Call White Glove Movers in Bayonne NJ. 201-6531511. We used them to move here from NJ and my daughter has used them numerous times. Very professional and have never had anything broken.

I can recommend you go have a nice meal and cocktail at Maison Premiere in Williamsburg before you leave. :) Sorry, I can’t help with movers.

We used United vans lines years ago, and specified NO TRANSFER station, when you do this the truck that gets loaded is the same truck and crew to load and unload. This was expensive but there was nothing lost and very little damage.

I can't think of anything that I would ever own that would be worth paying someone to move a thousand miles.

My suggestion is to bring as little as possible except for some short sleeves and shorts and underwear and sandals. Plenty of cheap dining room sets and the thrift shops and all you really need is a couple of TVs and the new living roomset possibly

Bekins.

My wife and I moved here in January from N.Y. and everything was handled professionally. Can't give you price comparisons as we were more interested in having the job done right, and on schedule. No complaints on either end, including having the movers take furniture and other materials from our apartment as well as from our storage facility a mile away. I was totally satisfied.

We used Allied. Mover gives job to a driver.

Driver got two guys from DC to drive 250 miles to load our stuff. Did great.

Gets to Villages and he hires to guys from Tampa to unload.

Unbeknownst to us those guys broke stuff and than hid the breakage and we didnt even realize what happened to over a week later.

We were too busy to file a report with Allied so we lost several hundred dollars worth of stuff.

To make a long story short you need to watch the unloading like a hawk.

My son recently moved from northern CA to Montgomery Alabama - what a mess. His initial estimate was $10k. He did not know the company he was hiring was a "broker" and outsourced his shipment to three different companies. The costs increased from 10K to 30K. I kid you not. Why I say this is to be very careful as to whom you hire. Make sure they are picking it up and delivering it to your home. Not additional sub carriers. There have been numerous complaints against these moving brokers who don't even own trucks. I'm using a U-Haul and moving my stuff down in NOV.

Hello,

I am from LI.

Nowadays, the hard part is just scheduling a mover.
In march of last year it was a bit dodgey.
Now with further COVID stupidity, who knows.
Also expect to pay a lot more for a move down as compared to going back up.
Great time to leave NY, horrible time to move.

PM me as I am looking to sell in the next months if you have not purchased already.

When I moved in 2019, I used the Relocation Services offered by The Villages. Three movers come to your home and provide you with an estimate for the move -- you select the mover that best meets your needs. I had the movers pack the dishes and other breakable items. The move went extremely well -- all the furniture arrived without any damage and all the dishes and other items that they packed arrived safely -- not one item was broken. There is no cost to you to use the service. The Relocation Service is listed on The Villages website.

Good luck with your move -- Welcome to The Villages!

I hate to bad mouth a business, but........
I used Atlas to move from central NY

I hope my little slide show file comes through, it may not, so suffice it to say it was bad.

After packing half the "stuff" myself, I had emergency surgery and the moving company had to finish. They screwed up royally, despite explicit instructions. After 4 days of packing they gave me 34 sheets of paper to sign at the last minute that listed 1,296 items. Sadly, I signed it without looking. Imagine my surprise when damaged items appeared in Florida, and they told me it "was like that". I looked at those 34 pages and lo and behold, ALL 1,296 items were marked as "damaged" on ALL 6 sides. They must have thought I was living in a junk shop. To their surprise, 1,288 of the 1,296 items had absolutely NO DAMAGE. I invited them to speculate as to whether their piece of paper would stand up in court despite my signature. Naturally, they declined:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl: and fixed what they could.

Just some food for thought. I know of some northern residents who paid lots of money to move all their stuff here and once it got here they hated the way it looked in their new Florida home. Just looked dated and oddly out of place.

Maybe your stuff us beautiful and has lots of sentimental value, but also consider a complete do-over with a whole new lighter fresher style for your new Florida home.

Just think about it. It might be a better choice to avoid the cost and aggravation of hiring a mover.

Everyone wants their stuff from up there brought down here . Then you find it doesn’t fit and no storage to speak of. So, you give it away to Goodwill, the charity stores, or consignment places for almost nothing. And you’ll pay a fortune to ship it here. Get rid of most of your clothes, give to the family all the stuff you say they will get one day, sell the furniture with the house or apartment, buy new here. Check out PODS, (metal shipping containers) for what ever is left.

I disagree with those who say you only need shorts and summer clothes down here. In the winter days in the 40s are common so you still need some long pants, sweaters and winter coat, hat, gloves, etc. Not a lot I admit but don’t get rid of all your winter stuff unless you want to buy all new.

The first winter after we moved here full-time it was particularly chilly (to me, anyway). One day I was walking into McD wearing jeans, Uggs, long-sleeve t-shirt, flannel shirt, quilted sleeveless vest, and a knit scarf. A woman was pulling out of the drive-thru with her window still open, she looks at me and says, "Where do you think you are, in Minnesota??" But hey, I was cold! So, yeah, maybe don't give away all the heavy clothes until you see how you adjust to Florida weather. :)

Moving to the villages from Brooklyn...looking for recommendations on a good mover.

A rude shock to many, Brooklyn is on Long Island. We moved nine years ago from Nassau County. A good mover? There are perhaps more complaints about movers than cable companies, insurance companies etc etc etc.

My sister used to work for one one of the larger interstate movers and I followed her advice.

What will happen. You will decide to get two or three competing bids. The company will send over a SALESPERSON. They will look over your STUFF put it into their computer and give you an ESTIMATE. Their program shows average weight, ie couch weighs ?? 100 pounds. THE GOCHA, if they underestimate the weight of your STUFF, their BID will be lower. However, when you drive on highways you will see exits marked weigh station.
They must stop and have their truck weighed. So if they underestimate your weight for your quote, when they arrive they will say you owe $$$$$ more than the quote.

What you want to compare is tariff rate. They will not tell you what it is. It is easy to figure out. The estimate will show weight as well as price. The tariff rate is filed with the government. I would expect they are again or still charging a fuel surcharge. You don't need to care what they call it. It is how much per 100 pounds.

Insurance- They do include insurance but it is like ten cents per hundred pounds. I used 100 pounds for a couch. If they destroy your couch you will get ten cents for it. You can, and I did pay for insurance to cover replacement value. I'm not sure but I seem to recall that cost like $600. It was well worth the money. I think that cost also varies by the mover you choose. Your stuff will not be the only stuff on an interstate moving trailer.
You will not be on the truck to see that they properly secure all that is on the truck each time they load or unload. Why it was worth the money. I had a lot of heavy equipment.
My work table, really heavy was not secured. In Florida we were the last stop. Something, I assume my worktable or???? shifted and destroyed my desk. They destroyed almost twice what we paid for insurance. It was tough, it was a battle but I did collect.

The last GOTCHA. As stated, I had a lot of heavy stuff. The sales people are well very slick. I was told his program would not properly estimate my heavy stuff so he would add in an extra 1,000 pounds and I would get it back in the end. The gotcha, my tariff rate as I figured it was fifty-seven cents per 100 pounds so extra charge $570. The fine print is they credit you thirteen cents per hundred pounds.

Three competing movers? Mayflower and United Van Lines are owned by the same corporation.

We use only company people. That does not mean they are qualified or that you will have the same people on both ends. I have a large armoir. Like say a china closet, it comes apart by removing a few screws. The crew loading the truck tried to carry it down the stairs as one piece damaging both the furniture and the newly painted walls, handrails etc. Almost funny -NOW. The Florida crew, dropped that same piece of furniture poking a hole in our brand new bedroom wall.

Packing, you want to photograph everything in each box and how it is packed. Any damages, you can be sure they will claim it was already damaged or improperly packed.
The mover will deliver the boxes, for us 250 boxes, and ask you to sign a receipt-a bill of lading. You will not be able to count the boxes, they will not be in numerical order and in our case damaged boxes were put under other boxes or against a wall. If you sign you cannot claim a box was missing.

Read my post. Interstate moves are by weight. Reason why you will see signs for weigh stations. They must get off and have the truck weighed. If, anyone will give you a binding estimate, they will over estimate the weight for the quote. As I discovered. Mayflower and United Van lines are owned by the same umbrella corporation. The business structure is sort of like a franchise. You talk to what you think is Mayflower. It can be a privately owned business that pays a franchise fee to use the advertised Mayflower name. They of course police the local guy so he does not damage the valuable name.

We had over a year to plan. What to take and not to take, as i posted elsewhere I calculated the cost at fifty-seven cents 100 lbs. I sold a lot of stuff in garage sales and ebay. I had lead, I had copper, I had brass. Wife screamed just toss it. I loaded it into my car, took it to a place that buys scrap and handed her over $300 in cash. To take or not to take, that is a question. I took stuff that I have not used in 10 years. I left behind stuff some sold, some trashed that you simply can't buy. Example I had cuban mahogany. It is far different than the luan sold for outrageous prices-it is mahogany in common name only. i still regret, I gave it to a former neighbor. A snow blower? Should it snow where will you find one? No I didn't take mine either. I did take an ice scraper.
Great for digging love bugs off your windshield.

Re: Staten Island
Staten Island was a garbage dump for New York City. Perhaps like the villages, pre GPS
you would use a map. You would plot your route but it didn't tell you it is a one way street. The streets perhaps like the villages, lets put a street there. The do have a nice zoo. A friend said the water is so polluted it would eat into his boat. The tolls on the verizano bridge? I think residents get a discount.

I inherited a 50x100 lot on Staten Island. Rumor was my great aunt got it as a promotion for a magazine subscription. Florida? Much of it was under water, literally.

Check the fine print on the insurance. I used a company that self insures. So basically, the company self investigates any claims. Interviews the crew chief of the truck and then gives you a really low ball offer on any damages. This was not a good experience. The is the best advice I can give you.

SusanStCatherine
10-12-2021, 08:44 AM
You can't trust recommendations or reviews for movers. We did that. One bad (new?) guy on crew damaged most of our furniture. Go with big reputable company in my opinion. Get full replacement cost insurance with $0 deductible. Our move was almost $7k. After my significant claim effort, they wound up paying over $8k in damages. So in other words, they paid us $1600 to move us and damage most of our furniture. Take your own photos before move and make the delivery people stay as long as it takes for you to inspect everything or get them to sign that they wouldn't stay that long. Good luck!

I would not trust any long distance mover ever again. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and consign, donate or have estate sale, retaining only things of personal Value. Carry personal, financial, jewelry, irreplaceables in your car with You. Then BUY ALL NEW HERE ! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH UNITED, SUDDATH, MAYFLOWER.
I moved here in 2018 from Maryland, contracted with UNITED-SUDDATH, Who packed my stuff. Surprisingly a third entity “MAYFLOWER Van” appeared on moving day to carry my goods in a carrier large enough for Mine +2 other households. It cost me $9,900 and I had $56,000 of insurance for breakage and loss. THEY ARRIVED 5 DAYS LATE AFTER DELIVERING 2 other households.
A LOT WAS MISSING, LOST OR STOLEN. I had to file claims and wasted a year of my life fighting with UNITED, SUDDATH AND MAYFLOWER ( 3 entities) I ONLY GOT LOUSY $2,000 CHECK for all of the theft, loss and damage ! They broke, kept, or stole some expensive, sentimental or irreplaceable items. They WRAPPED AND SHIPPED BOXES OF DISCARDS We’d marked TRASH. NECESSITIES MY FAMILY PACKED, WRAPPED AND TAPED SHUT, LABELED WERE MISSING. I wasted a year writing, photocopying, sending photos, and making claims—ALL FOR NAUGHT.
