Default 40 and moving to the villages

I will be moving to the villages with my wife in 2 years time. This is a really tough choice since we are already established in the state we live in with good careers. Im moving to be closer to my mother taking over her 3 bedroom house and getting her a villa. Economically this is a wonderful oppertunity. The question I have though is will we be accepted within a community being younger. Ive visited the villages numerous times and love the area Im just not sure how we will be accepted in the community. Hope to be able to find work which I dont think will be a problem as our fields are very versitle. I have heard storys that pay in florida is low though. I guess im just nervous thta moving to the village smight hinder us due to our age being younger.

My wife and I recently moved to TV for the same reason; my mother-in-law is getting older and we wanted to be closer in order to help her. We are also younger (forties) but have not encountered any problems here due to our age. In fact, we have been welcomed by everyone we have met. There are still a ton of activities to get involved with (regardless of age) and you can do as little (or as much) as you like.

The job situation can be difficult. Outside of TV it is fairly rural and there is not much opportunity. My wife is an RN so it was relatively easy for her to find work at the hospital here in TV. As a teacher, it has been much harder for me to find work, as Florida is cutting way back on educational spending.

Welcome to TOTV!
Your age won't bother us if it won't bother you! We don't think about age here, we just think about how to gratefully enjoy our paradise.

But, just so you know, I've met plenty of residents who are not yet eligible for Medicare.

Welcome to you! I am old enough to be your...older sister! We met two couples back in July at Red Sauce, both were in their early 40's and lived in TV. Age is just a state of mind. TV is like no other place!

I hope to be able to get in with the cable company, its what i have been doing for the past 12 years. My wife is a General Managing partner for a resteraunt chain. The only issue for her maybe no openings. Is orlando to far of a commute to work? I have many hobbies and would love to become a member to some of the great clubs TV has.

It depends on which section of TV you move to. The villages south of 466 seem to have younger residents. We moved here when I was 48 on the north side by Nancy Lopez and was dismayed to find out that I didn't have anything in common with my 60+ neighbors. Now that we've been here for 7 years, things are better because we've adapted. Unfortunately, a lot of my neighbors now are in the 70's and are experiencing health problems. We talk a LOT about illnesses, doctors appts, prescriptions. Anyway, you'll adapt. Everyone is very nice.
As for jobs - good luck. The pay here is less than 1/2 of what I made in Texas. And unfortunately the cost of living is about the same.

I don't get it? What do you mean being from Texas isn't much of a vote of confidence.

There are thousands of folks your age in and near the area. They work in all the businesses supported by The Villages. Cable tv and restaurants are growing here, so if you're good, you should be employed pretty quickly. This is a great place to be and you'll be amazed at how many of us geezers act and think like they're your age.

Well, young whippersnapper, I speak from experience re jobs. But come, my husband loves it here. Of course, he's retired and plays softball 5 days a week and golf the other 2. Don't let me discourage you but you do have to be practical about wages if you have to work. I'm just saying.

I'm with texasfal. TV is a great place to live but don't expect a living wage. For most jobs, they don't exist. Even nursing is way below the national average. Many of the cable jobs here are subbed out, so you don't get corporate salaries even though you pay corporate rates. Sadly, restaurant managers are a dime a dozen and paid accordingly. A server earns $3.50/hour (if lucky) and tips average 12%.

While the pay is less, the cost of living is also less --so maybe it will even out for you.

I just had Century Link at the house. In talking with the splicer I mentioned I had retired from Verizon as a Cable Splicer. He said I should call Century Link as they were looking for Cable guys. Hope this helps!
