Good for Ocala PD. Some people should not own guns, like the Villager that had an altercation with another Villager, chased him down on his motorcycle, pulled his gun out and aimed it at the chest of another Villager a year ago. That case is still open and the Sumter County judge could let him walk with minimal punishment and a plea of not guilty thus enabling him to KEEP his gun... the police are only one factor.

Few peple should have handguns, no civilians should have assault weapons. We are a disgrace to the civilized world in the number of shootings and killings in this country every day. (Not to mention the number of people killed by guns every year). And we are on a "travel watch" from multiple counries because of it. When u realize that countries like Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and so many others have strict gun control laws and almost no mass shootings, and FAR fewer shootings overall, it makes you wonder if gun crazy Americans just cant stop playing at being cowboys and tough guys. And the "guns dont kill people, people do",. is both true, and BS. Absent free access to guns, there would be no mass hostage, shooting, rampaging, etc and far fewer deaths can happen by knifing or whatever. And weapons meant to kill people shouldnt be traded like playing cards at shows. It is just an unnecessary part of living, and dying. (Ranching, farming, rural life, single shot rifles, etc aside).

Well, I guess some of what you say may be true. But please keep in mind that when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Add to that, if crazies cannot obtain a gun, they can still have mass murders by running a vehicle into a crowd, making home made bombs, etc., etc. Sorry, gun control in this country will work as well as alcohol prohibition, drug control, (Hell, we can't even keep drugs out of prisons!), etc., etc.

No oh gesture. I believe in the 4th amendment. But common sense says that we need to make a national database so if anybody wants to buy a weapon they can check there to see if he’s got a felony record assault record or was committed for a 72 hour hold at a psych ward as they have to sign a piece of paper that says they will not purchase our own a gun. how hard is that to do why is there so much fight over that

Because we are protected by the second amendment and the Bill of Rights from such intrusion.

You have more than enough laws on the books, start enforcing them and stop making plea deals.

That is because "Chicago" encompasses a huge geographic area and population. Some of which is quite safe. But as a city, in general, they are among the top in the country in the sheer number of shootings...

For example, North Chicago is relatively safe, but Central and South Chicago are quite dangerous...

I have to laugh at some folks that think assault rifles are a problem. Very few citizens own assault rifles and those that do have a rigorous background check, stiff regulations and an expensive Federal Stamp. My single shot hunting rifle has decorations that make it look scary, so that poster wants to ban it because it may look like a scary assault rifle? By the way, countries with stiff firearm regulations aren’t immune to murder.

Good for them!

I'm strongly pro - 2nd Amendment but there needs to be better policing, such as this example. I don't know how Florida law works but back in Minnesota, particularly in Minneapolis, the powers of the police have been reduced to such an extent that what happened in Ocala could never happen in Minneapolis, even though it should. Random checks have pretty much ceased up there: the police must have reasonable cause for stopping you and just the fact that you may be carrying a gun is not enough cause. Even in known gang neighborhoods, this does not happen.

That's one of the big problems today. We have enough--far too many, actually--laws governing gun ownership. But we're not enforcing them. Not allowing police to make random stops in known heavy gang areas is just one example of this.

Great to get guns away from criminals!
But, what about the criminals themselves?
Guns just do shot be themselves.
It takes someone to point and shoot a gun.
So again, what has been done to the criminals?

We've all heard that tired argument from the NRA. That is like saying "laws are pointless because criminals break them". Or "all drugs should be legal because addicts will get them anyways." Number one, guns will never be outlawed, Congress is not going to repeal the second amendment. No one wants to outlaw guns but the aim is to make gun laws less liberal so that those who should not have guns will have a more difficult time obtaining them. Given this, law enforcement and qualified law-abiding individuals would possess guns, and not only outlaws. We need to have common sense restrictions on those who can obtain or use firearms. Over time, it would be more difficult for criminals to obtain guns. If there are less guns in circulation, then there will be fewer guns in the hands of criminals.

I was reading interesting statistics about gun control in the UK. Ownership of guns for sport is acceptable and tightly regulated, but other than that, the UK has the strictest gun control legislation anywhere in the world. As a result, their rate of firearm homicide is 0.05 per 100,000 people. The rate in the US is 5.9.

Can you explain the process for purchasing a firearm so I can understand how it is so liberal?

Are you aware that a convicted felon cannot legally purchase or possess a firearm? So where do they get them? They steal them or buy them from other criminals who specialize in supplying stolen firearms or firearms purchased by a "straw purchaser" which is also illegal. Look up the definition of a straw purchaser, I don't want to write a book to explain it. The prosecution of a straw purchasers almost never happens so there is no deterrent to do the crime.

No where in this country and most of the world can you legally purchase or use heroin, cocaine, meth and so on, but there is a multi billion dollar business in supplying them illegally. Making guns harder to get or even a ban will only create another billion dollar criminal enterprise trafficking illegal firearms. So how well have the drug laws worked so far???
