It is with great sadness that I must let the members of TOTV know about the passing of longtime poster Muncle. As many of you know, he has been battling lung cancer for well over a year. He lost his battle on Saturday, Nov 7 at 5:30am. His sister, who lives in the Villages, notified a former TOTV member with the news. He will be transported back to his native Kansas City for burial.

His humor, intellect, and heart will be missed. May he rest in Peace.

How sad. I will miss his humor and his intellectual posts (that I never understood) on TOTV.. I wrote to him last month, to ask him to please come to the luncheon but didn't get a response, now I know why. He did attend one lunch, last year, I believe, and it was a pleasure to meet him.

RIP, Muncle, you were the greatest!! I'll personally miss you. Kath

My heart is heavy. Muncle liked to poke at me and I poked back, calling him Uncle Muncle. I loved his humor. I did meet him at that luncheon and the first thing he said was "I'm only coming in if Chelsea isn't carrying a gun." LOL He sure could be a nut.

My prayers are with his family. Well... there's one more bright star in Heaven.
Rest in peace, dear friend.

This is truly upsetting news. As others have stated already, his wit was a welcome read for TOTV. I loved it when he would chastise posters who called him "Muncie" instead of "Muncle."

RIP Muncle, you will be missed by many.

This is so sad. I recall his most recent posts regarding "The Shack". I met Muncle at one of the first luncheons at Crispers. We both retired from the Federal Government and knew some of the same agencies and a few of the same people. He will be missed. I always read his posts.

Muncle and I joined TOTV at very close to the same time, two years ago. A couple of baby boomers from the beginning of that big boom, sharing that common history, just a couple of old boomers connecting through cyberspace.

Munc and I had some good times bouncing posts back and forth for fun, off and on, for two years. I always loved it when Munc came out to play. .

When I joined TOTV, I was completely new to this world of forums. I did not know what a forum was. And now, here I sit, a woman at a laptop, trying to type, with tears in my eyes for a man I never met but somehow felt like I knew. A brilliant man, with a fine wit. A big teddy bear, with a little touch of grizzly bear – just enough. Our Muncle.

And I just have to tell all of you that I know that you are a really good bunch of people and fun to talk to.

But................

Munc was always my favorite.

Goodbye, my cyberfriend, Munc. It won’t be the same around here without you. But I know you are at peace.

Here's how I remember Muncle. Fumar drew him out in a thread about "Nude picture alert," as only Fumar could.

Muncle made me laugh a lot, even when he was being cantankerous. He was a retired old fed with a clear outlook and a complete
lack of understanding how anybody could blame The Developer for everything. I seem to remember Muncle inviting some posters
to take the highway out of town, and with Muncle you knew, even if he didn't say it, that he meant to add "and be on that highway
by midnight."

Who would have ever thought a stranger on an internet forum could worm his way into our hearts like Muncle did?

Safe passage, old friend.

Fumar, have I git a diet got you. But first a Boomer-like aside:

Many years ago, before it was the Adkins diet and was just the carbo-cal diet (mid 70's), I determined that my daily limit was about 55 carbo-cals. I soon discovered that Miller Lite (a fairly new invention at the time) had 28 carbo-cals per bottle. At the time I was a bartender/cook in a BBQ and had full access to the kitchen. So I figured I could eat all the meat I wanted (no C-Cs) and drink 20 bears a day. I was only able to follow this rugged regimen for a month, but lost 19 lbs.

But I digress. Fumar, I've lost a ton of weight (okay, .0375 of a ton), but the chemo and radiation ain't worth it, though I feel great now and am lighter than I've been since Basic Training.

Now, I've not been asked to participate in "The Men of TOTV" calendar nor would I expect to be. However, recently I drove my latest toy to LSL on a Tuesday evening and had a couple ladies stop me to take my picture. Hey, I'm humble enough to think maybe it was the cart, but who knows. Below is a shot of my self-indulgence.

PS, since the pic, I've shaved my beard. Never did before because I had more chins than a Chinese phone book. Now it's down to just a wattle. But Jan, Tony, & Co., if you do need me, I don't do nudes.

Thank you for posting the picture. I wondered a lot how Muncle looked. I understand that Muncle was a nickname given to him by his nieces. Someone told me that he never married and had no children.

I have thought of him dozens of times since I heard of his passing. I can't recall ever hearing his real name and looked in todays obituaries and none fit him. It is wonderful and good that we can know and care about a person that we have never physically met. Dear Bill, You have been such an influence on us and such a part of our life here on Talk of the Villages. You are so missed.

Thank you again Tony.

Tony,

I think you are a mind reader. Last night, during a bout of insomnia, I thought of Muncle and remembered this picture that he posted. I planned to search for it this morning.

That is one of my favorite Muncle posts. I will also say how flattered I was that he (a well-read man in the W.F. Buckley mold) noted a few times that what I (a confirmed moderate) wrote made sense. But the big winner was his post where he talked of stealing Boomer away from Mr. Boomer.

Here is how Muncle explained his name in a thread asking about members' screen name.

My TOTV name is one I used to use on NTN trivia and is courtesy of one of my nieces and her friends. About 20 -25 years ago, I used to return to KC periodically to visit family. At a pub one evening, one of my nieces introduced me to her friends as "This is my uncle Bill." (She said it rather rapidly, running the words together.) Well, one of the rather cute young girls started calling me Muncle Bill. Hey, when you're a 40 year old bachelor and some good looking 25 year old girl calls you anything, you respond. Unfortunately, the name stuck among some of the girls. I was back recently for a funeral and a rather fashionable middle-aged woman walked up, hugged me, and said "Hey Muncle!"

About the avatar/picture: I can't see it from here so I don't know which one it is. Probably has no significance whatsoever, and will likely be changed in a short while.

It's unfortunate that the avatars do change in old posts whenever you update your profile. Kinda makes posts like Red's earlier one seem a bit strange. Here's the picture of the blushing bride and her comment that her pic shows her with her daughter. :yikes:

Muncle did seem to joust a bit with Boomer.

Kate, This post is from the Rosetta stone thread. Is this the one you referred to?

Boomer, I find your writing to be boring in the morning. I find your writing to be boring in the evening. :mornincoffee:
Boomer, I find your writing to be boring before midnight. I find your writing to be boring after midnight. :faint:

Boomer, I find your writing to be boring in English. So I will likely find your writing to be boring in the Italian, unless you can arrange for Lesley Ann to come over and read it to me. :22yikes:

As if it were not already PO (to the) mco, I am kidding about the boring part -- you're always interesting if sometimes a tad removed from the vertical room support and if I were feeling a bit better and didn't have an innate fear of Mr. Boomer, you'd have to check every time you threw the dish water out the back door for fear of hitting me. I was not, of course, kidding about Lesley Ann. :pepper2:

Now let's talk Italian. Cop out! Cop out! Cop out! Just an attempt to avoid the more difficult Eastern European languages to take one of those easy Romance things. This ain't German, Russian, or Polish. Just say it in English, wave your hands a bit, move the sentence structure around however you like it, and yell occasionally. They'll think you're a native.

Buona fortuna.

TOTVers,

Many of us make charitable contributions in the name of friends/loved ones who have passed. It is harder to do with a cyber friend such as Muncle. As I was reading your many accolades and memories, it brought to mind a post Muncle made a few weeks back...

"Sometime before the end of the year, I'm going to get a few hundred bucks in tens and drive around TV handing them out to those hard-working guys and gals (maybe legal, probably not) who work their butts off for minimum wages keeping this place looking so great. No speech, just give them the money with a quiet "Gracias" or whatever the proper word is. No big woof."

Not sure if her ever got to do this - but if a few of us did, I think it would be a fitting tribute,
