I don't add onion. This is so delicious. It is so simple but it is almost like a dessert. The butter and sugar is not good for you, but you deserve to try this once.
Have you eaten this? What additions do you make? I have had it with green pepper but I like it plain with just bread and butter and white sugar.

My mother used stewed tomatoes as a sauce over breaded fried flounder that I was sent to the deli to pick up on Fridays. For the longest time I didn't know it was served any other way.

I have made a dish close to this. But instead of croutons I used Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix. Also used the onion and brown sugar and sage and rosemarry. Still delicious just more of a side dish. I also always use Pastene San Marzano tomatoes. Use the ground for pasta sauce and the whole peeled for this dish.

Sounds delicious! Must be awesome with fresh REAL summer tomatoes.

Stewed tomatoes on top of homemade Mac and Cheese can't be beat. Accompany it with fried " Chip Steak " with gravy made with cornstarch from the steak " bits " left in the pan and you have lost two months of your life. It tastes that good.
