View Full Version : Looking for a church

Dr Winston O Boogie jr

I want to start attending church again. I was brought up in the Catholic Church but left and went to a protestant church later in life.

I don't want to go back to a Catholic Church and the church that I belonged to was a bit too conservative for me. I'm not looking for an ultra liberal, "you can believe in anything" kind of church but something that's a bit more moderate.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

There are a lot of churches in the area. Check more than a few out. Also, you may want to explore outside TV a little.

My wife and I go to the 9:00 services at New Covenant United Methodist Church at 3470 Woodridge Dr off of 466. They also have services at 11:00. We have a great pastor who preaches from the Bible. We also have an excellent music program of which I think you'd be impressed.

We moved in almost 5yrs ago. We went to Live Oaks Community Church on our second Sunday and didn't have to look no further.
A Gospel (Jesus) teaching church , blessed with 5 teaching pastors.
Great worship music.
We are also blessed with a growing congregation that want more of Jesusin their lives.
Come and visit tomorrow Sunday at 8;30 am or 10;30am at our Woodbridge campus or Today Saturday at 5;30 pm or tomorrow at 10;30am at our Southern Oaks Campus.
We have built the two campuses for the people that we do not know yet.

You can access the Woodbridge campus by golf cart --drive thru the Walmart parking lot on 466

I’ll be buying in TV very soon, and unfortunately found no church inside the bubble like the one I’m leaving behind. I don’t want to talk politics/religion here, but none in TV meant my doctrinal standards, as many, though well-intentioned, focused more on the community over making Christ and sharing the gospel to a lost world front- and-center. I did find an excellent church in Winter Garden that I’ll be attending, and I don’t mind making the quick drive down south once a week, since I’ll be buying new in the southern villages of TV.

Second that...we've been attending at the Woodridge campus of Live Oaks for about a year now.

Their affiliation is Evangelical Free. But they don't seem to be hung up on doctrinal issues; they tolerate a certain variety of viewpoints and treat guests as members (though the guests can't vote on church-related business). Come this Sunday: Pastor James Armstrong, a new associate pastor, ex-Air Force Colonel with impressive curriculum vitae, will be delivering the sermon and he's a great speaker.

I too was brought up Catholic. I now happily attend worship services at Trinity Lutheran church, located just outside the villages on Rt.441. I believe the Lutheran religion is closest to Catholicism, without the private confession, and is more liberal along with having a "clean" reputation.

st pauls rc in leesburg is an interesting church. Great parking, and modern church. Has young pastor and whay i like most is the singing children and the baptisms that take place during the ceremony. There is also the vow renewal ceremonies and a police presence within . I like seeing families, sometimes with up to 10- 15 members coming in at all ages to mass together. Seeing their love of each other inspires me to have hope for a world with a brighter future.

We go to St. George Episcopal Church across from St. Timothy. The service is similar to the catholic church; therefore, you would probably feel comfortable. We love our church and hope you will come visit.

I hear ya, Dr. Boogie,

You might like the Episcopal denomination. It has been called “Catholic Light” or “Diet Catholic” — and it is sometimes kiddingly said, “With the Episcopal church, you get all of the pageantry but none of the guilt.” (An Episcopal service is very much like a Catholic service….but not quite.)

In the Episcopal church, there are two sacraments instead of seven like the Catholic Church. The two sacraments are Baptism and the Eucharist. (Most Prostestant churches have two sacraments instead of seven.)

Episcopal priests can marry and women can be ordained as priests. But even though it is not considered a sacrament, Episcopal priests do the Anointing of the Sick.

A good Episcopal priest will keep politics from tearing apart a congregation — as all clergy should……..but I know how it goes sometimes……..with some churches that let politics wreck things……

(and, as an aside comment, I know there are some churches throughout the country with leaders that have become so focused on politics that I think they should lose their tax-exempt status.)

But…..I digress — back to topic now…….

Also, the Episcopal church does not try to dictate from the pulpit who consenting adults should love.

The Lutheran Church has 3 different synods that I know of: ELCA, Missouri Synod, and Wisconsin Synod. (I am pretty sure there are more. But I know these 3 are represented in or near TV.)

Of those 3 Synods, the Missouri Synod and the Wisconsin Synod are considered conservative. Those two synods do not ordain women and, unless things have changed, they practice closed communion……

But the ELCA ordains women and invites all Christians to their communion. Hope Lutheran in TV is ELCA.

The United Church of Christ, which is just outside TV, is another church you might try.

I don’t know much about Methodist doctrine, but the big Methodist church in TV seems to be very active and does a lot of good outreach to help people in the area. (I guess they still do. When we bought new appliances in 2014, we gave the old ones (they worked) - to the Methodists who came to pick them up for a project they were doing to assist people with housing,)

Anyway, I wish you well…..and I understand your journey……because I have been there.

TV has so many choices of churches that you should be able to find something that works for you.

Oxford Assembly of God is a great church. I would like to personally invite you to attend. Not too conservative, not too liberal. They focus on family, children’s programs and missions. Pastor Strickland has been there for over 30 years and is excellent. Everyone there is very warm and friendly. It’s just North of the Wawa on 301 & 466. I look forward to seeing you there.

I was raised in the Catholic Church. I became inactive in attending Church until 29 years ago when I was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I joined the Church 29 years ago this November. Having Jesus Christ in the center of my life has brought me true peace and joy even in the agony of painful trials. If you would like to know more please let me know. I would be happy to speak with you about my experience. We meet in a Chapel in Sumterville off of 301. The address is 2330 Co Rd 528, Sumterville, FL. We meet on Sundays from 10am to Noon.

I too grew up in the Catholic Church (grade school, high school and college). I started exploring other churches 10 years ago while still up North. Once I moved down here, I tried a few churches but eventually found one I feel like "home". I participate in the 9:30 contemporary service. I've been going here since 2019.

975 Rolling Acres Road in Lady Lake, FL
