Last time our granddaughter in her twenties came to visit she requested we stock up on fresh avocados so she could spread them on toast for breakfast.

Anyone tried it? It didn't look good to me. I like mine made into guacamole.

For breakfast I like some nice oatmeal or cheerios.

What do you eat for breakfast?

Greek yogurt, a banana, and a cup of tea.

My son got me in the habit, as well. I start with a piece of toast, then spread 1/2 avocado on it. Add a sliced, hardboiled egg, and sprinkle salt & pepper or Thatcher's Creole Seasoning on it. Healthy fats, protein, and keeps you going for at least 5-6 hours.

Yeah the avocado toast has been the rage for a while. It's one of the most healthy fats you can eat.

I'm trying to incorporate more dark greens and purple into my diet. Personally I don't get enough protein if I don't eat meat.

I grew up eating avocados in various ways. They contain healthy fats, very good for the skin among other things. Guacamole is my favorite dip but I prefer it on tortilla chips rather than the recent toast trend. Starbucks Is Finally Serving Avocado Toast - Eater (https://www.eater.com/2017/3/21/14999680/starbucks-avocado-toast)

The price of Hass avocados, especially the organic ones, has gone through the roof over the past year or so due to the avocado on toast fad.

Helpful hint. Retain the pit in the unused half of an avocado or in a bowl of mashed avocado or guacamole and cover it as airtight as possible with Saran Wrap to keep it from blackening. Refrigerate it of course.

Bon appetit!

For breakfast we eat whatever is left over from prior meals, tacos, catfish, pork chops, whatever. If no leftovers, then it's a poached egg and toast. My husband always has fresh fruit salad prepared. Always, 365 days per year.

We keep fresh fruit available too, 365.

12 grain toasted, spread some natural peanut butter, then spread cilantro, jalapeno hummus on top. sounds bad to some, but actually quite tasty and good for you.

Cinnamon raisin bread with peanut butter, and coffee of course. Sometimes yogurt, sometimes just a banana. I used to eat oatmeal almost every morning up north, but now that we have moved here, I have no desire for it. Strange.

I can see that. Oatmeal is better in the cold.

I love grapefruit but i just find it to be a pain in the ass. Did mix some grapefruit juice with lemon vodka on easter, though not for breakfast.

First introduced to avocados on toast when we moved to CA in the early 70’s. I really enjoy acocados and many morninggs, have half of one, sliced, along with scrambled eggs, raisin bread toast, fruit and a cup of coffee. Trader Joe’s sometimes has bags of small avocados and when I have those available, an entire one is on the menu. Good nutrition, good fat, but remember, they are high in calories, so if watching your caloric intake, adjust accordingly.

That looks the best to me.

Ever since I saw this thread early this morning, I have been singing a sweet, lovely, lilting, little song — in my head:

”How Are Things in Guacamole?”

— Surely, you know that song. I think it is from Finian’s Rainbow.

— If you do know the song in my head, I bet I just stuck it in your head, too. :) You’re welcome.

And, now, I have a question for you avocado experts.

How do I choose the perfect avocado?

Avocado toast has been on our table for years. Usually because had one going too ripe and it was a quick breakfast or lunch.

How do I choose the perfect avocado?

Well I am no expert but I have eaten them for 70+ years. The main thing is to avoid those having dark spots on their skin or signs of bruising. Sometimes you can find some ripe. Squeeze them gently. If they give a little, like a ripe peach, they are ready to eat. If they are on the squishy side they are still good for guacamole unless they have gone over. Normally I buy them hard and ripen them as follows.

Avocados do not ripen on the tree; they ripen or “soften” after they have been harvested. To speed up the avocado ripening process we recommend placing unripe avocados in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana for two to three days until they are ripe. We do not recommend any other method of ripening.

Commercially sold avocados are usually Hass avocados. Hass avocado - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hass_avocado)

I have an avocado tree in my yard which I bought at a nursery 20 years ago. It produces a lot of avocados but they are rather tasteless (perhaps it is a Fuerte, not a Hass) so I buy mine at a store. lol

Pitiful?

Ohhhhh, tom, I just got it! Luv it! Thanks for playing. :)

Also, manaboutown, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I was serious about that.

I know how to sniff a cantaloupe for perfection.

I know how to check a grapefruit for heft that translates into juice that makes it worth getting squirted. (I always put my glasses on first though.)

I know how to ripen peaches and juggle apples.

But avocados have eluded me — so far.

Now, I know.

I like mine with a poached egg on top. Both First Watch and Metro Diner have very good avocado toast--First Watch's edges out Metro because the bread is so good.

I rarely eat it at home, though--I save it as a dining-out treat. Too much healthy fat is still too much fat for my particular metabolism.

I do not have the recipe but my mother incorporated pieces of avocado and slices of grapefruit into a delicious Romaine lettuce salad. This thread reminded me of that. Bet my daughter has the recipe!

My favorite sushi is a rainbow roll which contains avocado slices. Yum!

Aussies really know how to eat brekky. Flat whites and brekky sandwiches, avocado toast, eggs, streaky bacon... Yum.:icon_hungry:
I bought an espresso maker just so our son & dil can make us flat whites when they visit.

I started making avocado toast about 10 years ago. I put sliced avocado, thin slice of cheese(what ever I have on hand), and a slice of tomato and place it under the broiler.

High five? Every time I mention liking peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches, I get quite the look.

I've been on a breakfast kick of guacamole on toast recently, alternating with grilled cheese or fried egg sandwiches.

What brands of wheat bread do others recommend? I like dense/heavy loaves, especially seeded. Most grocery brands are too soft and airy for my taste.

Sprouted grain, seven-grain, rye bread? I also like dense loaves, don't like fluffy loaves.

For me, the only really good heavy wheat bread is the one made by the French baker who sells at Brownwood --- but, but, but .......... he is leaving to spend the summer in France in about three weeks.

My breakfast, every day, 2oz walnuts, half grapefruit, two eggs up on toast.

Avocados for breakfast? Sorry. Late 70's and still in good health.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that breakfast, but I cannot eat ham or bacon and hash browns for breakfast, my insides do not appreciate being fed that much fat, so my two eggs on toast are poached. My otherhalf LOVES eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausage and anything else you can get on his plate, but he does not eat until dinner after that.
