I will be moving to the villages with my wife in 2 years time. This is a really tough choice since we are already established in the state we live in with good careers. Im moving to be closer to my mother taking over her 3 bedroom house and getting her a villa. Economically this is a wonderful oppertunity. The question I have though is will we be accepted within a community being younger. Ive visited the villages numerous times and love the area Im just not sure how we will be accepted in the community. Hope to be able to find work which I dont think will be a problem as our fields are very versitle. I have heard storys that pay in florida is low though. I guess im just nervous thta moving to the village smight hinder us due to our age being younger.

My wife and I recently moved to TV for the same reason; my mother-in-law is getting older and we wanted to be closer in order to help her. We are also younger (forties) but have not encountered any problems here due to our age. In fact, we have been welcomed by everyone we have met. There are still a ton of activities to get involved with (regardless of age) and you can do as little (or as much) as you like.

The job situation can be difficult. Outside of TV it is fairly rural and there is not much opportunity. My wife is an RN so it was relatively easy for her to find work at the hospital here in TV. As a teacher, it has been much harder for me to find work, as Florida is cutting way back on educational spending.

Welcome to TOTV!
Your age won't bother us if it won't bother you! We don't think about age here, we just think about how to gratefully enjoy our paradise.

But, just so you know, I've met plenty of residents who are not yet eligible for Medicare.

Welcome to you! I am old enough to be your...older sister! We met two couples back in July at Red Sauce, both were in their early 40's and lived in TV. Age is just a state of mind. TV is like no other place!

I hope to be able to get in with the cable company, its what i have been doing for the past 12 years. My wife is a General Managing partner for a resteraunt chain. The only issue for her maybe no openings. Is orlando to far of a commute to work? I have many hobbies and would love to become a member to some of the great clubs TV has.

It depends on which section of TV you move to. The villages south of 466 seem to have younger residents. We moved here when I was 48 on the north side by Nancy Lopez and was dismayed to find out that I didn't have anything in common with my 60+ neighbors. Now that we've been here for 7 years, things are better because we've adapted. Unfortunately, a lot of my neighbors now are in the 70's and are experiencing health problems. We talk a LOT about illnesses, doctors appts, prescriptions. Anyway, you'll adapt. Everyone is very nice.
As for jobs - good luck. The pay here is less than 1/2 of what I made in Texas. And unfortunately the cost of living is about the same.

We will be off 466 Chula Vista area of Spanish Springs. Being form Texas that isnt much of a vote of confidence.

There are thousands of folks your age in and near the area. They work in all the businesses supported by The Villages. Cable tv and restaurants are growing here, so if you're good, you should be employed pretty quickly. This is a great place to be and you'll be amazed at how many of us geezers act and think like they're your age.

Well, young whippersnapper, I speak from experience re jobs. But come, my husband loves it here. Of course, he's retired and plays softball 5 days a week and golf the other 2. Don't let me discourage you but you do have to be practical about wages if you have to work. I'm just saying.

I'm with texasfal. TV is a great place to live but don't expect a living wage. For most jobs, they don't exist. Even nursing is way below the national average. Many of the cable jobs here are subbed out, so you don't get corporate salaries even though you pay corporate rates. Sadly, restaurant managers are a dime a dozen and paid accordingly. A server earns $3.50/hour (if lucky) and tips average 12%.

While the pay is less, the cost of living is also less --so maybe it will even out for you.

I just had Century Link at the house. In talking with the splicer I mentioned I had retired from Verizon as a Cable Splicer. He said I should call Century Link as they were looking for Cable guys. Hope this helps!

I didn't realize folks younger than 55 can live in TV full time. I thought that was possible only if they were living in the same household with one at least one person 55 or older.

By law, the developer is allowed to sell 20% of the homes to those under 55, but no one under the age of 19 can live in TV. We bought when I was 49, my wife was 51.

My neighbor is 28 years older than I am and usually beats me golfing. I am 24 years older than you. If I can beat you golfing your are welcome. Seriously if you play pickle-ball don't do a lot of running around, no one will want to play with or get to know you.

Dang it ...... I plan on moving to TV because now that I have the reflexes of a 65 year old I want to move to somewhere that I'll be able to out-drive and out-hit all the older codgers in golf and softball. Not fair that I'll have to compete with a 40 year old ringer!!!!

Unfortunately when you move to an over 55 community you will find people who are over 55 who don't like to read that you were "dismayed" about their foibles.

I wouldn't worry too much about your age. You will still have a full time job to go to, and your mother will take up some of your time too. You will enjoy living here, and meeting new people and going to the squares for the music at night. Also, you will meet neighbors who like to play Wii games, or board games.

My husband and I are 60 and 59, we moved here because we thought the area would be a wonderful environment for our son, who is 34, and severely disabled. He loves it here, we love it here. All of our "older" neighbors have really been very supportive. As soon as our house is built in Sanibel, my mother, who is 82, will be moving here, too.

We think it's a very vibrant community! Heck, I know 75 and 80 year olds who have more stamina than my husband and I!:MOJE_whot::MOJE_whot::MOJE_whot::MOJE_whot::MOJ E_whot:

I joined MVP Athletic Club a couple of months ago and while I'm in reasonably good shape for a 50 year old, there are several 70-80 year olds in some of my group exercise classes who make me look like "the old guy." Age is just a number.

Just got back from the villages. Getting ready to sell our house here in Texas and finishing up some other things. May keep a rental property or 3 here in Texas. Market is really good here on rentals.

Met Jennifer Parr (sp) coming out of the Lake Sumter offices and had a really nice conversation with her about Austin and our music film festival here. Had my wife take the tour which she learned even more about the villages. She states she will start the Amasian club due to lack of Asian clubs that she has found.

Other things I have learned.

I need to buy a Disney year pass because this place gets better every time i visit.

I learned Lego land is in Winter Haven after I was there :(

Why is there not one place that serves crawfish in The Villages. had to go all the way to Orlando.

I will miss driving 85.

Bonefish is amazing try the crusted trout

I should not run with my shirt off as i seem to make golf carts and cars run into things.

The job market for me is gonna be tough either I'm gonna have to take a pay cut by half or drive to Orlando. I really don't know how anyone in the area that works can raise a family off wages that i have found. I wont have to work right away so I hope this allows me to find something I enjoy

Consider a Florida resident seasonal pass. About half the price of the annual pass and with the exception of a few blackout dates (week between Christmas and New Year, spring break, and two months in the summer) when disney is TOO crowded anyway it is a great deal. We have annual passes now, but will be switching when ours expire.

Magnolia Oyster Bar and Ocean's Grill in Leesburg occasionally have crawdad specials.

you probably should be heading west to the gulf not south to Orlando. WE get our shrimp, etc. in Homosassa, but there are plenty of places along the gulf.

While you will be able to find plenty of athletic type activities (golf, tennis, softball, cycling (road & mountain), ect .... you might find that other forms of entertainment, specifically music & arts are geared more for .... shall we say, an older demographic.

I have to drive to Tampa, Orlando or Jacksonville a couple of times a month to get my live music fix .... of bands / acts I want to get said fix from.

Yeah I really don't mind the drive except for the speeds. Here in Texas where I am at the Speed Limit is 75 everyone drives 120 so getting around does'nt take long.

We will be off 466 Chula Vista area of Spanish Springs. Being form Texas that isnt much of a vote of confidence.
I know it would be a lot of trouble, but personally, I think
if you could sell your mother's home, you would be happier moving to the new areas
on both sides of 466A- lots of Boomers and younger.
Just a thought.

My mother is very established in the area. We have talked about this and I see how happy she is being here. since I will end up here why not just come and establish myself early. As everyone always puts it. We still young and this will be easier on us to adjust. All in all though I could not pull her away form the villages. when i visit I see the joy in her face.

Thought about this to since her neighborhood is older. But give it 10 years the neighborhood will be baby boomers :) I know it sounds morbid but it is the rotation of the villages.
