever your problem is that requires you to carry an epipen. I assume it is not a new issue. Surely, you realize that for most people they simply do not know.

RE: getting away from people.
Frankly, I enjoy time alone. This place is far too congested for me.
IF, you find a place to be alone. DO NOT POST IT HERE for it will not be your hidden corner for long.
