So the pipeline was hacked, and guess it has started the hunt for gas before the prices go up.
So going to Disney tomorrow, tank at 1/4. Sams, had 6-7 cars per pump. Every station had line’s of cars waiting to get in. I traveled down to WaWa’s, hoping less of a line. Each car only took less than 5-10 minutes. Lawn guys were the only ones getting more than 5 gallons of gas. Who sits in a line for 15 minutes for a few gallons of gas. It’s the TP mentality all over again.

15 minutes ago I filled up at Chevron. No one but me was at the pumps. Across the street Circle K had their pumps on and no one was waiting there either.

The gas station at the corner of Griffin Rd. and 441 (next to the Lady Lake Post Office) had all pumps shut off with "out of order" bags on the nozzles. But the last time I went there, last week, a guy came out and said power was down on the whole block. Now I'm wondering if the two situations are related. I had no trouble getting gas at Wawa up the road across from the hospital, and the price was the same as it has been all last week.

I was at the CircleK/Shell station on the corner of Belle Cruz and 441 at noon. All the pumps were bagged. Went to the CircleK/Shell on 466 and Southern Trace around 1:00 pm. Busy but it looked like all the pumps were open except one.
This is crazy! Florida is not supplied by this pipeline. It will make it worse that DeSantis declared a State of Emergency for gas. This will really drive the crazies out. Glad I could fill up when I did. Yes, I needed gas today. The car was showing 36 miles to empty when I pulled in.

Yeah, we're creating our own gasoline "shortage" by panic buying. The pipeline shut down does not affect us. I expect the lines to be short-lived once people realize there is no shortage here.

The pipeline goes from Houston to Jersey (5550 some miles) It supplies refineries along the way and for all the eastern seaboard affecting all southern states supplies. if the tankers can't fill up there be no deliveries be that Florida or anywhere else. There is another pipeline of less significance but that would not cope with demand.

Sure if you want to save a nickel you'll always find a line. I went to racetrack and while there were cars there getting gas they were plenty of empty pumps and the price was down seven cents from the day before. If you go to gasbuddy.com they show you locally what people are paying for gas in the last 24 hours. Too many people thinking like retirees and looking to save that last nickel

Went to Sam's yesterday at 9:00 am and drove right to the pump, however, I did notice that several people pulled up, processed the pump, finished and left before I was done pumping, and I pumped 11 gallons. Bet they used more fuel to get back and forth from Sam's than they pumped into their car.

I never let my gas tank get much below half a tank. I’ve done that for almost 50 years. Decades ago, back in the high school days, I filled up the top half of my gas tank. Many fellow students that drove filled up the bottom half of their gas tank, from totally empty, to half full.
The only time I ever ran out of gas was with my first car, which was a piece of junk, a 67 Ford station wagon. It ran out of gas during the test drive, right next to the used car dealer, right in front of a gas station!
I remember decades ago, when the price of gasoline was 26 to 28 cents per gallon. Sometimes there were long lines. I’d fill up at the gas station across the street for 30 cents a gallon. Paying a quarter more to fill up wasn’t a big deal decades ago, to avoid the long gas lines.
For decades, I fill up when my tank gets down to half full. Very frequently these days, I fill up when I get down below 3/4 full, or about 100 to 150 miles on the gas tank. I always zero the trip odometer when filling up, so I know how many miles have been driven since the last fill up.
Last year, during the rioting in the Twin Cities, in Minnesota, I was at the gas station to fill up my half full lawn mower gas can. My car’s gas tank was already nearly full at the time. Another person and I at the gas station discovered that the gas station was closed in the afternoon. There was a sign on the gas station door, that it was closed due to “Social Disorder”, in other words, it was closed due to the threat of rioting. The other person at the gas station had a nearly empty gas tank, and he didn’t know if he had enough gas left to drive to another gas station!
In my view, running your gas tank is irresponsible! You need to keep enough gas in your tank for unexpected emergency situations. It’s not that much of a hassle to wait in line at Costco or Sam’s Club for gasoline, especially if you’re retired, when you have plenty of free time in your life. You can always check emails and surf the web on your cellphone while you’re in line.
Decades ago, many private pilots ended up running out of gasoline and landed on some of the Twin Cities freeways! This happened multiple times, because the pilots did not maintain enough reserve gas supply in their gas tank. The FAA changed the rules, so if a pilot runs out of fuel, and ends up having to land on a road instead of an airport, they lose their pilot’s license forever. After that rule change, small aircraft no longer landed on the roads because they ran out of gasoline! Maybe you should lose your automobile driver’s license for a year if you run out of gas. Then people would be more responsible.
In today’s world, it’s really irresponsible to let your gas tank get too low. There could be a pipeline computer attack, because the pipeline company management is irresponsible, and refuses to spend money on IT security. Or, there could be an unexpected war in the Middle East, or some other unexpected cause for there to be panic, and a “run” on gas stations.
It’s much better if you are property prepared for the unexpected, by always maintaining enough reserve supply of gasoline in your tank.

I remember the Carter years in Maryland when I got up at 5 am to wait in line in my specified day for a hour to get 5 gallons of gas which I needed to get to work. This was in the middle of winter with no heat in the car (couldn't run the car while waiting because I needed every ounce of gas I could get).

Electric cars? Guess what supplies the energy for electricity---it's not all electricity. The power needs something to run it and it isn't the windmills neither. Gas and coal are what run things ultimately. Don't fall for the rhetoric that we're running out of gas. I've heard actual experts say there is plenty and the U.S. has enough without relying on other countries.

Yeah, you could actually buy a trailer and mount a generator on it so you can charge your batteries while you are driving on long trips. The only reason you would need to stop is, wait for it, ........GAS to fuel the generator. Or, you could just drive 300 miles a day and search for a charging station to charge overnight and take about ten days to get to California.

It takes a small fraction of the time to top off my tank than it takes for people to fill their empty tanks.
I topped off my lawn mower gas can so that I can complete the whole lawn mowing job without stopping. I didn’t want to have to drive to the gas station, without completing the mowing.
Also, at the time, the rioting went on for over a week in the Twin Cities. The rioting was causing gasoline stations to close, because the gasoline stations were afraid of the arsonists that were part of the rioting.
There were also reports of cars with the license plates removed, that were filling up gasoline cans at gas stations in the Twin Cities area. Those were probably the arsonists that were part of the rioting.

It's not rhetoric. It's propaganda, conspiracy theories, and flat out lies. Certain extremists are using the Pipeline hack as justification to stir the pot - not just stir it, but add incendiaries and light the brew on fire and watch the explosion.
Not only are we not running out of gas, but we have lots that just can't be moved at the moment because of the pipeline hack. The gas is right there. And they're getting it out to the states it normally gets to, but the process is slower at the moment while they investigate the hack.
Meanwhile, Florida continues to be served exactly as they have been served all along. But idiots in Florida are believing the propaganda and conspiracy nonsense (go ahead, tell me that shocks and surprises you, I dare ya)...and hoarding all the gas they can get. Plastic gas containers are selling out at Lowes and Home Depot.
And just like the toilet paper stupidity, the hoarders will happily sell you their 5-gallon container of gas - for $200.

Is it fabricated?? Just another ploy to get us to change our minds to accept electric transportation? Something's fishy here....Anyway, I went to Wawa near Lowe's on 441 and topped off. Only needed half a tank, but there were lots of cars there but no long lines. I drove up to a pump with no waiting, but man, did it take a long time to put in 9 gallons of gas. I guess with all the pumps running, the flow volume drops considerably.

People have not changed. Panic, to heck with others is sadly normal we see and continue to see it all the time.
According the the news. last night 5/11/21, it is better in Florida than else where.
The,"good old days," I remember the first oil embargo. We lived in an apartment, no option to fill gas cans. I had an air cooled VW the tank is roughly 10 gallons. As I recall the gas stations, directed by government would only sell you on alternate days based on odd or even plates. Oh and they decided you must buy 10 gallons at a time.
May, or may not help. In the past they gave priority to supplying the rest stops on the parkways.
A typical car by design does around 300 miles to the tankful of gas.

yeah, that is correct. Texas wanted deregulation and to control their own destiny so they disconnected from the grid. It took them weeks to fix the problems - My sister in Houston never lost power as she is on a protected grid with a hospital but still got a 2500 charge from the power company as everyone shared in the 'experience'. crazy

What one could conclude is the collusion of the media and too many politicians is to keep Americans afraid any way they can.
Reviewing this morning's map of so called outages...FL..2.8%....NC 4.2%....etc. Dwelling on those "running dry" VS the other 95% that are still operating.
No insight into expectations....only reporting that which will support their agenda.....keeping us afraid and dependent/beholding to government to rescue us.
How about reporting availability status with outages as the exceptions?
Nah....never happen.

That’s not surprising! The incompetent management at many corporations try to cut back, and “save” money by defunding IT security. That’s similar to incompetent politicians defunding the police.
T.J. Maxx foolishly used WEP for their WiFi security, long after WEP could easily be hacked in less than one minute, by a hacker in their parking lot. As a result of the management incompetence and reckless disregard for IT security, thousands of customers credit card information was stolen by the hacker.
If anyone is fired, it probably would be the general IT workers, instead of the incompetent and reckless management, who are responsible for the security breach that could have been easily prevented.

Well, they were warned of the exploit last year by the government cybersecurity people. Someone made the decision NOT to upgrade and/or update.
I am in government computer work right now. I actually did all my updates department wide yesterday. So someone ignored a recommendation.
Microsoft Outlook is now external through OWA - not hosted at the site. It's been over 2 years since those systems were implemented, so my guess is that they may not have updated anything since about 2018.

Or, you could just drive 300 miles a day and search for a charging station to charge overnight and take about ten days to get to California.

A 12 gallon minimum purchase will help end that behavior.
That’s easy to deal with a minimum purchase. Just take a five gallon empty gas can or two with you to the gas station!

So you'd want to ensure that the gas-guzzling pickups and SUVs get plenty of gas, but the people who have compact cars that actually use less gas per mile, just run out (since many of them only have 10 gallon tanks). And that also means no lawnmowers, no tractor-mowers, no golf carts, no gas trimmers, no 2-5-gallon plastic gas containers unless you risk an explosion in your garage by storing 3-5 of them.
I'm thinking more of a 10-gallon MAXIMUM purchase for anyone coming in with a passenger vehicle, golf cart, pickup, with or without a plastic gas container.
Commercial vehicles and RVs can have a 20-gallon maximum.
The object is to use LESS gas, not hoard more.

It is far easier to criticize than to actually make decisions. We regularly see this.
We all do this, I shoulda, coulda, mighta. More important too many say I am perfect, he shoulda, coulda, mighta.
As far a fault, we do not know. Did IT prepare reports and send them to the manager or management team? Updates cost money and upsets the system. It is worth doing?
Easy to see AFTER the system is hacked.
Too many people choose to bide their time and not rock the boat. I was a salesman.
Regular sales meeting. Management says, most scream that is great or say nothing. That is what management wants. Then when you break for lunch, or the meeting is over, the same people screaming how great it is say what the heck are they thinking this is nuts.
Reality.

So it makes sense to cancel any further building of pipelines right? Asking for a friend.

No, the object is NOT to have cars making long lines to get 3 gallons of gas, nor driving around wasting gas going station to station hoping to find some. I remember the Arab oil embargo well. Idiots were following tanker trucks around hoping that they were going TO a delivery and not returning FROM one. There were no cell phones and no internet, so people drove around just looking for a gas station.
If you have a 10 gallon tank, you can bring a 5 gallon (approved) container and fill that as well. Gasoline starts to vaporize at 140F, it's ignition point is 495F. I hope your garage is not that hot!

I’m wondering if everyone had electric vehicles tomorrow how would all that power be generated without burning fossil fuel and once we’re stuck with electric and using it like no tomorrow what is the expected price of a kWh once you have no choice but to plug in.
They won’t fly airplanes on electric in this century and heavy trucks are very limited on mileage on electric

Our local Lowe’s is down 25 people and desperately looking. They tell me as have others that because unemployment benefits have been increased and extended people are staying home and making the same and in many cases more than they were working so why work?
The point you ask? The point being this is just another way to get all the people they can depending on the government.
Open everything should’ve never been closed cut the benefits and get back to work now.

Exactly I do just as you and always have. Well said and true.

This morning my parents were heading north on their trip back home to NY. I couldn’t convince them to stay a few more days until this blows over. I went over to Walmart very early to fill their tank as I didn’t want them to stress about finding gas. While I was waiting, a man in a lawn mowing service truck circled the lot yelling obscenities at everyone as loud as he could. I didn’t see him actually stop to get gas. I guess he just wanted everyone to know how he felt about people getting gas.
A few nights ago, I took my parents to Sumter to listen to music. My Dad is in his 90s and takes pride in still using his walker, but his mobility is very limited. So, I pulled up as close to the curb as I could, dashed out and got his walker. It took me about 30 seconds to get him from the car to the sidewalk. As I did so, a female driver screamed an obscenity at me and told me to find a handicapped spot (if only there were any).
In both incidents, the drivers felt emboldened to scream their foul mouthed objections. They chose to judge and then use inflammatory words. I’m not sure as a society how we have degraded and simply lost compassion for each other. It’s quite sad really and it makes me think a lot about my parents who struggle everyday, thankful to wake up and see the sun shine. It gives me reason to pause and reflect on how I can be more aware of those around me that might be struggling and simply take a breath and let them be or help them if needed.
Folks, this temporary gas shortage is just that, temporary. Let’s take some time today to accentuate the positive. Shut off your TVs for a few days and get off Facebook. Take a walk, get on your bike, go swim in the pool, or just read a good book. Decompress. Be patient with the elderly. We have so many here that need our patience, understanding and compassion. Give them time to get gas, cross the street or safely drive their car. One day, you will be that person. Life is too short to be mean. It takes up too much energy.

I give you a lot of credit for being willing to admit that you made a purchase that you regretted hopefully you didn’t get hurt to bad getting out of it I suspect not as people are clamoring for these electric bombs.
I wish more people would own up to it and help the rest of the buying public to make a better buying decision.
They just raised the prices again across the board at Tesla and they’re still bleeding money as every vehicle sold is at a loss as many electric vehicles are for the other manufactures.
When I worked for FCA Fiat Chrysler Automobiles the manufactures had to make a certain percentage of their production electric and they were subsidized by the federal government to do it and still couldn’t break even selling them.
Our CEO Sergio Marchione (rest in peace) at the time when asked about the slow sales of our electric offering said this.
I hope I never sell another one they didn’t promote sales as the advertising would’ve only added to the losses.
He said that the corporation lost between $500.00 and $750.00 on each vehicle at that time which was 7 years ago.
Tesla doesn’t want to build cars he builds them to show the battery capacity of his batteries in hopes to be the automotive industries largest OEM battery supplier.
Batteries and rockets is his business not cars.

Electric cars? Guess what supplies the energy for electricity---it's not all electricity. The power needs something to run it and it isn't the windmills neither. I love this post and all it stands for. Thank you for having the guts to post it. The world needs more people like you.
And just like the toilet paper stupidity, the hoarders will happily sell you their 5-gallon container of gas - for $200.

yeah, that is correct. Texas wanted deregulation and to control their own destiny so they disconnected from the grid. Pipeline is suppose to be back on line by this weekend.
It's already up, as of earlier today. Thanks to all the hoarding though, millions of people who would normally only get gas when they were running low, ran low, and now can't get any gas. There will be people who can't get to work, along the east coast, because they depend on their cars. There will be Uber drivers who might have given those workers a ride, except THEY're out of gas too.
Landscape companies who rely on gasoline to power their equipment, might have to tell a few of their customers "sorry - no gas, can't mow your lawn this week."
This is mostly because of hoarders. Especially in Florida.

Microsoft Exchange was very vulnerable to hackers, and the company refused to upgrade the email program. This was probably the management of the company that made the totally reckless decision to not upgrade the email software, probably to save money.
I heard that the company paid the ransom. I also heard that the Federal government said that it’s a private company, and that they could pay the ransom if they wanted to do that.
So, it appears that there’s no consequences to the management of the company. The Federal government seems like it’s not interested in going after the bad actors.
But from the perspective of someone that has only a quarter of a gas tank less, that’s going to run empty soon, why can’t you wait a few minutes longer in line?
You wait in line at the Tax Collector’s Office, you wait in line to check out at stores, you wait in line to exit Costco and Sam’s Club stores. If you’re going to a Disney park, most of the time there, you’re waiting in lines. Just read the email or surf the web with your cellphone while you’re waiting in the line at the gas station. If you’re retired, you have plenty of extra time to wait in lines!

You have gone the other way in giving fake news. SOUTHERN FLORIDA is not dependent on that pipeline at all. so the true story is that the problems we are suffering here in The Villages is being artificially created by the media and fearmongers.
I thought The Villages was in central Florida.

Fracking is what allowed old reservoirs become profitable but now than has been banned.
Fracking is not banned everywhere.
Some states have banned it, but the majority have not..
Fracking is not banned in Florida, for instance, but once in awhile someone tries...

Good news, when I head north I will be bringing 20 gallons of ethanol-free gas with me. Not hoarding, just because you can't buy ethanol-free gas in Massachusetts and I am sick of cleaning out carburetors that have been gummed up with ethanol in my chain saws, leaf blowers, weed wacker, and generator. I will never figure out why millions of people are starving in this world and our idiotic government determined that we need to add corn based ethanol to our gas. Go figure?
Good Lord! You are a fire bomb on wheels. Please drive carefully, you do not want to be in an accident, or rear-ended by another vehicle. Clean the carburetors, it's safer!!

I thought you explained yourself rather well the first time.

I just buy it by the case at Wal Mart. I go through maybe 2 cans in 3 months. That's like $16 and no hassle taking gas with me....

FYI instead of being a moving gas bomb all the way to mass , it’s much easier to just go to any gas station or marina and fill up all your small engines or boats , and if you can’t find done and you don’t believe that ( goggle is your friend) your welcome to come over to my marina in east Boston and fill up

We live in the Berkshires, Boston is a 270 round trip drive for us. I have checked every place within about 40 miles of us that supposedly sells ethanol free gas and no one has it at a pump except for a small airport in Northampton, but you can only buy gas from them if you rent a hanger for your plane. All other places only sell the gas in small containers at a ridiculous price. You can buy tru fuel, which is Ethanol free at Walmart, Tractor Supply, etc... for $24 for a 110 OZ. can versus about $3 for 128 Oz. at WaWa in Florida. I will risk driving the gas up north in the bed of my pickup truck. I wouldn’t do it inside a car.
My neighbor up north is setting up an old oil tank in his barn with a drainage valve on the bottom of the tank. The plan is to fill the tank about 90% with gas (containing ethanol) and then top off the tank with water. Ethanol bonds with water and both are heavier than gas and will sink to the bottom of the tank. Open the valve and slowly drain out the water/ethanol until pure gas drains out and shut the valve. The tank now contains ethanol free gas.

That seems like a lot of effort for a weed-eater or blower.

I was at Sam's today...no lines, pulled right up to the pump and got what I needed...$2.629 per gallon.

I am going on a trip north this weekend - first vacation in over a year - and am a little concerned about getting gas along the way (I-95). I was on the internet this morning and as usual, a search will provide many useless pieces of information.
HOWEVER, I did see that there is an free app for your phone called "gasbuddy". You can put in your location and it will provide a list of gas stations nearby and indicate if that station has gas or not (plus a few other things like price and diesel). It appears to be user updated as is the Waze app - i.e. relies on people using it to update it.
I played with it putting in locations like Jacksonville that are along my route to see what was shown for gas stations. It has a map function where you can scroll the map (like google) and see the gas stations (plus some other things). You can click on the station and it will tell you about it.
I've not used it yet but it looked interesting and useful.

try gasbuddy tracker rather than gasbuddy.
gasbuddy is pricing, tracker is availability.

We went down to Ft Myers yesterday. Once there, we noticed that there was no gas to be found at the stations we went past. Luckily, we were able to get down there and back without having to refuel.

They top off every time they leave the house....creating lines for no reason and distorting real demand/need.

Map is wrong.
Florida fuel comes from coast.
It's all over the news............fake news map.
The pipeline only affects the panhandle. You are correct with the rest of Florida receiving their fuel from the coast.

You can get gas for the golf cart at the Villages Golf Cars. Also the Wawa on 441 near Walmart and Aldi's has ethanol-free gas and 93 octane gas. They're all out of everything else.
Electric golf cart. That's why I said that my golf cart would see some mileage put on it. But, thanks.

no.or maybe yes. My hubs was planning to drive to New Orleans late Thurs afternoon, BUT, we were told late Wed, that TLH, PNS, and MOB were all already low on gas. Now, you really don't know that you can trust main stream media or any other of the goof balls , SO, we just decided to make it easy on us, and we booked him an airline ticket, hotel with free pick up, uber to pick him up and take him to pick up the family car to use for the weekend. It may be uber, or a family member that takes him back to his airport hotel that will provide the shuttle to get him back to the airport tomorrow. So all we had to worry about was enough gas to get him to MCO and back, from his flight
