Hubby captured this shot last night, while walking our dog. Think it was a quicker walk home, than the walk up the street :agree:

OUCH. The tunnel cloud looks serious. I know we live close to each other. I haven't heard anything from neighbors so I assume the funnel fizzled.

That's quite a shot, yet one I'd rather not be in a position to take.

Beware Dan. If that tornado takes down my house, yours is going with me. We only live three houses apart.

Something I'll never forget was when I was growing up in St. Petersburg in the 60's one afternoon I was looking out at Tampa Bay and counted 7 funnel clouds at one time.
A few years later in the 70's when I was working in the control tower at St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport I watched a funnel cloud completely circle the airport where the land meets the bay. Didn't do any damage but was a scary few moments.

I saw that yesterday also but by the time I got home it had broken up!

LOL, yeah, hubby said the funnel fizzled quite quickly, but he saw it form over Bonita course. I was busy clicking away with my camera in the opposite direction and got a pink night sky instead.

Good grief! We were in our new house on Graves Place in April when we heard that our neighborhood in Wisconsin was hit by a tornado. NOW we hear about a funnel cloud in our Buttonwood neighborhood while we're in our house in Wisconsin. Hope it didn't touch down.

Sandra. You are more that a picture taker. YOU are an artist with a camera.
Not sure if that's the same cloud. I turned on my computer last early evening and there was an article and a picture telling about a funnel cloud seen in the Lady Lake-Leesburg area.
That particular cloud was short lived, also. Guess weather conditions are just right for that sort of formation. Luckily, it did not touch down. Sort of takes you by surprise, doesn't it!

We had a good view of it from Tamarind Grove. It grew fatter, but pretty much stayed in the same spot, then went into a backwards "J" formation (lateral) before disappearing from view behind grey fog.
Been through a few tornados as a kid (they used to come through the south side of Chicago back then) but never saw a funnel cloud just frozen in the sky like that. I thought that was unusual... and was going to ask if you had ever seen this here before!

I was coming back from the dog parkwith Bonyta so I'd guess around 5p.m give or take a half hour.I've never seen a funnel cloud before and thought it was weird that it was high in the sky with the tail a long way from the ground!

Yea, I was on the golf course (Tarpon Boil) and it was really very high in the sky and did not look threatening. We just kept on playing.

We were driving home when we saw it and it wasn't a funnel cloud. They called it a land spout since there really wasn't any rotation. Scared me for sure when I saw it.

A landspout does indeed have rotation: (From Wiki) Like waterspouts, they are also technically considered tornadoes since they are defined by an intensely rotating column of air in contact with both the surface and a cumuliform cloud. Not all landspouts are visible, and many are first sighted as debris swirling at the surface before eventually filling in with condensation and dust.
The difference is that landspouts are not associated with a Mesocylone. Not exactly sure what this was but in the end it was harmless.

I am glad I posted our photos of the clouds and funnel. Who knew such small things would provide so much pleasure and invite such a variety of comments.
Thank you, gracious Gracie, always so prompt with a kind word or two, and I appreciate your compliment regarding my fun with the camera.
Ain't the Villages the best place in the world to be? (of course, that IS a rhetorical questions)... :bigbow:

I saw the funnel cloud and really thought I was seeing things. I finally decided it couldn't be what I thought it was (if it was, then I should be finding a tunnel to hide in since I was in my golf cart) and was just a weird-shaped cloud (kinda looked like an elephant's trunk). Had I known that my first thought was correct, I would have been terrified.
BTW -- Both were great shots of Florida's wondrous clouds.

Not sure what it was but it initially scared me. My hubs was at the Square and I called him. He said they were watching it from there but no one seemed concerned. I turned on the local weather and not one mention of it. My weather radio also didn't go off. So, I took a pic from my lanai and watched it disappear.

Friday's storm had some strong winds. It knocked the two lights clean off the garage! Unfortunately, the roof is still intact, so it looks like I am still on the hook paying for a new one!
