It's time to get on with our lives! The villages needs to take the chains off the gates and allow residents the use of OUR amenities. I and many more like me have had it. I would rather take a calculated risk and live life on my terms than to cower in my living room listening to the liberal talking heads feeding me lies and half truths. It should be clear by now that this entire fiasco will be the end of the Republic unless we as individuals say"no more".
As for me, I'll take my chances out in the fresh air with others who enjoy playing senior softball. Yes I'll be taking a risk, but it needs to be my choice. As for those of you who wish to condemn my attitude as reckless I say MYOB. I know there will be many who will say this is selfish, I say it's more selfish to sit comfortably at home while Millions of young families struggle without work, without money, without hope.

What you can't understand, 1st time poster, is that you, and all the other people wanting the chains taken down, are putting other people at risk with your "me first" attitude.
The Villages knows what they're doing.

So what is your playing a game doing for anyone out of work and not having money. Sounds more like entitled whining that you can not play your little game. Also if you are reckless and uncaring about other citizens you are infringing on MY BUSINESS. When your choices and risky behavior begin to possibly effect me, my perception becomes one of you do not care about me so I need to protect myself.

I was on a very good team with a great bunch of guys this past winter season. Before the recreation department decided to cancel the rest of the season, we were given the choice to play or not to play. Had anyone chose not to play for a concern about their risk of potential exposure to covid-19, there would be no repercussions from the softball league. I was one of the players that chose to not play. It was shortly thereafter that many activities were cancelled and that softball was officially cancelled. I too miss playing softball very much but I will patiently wait for this to pass and play when I feel I won't be at risk of bringing anything home to my wife who is one of the people who are in the high risk categories. Stay safe everyone!

As the saying goes...you can't fix stupid. Unfortunately your selfish attitude will put others at risk when you shop, or come in contact with others who do not know about your risky behavior. Why do you think you have the right to put others at risk? Are your rights more important than theirs? I don't think so. Grow up and make a few sacrifices for the good of mankind. The world will be a better place if you do...

Surely you have some empathy for those who are struggling financially and desperately need to get back to work. As retirees, we can stay home and wait this out if we choose. Unfortunately there are citizens with young children to feed and bills to pay don’t have that luxury. Are you comfortable forcing some families to go on welfare? So you want EVERYONE except those that service YOUR needs to stay inside? We plan to proceed cautiously but won’t criticize other peoples choices.

I agree completely with all that Artar said above. The liberal media has made this appear much worse than it is. Every death we have now is attributed to the Corona Virus. I would like to see the total death statistics for March and April 2019 compared to 2020.
I believe the increase in 2020 is far smaller than the numbers they are posting. Keep in mind that every projection from the beginning to now has been absolutely wrong. How can we believe anything they say. We are all responsible for ourselves, and anyone who believes that staying away from people can keep them safe should do exactly that. Stay home, avoid everyone. As for those of us that go out, we can keep distance away from others, and act responsibly. Let the businesses open, and allow the employees choose to go to work or not based on their own personal beliefs. The government is treating us like cattle. I am a human being, and I refuse to be treated like an animal being led by political hacks.

Listen child, I’m sure your mom and dad made tough choices that you didn’t like when you were a rebellious young person. They did it to protect you and care for you. Even though you thought mom and dad were sometimes unfair, and didn’t understand you can look back through the years and see they were right and acting your best interest can’t you? No? Really? Well its what the rest of us call wisdom and maturity. You might want to work on that, and yes, though you have already denied it, you do have a moral and ethical responsibility to us all. That is something else you mom and dad were trying to teach you. Work on that too. Oh yes, may god bless you.

With all due respect I think you are very selfish. Go play on your own. You may want to take the risk but there are others who do not. They are not only thinking of themselves but their friends and families who they could infect as well. Yes, there are people who need to work but this will end. It is times like this that we need to come together , stop this political criticism and be what I call a decent human being. Activities such as softball, pickle ball, tennis, all are sports where people tend to be close, they pick up the same ball, they perspire-very easy to spread the virus. To me, you are a selfish person who clearly only thinks of himself. Sad.

If you are afraid, stay home, in the closet with the door locked. The rest of the world has to get on with it, whether it is going to work or playing. They never closed the golf courses but I have seen many people on the golf course not maintain social distancing. The rules were disorganized and uneven at best. I cannot wait to do the things I want to do, dancing or going to the gym. Enough is enough.

Govt. is note my Mom & Dad and I'm not a child. Can't believe you actually wrote that dribble. I may not have a lot of time left at 76 yrs old, but I don't want to do it sitting in my house without friends and the activities my current health will allow me to enjoy. I want to play golf the way it was designed, I want to play pickle ball better then I do as a realitive newly at it. You want to stay in your house, you can still do that after our freedoms are returned. Even that is statement "after our freedoms are returned" is an indication of how sad our situation is , when we think we need Govt to give us back our rights.

Wow look at all the saints on here trying to protect others and calling people that want to live life idiots. How many of you have had a few drinks and drove home, Offered a diabetic sweets, not used your turn signal? You are risking the wellbeing of others. People should be able to live life the way they chose without other people trying to shove views down their throat. You are the same people that try to tell me who I should vote for and who and where to worship. My point is.... None of us are saints and we are all just trying to get through life the most enjoyable way possible. If you’re scared stay in and if you’re not get out and enjoy life. This is supposed to be the friendliest town but this virus has made it not so friendly.

You have the freedom to stay away from anything you feel is better for your health and you always had that right. On the other hand apll those that want the other rights that were taken away, want them back. the freedom to free association. Play the amenities that we payed for and moved here to enjoy. You don't have to participate in that if you CHOOSE. We want to CHOOSEa different road to travel. That ois not selfishness it is just freedom we have given up to Govt.

More people will die from the lockdown than from covid. Who's selfish? People are not getting cancer treatments, heart surgeries, etc. All surgeries which are not emergency are "elective". Those have all been cancelled. Don't those peoples' lives count for something? All you retirees who don't work, you're not that inconvenienced. But there are people who spent their whole life building a business, they're wiped out. Have you seen the food lines? 30,000,000 people are out or work. 30 million! Do you know what suffering that entrails? Meanwhile, the deaths from covid are less than some previous flu seasons. Try to look at a situation from other people's perspectives.

Each person should be provided with options, and be able to exercise those options that work for him/her. Open the fields, the pools, the pickle ball courts. Those who want to refrain from activities, no one is stopping you from exercising the right to protect yourself by staying away from people who participate, getting your goods shipped and staying in. And I celebrate your choice. Those who want to participate in activities, no one should stop you from exercising the right to engage in those activities that fuel you. And I celebrate your choice. Bottom line, let's allow people to make choices.

We stopped playing PB long before The Villages closed the courts. I understand that many want to wait until every last bit of this virus is gone and that’s ok. But there is a time where we as retirees or people who are still working to support themselves and their families need to begin to get back to normal life. With such a limited number of cases in The Villages and tri county area and with social distancing it is my OPINION that we can begin to get outside and start our lives again.

It’s past time to opens outdoor sports. They are encouraging everyone to eat, teach etc outdoors, so why restrict sports. Most like tennis, pickle ball are self distancing in there setup. Also sun, heat and humidity are the enemy of virus and lack of exercise is the enemy of old folks. So let’s get going and and those who are worried do not have to participate. Lack of exercise is killing us right now!

So tired of the "can't fix stupid" phrase and calling others "selfish" comments. Having a different opinion does not make another stupid or selfish. Sad that even as adults, seniors even, people don't know how to converse respectfully without the verbal attacks.

I want to do what I want to do period. That’s a typical human response. So, why not drive when we’re drunk. I think the word is consequences. If you hurt or kill someone you face the consequences. Hey I enjoy it. If you’re asymptomatic and you play softball and perspire and those little sweat drops infect and kill someone else you face no consequences. So, no consequences no problem. If one of your family members succumbed to someone else’s selfish attitude and you knew who that person was, would you simply say, hey they had the right to do what they wanted. I think not. 60,000 people are dead and guess what, no one did it. As the Shaggy song goes, “It wasn’t me”. But someone did do it, they didn’t get it from themselves. If a person’s DNA was transferred with the virus and it could be traced back to the person who transmitted it then we be singing a different tune. Hey I might lose my softball glove in a lawsuit or even my freedom so maybe I can give up softball for a little while longer. Don’t misunderstand me, I go out shopping. I wear a mask and I take my own wipes. If I get the virus at least I’ll know that I did my best to avoid it and if I should have it at least I'm not going to give it to someone else. What I don’t appreciate is people with carefree attitudes shopping without a mask, passing by me within a foot or two and sneezing and coughing. Again, why should they care, there’s no consequences.

Long time listener, first time caller.
I agree in part, with the OP.
However, I'm also getting very sick and tired of being judged for going out and getting on with my life. I get dirty looks, rude comments and more when I go to the store because I'm not wearing a mask. I do not wear this garb because I already had covid and have had an FDA approved antibody test showing that I have the antibodies.
Before you judge people, think about what you DON'T know about them. Maybe if everyone just worried about themselves, we'd have a more harmonious community.
When I see people out and about without face covering, I'm beginning to believe they have had Covid-19 and have developed antibodies.
I'm waiting for the T-shirt that says on the front and back, "I've had Covid-19 and can NOT infect you".

:ohdear: Can not vouch whether you had it or not but if you did, you should know that having antibodies has not been proven to be any protection from not getting it again or even passing it on to others.
Then why are recovered Covid patients being asked to donate their blood for their antibody rich plasma? Transfusing antibody rich plasma has been used in treating Covid-19.

I support your attitude 1000% and I also support those who wish to stay at home to, supposedly, decrease their risk. But, allowing politicians to destroy our freedoms, regardless of their intent, is accepting tyranny.

At the beginning of this, yes, I would have said and did say such an attitude as yours could get us all killed! However, much has happened since, not the least of which is the observation that Covid-19 is not the scourge we all thought, including the experts, it was! Knowledge is power! To further muddy the waters the WHO who once backed China’s propaganda now says the Swedish approach, social distancing when possible, but keeping the economy fully open has their endorsement ! We’re we all hoodwinked? Was this a way for China w the help of the WHO to effectively destroy the economies of other countries because their own suffered? Leveling the playing field , so to speak? Regardless I have changed my tune in that we need to open things back up and I think being overly cautious is not necessarily the way to go. Social distancing where possible & masks when not possible to social distance & effective hand washing should be the limit of our restrictions. When all was said & done the numbers for Sweden who kept their economy running were statistically no different than ours & other countries who followed the US. So other than the real fear( at the time) that our healthcare system would be overwhelmed, none of the other fears came to be! What does that tell us? That our practices of social distancing has worked & in all probability will continue to work with us going about our usual & customary lives. It does require that masks & gloves be readily accessible to ALL! It is still a chore to secure these items! At the same time that we are willing to take our own “risks “ it is important that we do not choose to sue over every & any case of contracted Covid ( sorry for lawyers already foaming at the mouth over anticipated litigations) . I have done an almost 180 & my science/disease education & background tells me it’s time to start living again! Has anyone seen the pool chairs 6 ft. apart even though couples live together they cannot sit together at a pool. Softball players are spread out over the field. We don't get any closer than the clerk at the store. When the team is batting, three players are waiting outside the dugout to bat, two others are coaching first and third base leaving seven in the dugout. So spread them out behind the screen and play ball!!! All of these opening decisions are arbitrary anyway and if you are concerned don't play! I have seen serious violations of the 6 ft rule with 20 golfers congregating while waiting to tee off. Come on folks use common sense and get back to life.

The first set was the entire death count for the state during the first 4 mos. of 2019 (I couldn’t get 2020). All deaths of all residents.

As many of us are disappointed that some in a demographic that has seen so much of life are willing to dismiss those that have more data and knowledge as not worthy of their respect and attention. Risking putting your kids and grandkids through fear, even if you catch it and recover, not only shows disrespect for those that believe otherwise, but also shows uncaring for your family. Let's look at what the science says.
Results: Three hundred and eighteen outbreaks with three or more cases were identified, involving 1245 confirmed cases in 120 prefectural cities. We divided the venues in which the outbreaks occurred into six categories: homes, transport, food, entertainment, shopping, and miscellaneous. Among the identified outbreaks, 53·8% involved three cases, 26·4% involved four cases, and only 1·6% involved ten or more cases. Home outbreaks were the dominant category (254 of 318 outbreaks; 79·9%), followed by transport (108; 34·0%; note that many outbreaks involved more than one venue category). Most home outbreaks involved three to five cases. We identified only a single outbreak in an outdoor environment, which involved two cases.
Conclusions: All identified outbreaks of three or more cases occurred in an indoor environment, which confirms that sharing indoor space is a major SARS-CoV-2 infection risk.
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.04.20053058v1.full.pdf
The risk in outdoor activity is very small, unless it involves large groups of people in close contact.
I wonder if the stay at home advocates realize what they are saying. The only way to achieve zero risk and return to normal is worldwide herd immunity or 8 billion shots of a safe and 100% effective vaccine.
The FDA has never approved a vaccine for humans that is effective against any member of the coronavirus family, which includes SARS, MERS, and several that cause the common cold.

My post was either partially read, or some people have not been comprehending what I wrote. I never said anything about people who are not retired. I was addressing someone who desperately wanted to play softball. Allow me to articulate more clearly:
I don’t care what you do.
Find an open softball field and play with any friends you can round up. You can accept any consequences that befall you; again, I don’t care.
I will continue to wear a mask while out in public. Just stay away from me or anyone who does not wish to get sick.
Is that more clear?

As the saying goes...you can't fix stupid. Unfortunately your selfish attitude will put others at risk when you shop, or come in contact with others who do not know about your risky behavior. Why do you think you have the right to put others at risk? Are your rights more important than theirs? I don't think so. Grow up and make a few sacrifices for the good of mankind. The world will be a better place if you do...
Yes, yes, yes, and YES!!!!!!

Forgive my ignorance but I have been liberal about the precautions that were dictated. I do respect others and try my best to maintain social distances. It does annoy me at times when I see people scurrying away from those that did not wear a mask even though they were maintaining a social distance. Sorry but if you are that paranoid then you should stay at home and have everything delivered. I do believe that from the very first they should have required masks. Mandating it now seems a little late. My questions is if we all wear masks in public and the numbers go down, what will happens when we take the masks off. I believe wave two will begins and we will be back to square one if no vaccine is available then. So unless we start to begin some minor herd immunity I fear we will be wearing a masks for months until the vaccine is available. How true it is I don't know but they say they have found some medications that do help treat the patient. I do not want to get this and die but I am tired of all the restrictions in place.

okay, I can go along with what you are saying....but let's meet each other half way...let's ask the risk takers to display a large letter "R" on front and back of their shirt so that we know who they are and can practice social distancing from them
Good thought. And you can already tell who has an "R" on their backs because they are the ones NOT wearing masks and gloves.

I prefer to go out and socialize and get on with my life.
This pandemic won't go away until an effective vaccine is developed.
We are ALL going to get exposed to Covid at some time in the future,
and most all of us will survive.
Those who wish to hide at home and minimize their social exposure,
are well within their rights to do so just as those who want to venture
out and get on with life.
Shutting down the economy is the worst thing to happen...

So true.
Ever hear the saying “birds of a feather flock together”?
Evidently the Villages has 2 different flocks and they are really fighting over territory.
Theses are the 3 great lies that are stuck in my head
1) it’s a hoax
2) The risk to the American people is LOW. ( NO ONE says that anymore)
3) only 60,000 people will die but the END of August.

Well written, good logic.

I have been playing golf throughout this stay at home order, but I am trying to do it safely with the least risk. I stay at least 10 feet away from others, use hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes and keep the windscreen up. In grocery stores I wear a mask and try to stay away from others (much harder than the golf course).
We do need to open the economy for those who are unemployed. There is true suffering. And we all need to be personally responsible for our own actions and choices. I am fine with things opening up, but I will choose what I want to participate in and I will wear a mask indoors to protect others. I will not be going to the pools or restaurants for a while. Just my choice on what I am willing to do. I am fine with others wanting to eat out or go to the pools. Be respectful of others and do what you are comfortable doing.

This is an intentionally provocative post. The inclusion of "liberal talking heads" makes it too political to be allowed. I thought there were rules?

There are rules for calling a person childish, stupid, selfish, self centered. Telling them to grow up, etc. All done in this thread so don't get your panties in a wad over "liberal talking heads".

I’m not sure from your question which figure you’re questioning.
The first set was the entire death count for the state during the first 4 mos. of 2019 (I couldn’t get 2020). All deaths of all residents.
Second figure, for comparison, was just COVID19 deaths so far.
Death toll from coronavirus likely understated, data suggesting
These increases belie arguments that the virus is only killing people who would have died anyway from other causes.
By Josh Katz , Denise Lu and Margot Sanger-Katz New York Times
Total deaths in seven states that have been hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic are nearly 50% higher than normal for the five weeks from March 8 through April 11, according to new death statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is 9,000 more deaths than were reported as of April 11 in official counts of deaths from the coronavirus.

Mr "Sage" - you totally don't get it. The very reason we maintain our freedom in this country is because we fight to protect them. That includes what you refer to as "bitching about the Government taking away your rights"

I feel there is a point where our right to choose how we live our own life is violated, and this may be close to that. I'm not saying that I, personally want to do anything different than what's being recommended, but I would like the right to choose. We're allowed to do many things that endanger our lives and the lives of others every day. Do you drive a Car? Ride a motorcycle without a helmet? (allowed by law in FL not in many other states) You're allowed to drink alcohol and even partake of illegal drugs (well, not by law, but we all know you can do it) and THEN get into a car and drive. How many just alcohol related deaths are there every year?.
My point is we're allowed to make these choices when controls could easily be instilled to disallow them. Stop the distribution / use of alcohol. Mandate motorcyclists wear helmets (like other states). Limit manufacture of vehicles that can exceed 45 miles per hour. How many lives would be saved if our government enacted those restrictions?

How is that 'fighting' working for you with seat belts, speed limits and not smoking in public venues? Maybe consider that not wearing a mask - when distancing is not possible - as endangering someone else's health like second-hand smoke does - or maybe you know that's just another 'plot' to inconvenience or control you.

No, Anybody has To right to speed and many people do, many people don’t wear seatbelts, and smokers smoke where they want to. Now if you get caught you have to face the consequences, if you don’t have good lawyer.

More people will die from the lockdown than from covid. Who's selfish? People are not getting cancer treatments, heart surgeries, etc. All surgeries which are not emergency are "elective". Those have all been cancelled. Don't those peoples' lives count for something? Meanwhile, the deaths from covid are less than some previous flu seasons. Try to look at a situation from other people's perspectives.
I'm sorry, but much of what you say is opinion, untrue or at least unproven. I have found nowhere that US deaths from the lockdown will exceed those from the virus. Also, cancer or heart surgeries are not considered elective and are being delayed because medical personnel and/or hospital space is being used for COVID patients. Maybe there have been recent years when the flu has led to more deaths than this virus has so far, but keep in mind that there have been extreme, unprecedented measures taken to limit the spread of COVID-19 and even so, this pandemic is not likely over.
The other thing to bear in mind is that the OP wasn't so much concerned with those suffering from loneliness, depression or lack of income as he was about not being able to take advantage of The Villages amenities.

As people are trying to figure out how to ease back in to a new normal, please remember:
🛑 Some people don’t agree with the state opening.... that’s okay. Be kind.
🏡 Some people are still planning to stay home.... that’s okay. Be kind.
🦠 Some are still scared of getting the virus and a second wave happening....that’s okay. Be kind.
💰 Some are sighing with relief to go back to work knowing they may not lose their business or their homes....that’s okay. Be kind.
👩🏾*⚕️Some are thankful they can finally have a surgery they have put off....that’s okay. Be kind.
📝 Some will be able to attend interviews after weeks without a job....that’s okay. Be kind.
😷 Some will wear masks for weeks....that’s okay. Be kind.
💅🏻 Some people will rush out to get the hair or nails done.... that’s okay. Be kind.
❤️ The point is, everyone has different viewpoints/feelings and that’s okay. Be kind.
We each have a different story. If you need to stay home, stay home. But be kind .
If you need to go out, just respect others when in public and be kind!
Don’t judge fellow humans because you’re not in their story. We all are in different mental states than we were months ago. So remember, be kind.
