That information was all over the news channels. There were groups on FaceBook making the arrangements of where to go. There are opportunists everywhere.

Destruction of property is loathsome. I hope they are caught, convicted, and do jail time in addition to community service. Destruction of historic monuments, NO MATTER HOW OFFENSIVE THEY MAY BE - is even more loathsome. Like it or not, this IS our history. As said by Santayana: "Those who cannot remember our past are doomed to repeat it."
We cannot and should not try to eliminate the symbols of our past. The past doesn't define our present but it is what led us to it, and learning from it is how we can improve upon it.
The statues belong in a museum - whether indoor or an outdoor park somewhere away from where the descendants of history's victims have to see it every day.
That said...
Christopher Columbus was a non-issue, and shouldn't ever have been mentioned in United States history. He had nothing to do with it, he never set foot on (what is now known as) American soil.

No one is trying to change history, nor should anyone be pushing...to destroy these things.
Just take the statues, monuments and memorials of these traitorous losers and put them all together someplace...where the public doesn't have to constantly look at them.
Then teach our children that they tried to destroy the UNITED States of America...which is also of huge importance to our history.
It's not a coincidence, and was the primary impetus, that the majority of these were put up decades after the end of the Civil War as an attempt at intimidation...toward African-American's who were simply asking/pushing for true equality.
The real reason for Confederate statues (click here) (http://www.npr.org/2017/08/20/544266880/confederate-statues-were-built-to-further-a-white-supremacist-future)
Contempt for law enforcement is unacceptable. Sometimes whatever profession people lose their way , and are held accountable that's life.
But for anyone to paint a broad brush on a particular group ( Police ) is nothing more than bias, and ignorance.
Black and White Officers have lost their lives defending law abiding citizens and many yes many have had life threatening injuries.
I have no further comments to make on this subject. It is a complete waste of time commenting on what is the truth.

Columbus (sail here) (http://www.history.com/news/columbus-day-controversy)
I am eighty years old and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. Old Chris gave us a rather nice background feeling living there.... I doubt anyone found this "controversy" that you speak of. I think that is just a way to make excuses for making trouble. I am not buying it.

I certainly didn't make up any "controversy,"... it was explained in the History Channel link.

I have found that the History Channel sometimes just dances with valid facts.........Sometimes the History Channel makes me cry out........"Are you kiddin' me???"
AND Christopher Columbus, and the Civil War and most things that happened more than a hundred years ago are often used as excuses for lack of responsibility for people living today in my opinion. How long can you blame situations that it is unlikely that the people involved are even aware of?
I do not believe that most people are upset about this piece of information about Christopher Columbus that was shared. They know Queen Isabella funded Chris and he and his buds sailed across a previously unknown part of the ocean and discovered America. Does it matter now whether Ponce De Leon was first or whether either were black or white or gay or they did things now considered sexist or racist or politically incorrect or downright stupid? Nope. And whether or not a person knows a lot about history or anything for that matter has more to do with the lucky draw of I.Q. points................but still most of us care about people whether or not they or "ignorant" of history or not, and would like to kick their fanny if they are lazy and steal things. And that goes to people of every color and ethnicity and sexual orientation and wealth level. Take care of yourself and your family so we won't have to and if you can't we will. That is how I see most of this. I am tired of people acting as if their knowing something other people don't know makes them better. It was probably just that some people are above average in I.Q. and others aren't. Bigum Dealum. It isn't a choice.

AND in many cases a little education makes people rant like fools.

:agree:
I've also noticed that in many cases, people prefer to live a life best described as "ignorance is bliss" or "I'm not interested, because it doesn't directly affect me."
And while IQ is not equal among everyone, everyone DOES have the ability to increase their knowledge and understanding of history, science, etc. Particularly in this day and age, when the careful and responsible use of research & utilizing legitimate sources from the internet...can expand our knowledge in ways never previously even imagined.
Being very careful, of course, in not being sucked in due to confirmation bias and by obscure/fake sites masquerading as to being authoritative...but which actually just fits what we want to believe.
Real science and technology, that has made living for everyone around the world much better...is based on this simple premise.
Sometimes however, those new facts result in visceral, knee-jerk reactions, because they fly in the face of what they want to think...or have always thought.
People also shouldn't be fooled, by those who try hiding this adverse reaction with cute, little homespun sayings, if further research/observations reveal an undercurrent of ugly/mean/hateful/vitriolic feelings...toward those different from themselves.
We should ALL want to know facts, the truth, strive for equality, regardless of what we've learned or been taught...to form our own personal bias'.
And yes...we ALL have those bias'.
Because this way, is the only way...to move humanity forward in a positive way.
