View Full Version : Big Change in Political Talk Room

Has anyone else besides me noticed a big change in the make-up of the usual posters in this room? It seems as though in the past 2 months that the uber-conservatives have lost several of their usual contributers and baiters.
It also seems there are now some newer liberal or middle-of-the-road posters that like to post here. Definitely it is a good change.
Welcome to all, of course, and friendly discord brings about healthy viewpoints to be read by all.

the conservatives like me are busy working for our primary because the deadline to register to vote is jan 3 in florida....there is no sense wasting energy arguing with people who will never agree with us....we must get out there and win the vote to change this country and bring it back to its original greatness....and we ARE the majority, silent no longer.....

Thanks for the reply, Chachacha. Always good to hear from you. Which one of the tea party darlings are you supporting or is it the "anyone except President Obama"?

some may be simply looking for a more fact/issue based discussion forum where an R or D is not hammered 24/7.

Your statement "and we ARE the majority" is totally wrong if you're talking about Florida. As of Dec 5, 2011 (the latest figures) there are 523,567 more registered democrats than republicans in the state. Of course the republican numbers may spike up this month as thousands of democrats, like myself, switch parties so they can vote in the primary on Jan 31, 2012. But I guarantee you I will be a democrat again of Feb 1, 2012.
To read all about it go to www.registration.elections.myflorida.com

What a surprise.
Won't help. Obama and his merry band of leftists are a total and complete failure. Freedom loving Americans know that. On the other hand, if you are anti-private sector, pro centralized government control I guess you could call him a resounding success.
No matter our nominee, Obama will loose. He's a one term disaster. Bookmark it.

This thread started by my buddy Buggy is just a "bait"; isn't it. Are you sitting there chuckling to yourself Bugs?
Maybe if you actually composed a thread that promoted thoughtful debate you would get more replies.

I suppose one's view of the discourse may depend largely on who's ox is being gored. There are two problems with give and take on a forum like this.
1. It is easy to say things anonymously that you might never say in a face to face conversation, and some people affect a confrontational style they would never display in real life.
2. It is easy to misunderstand or be misunderstood. I try to look at any post I make carefully to see if it conveys the message I am hoping to make. Even at that, things are often interpreted in ways that I never intended. The other problem is that often I try to be as brief and concise as possible and end up leaving out important context.
I have had confrontations on occasion on political forums, and they are never really satifying, where in person things can generally be worked out congenially.

It's really hard to take someone seriously when they say "Freedom-loving Americans" while they have a Confederate Battle flag as part of their avatar (even if it IS part of the Lynyrd Skynrd logo).
I know it's another topic, but I no longer believe the whole "state's rights" argument. I've read the Confederate Constitution and it was NOT up to the states to decide about slavery. You HAD to be a slave state. You HAD to respect "property rights" from other states and you were NOT ALLOWED to later abolish or outlaw slavery. Hence, there were no state's rights and that was a smoke screen.

BULLETIN: Judge finds Bugs guilty of "baiting" out of season without a license. Hmmmm.....have we seen this movie before? The judge in a harsh rebuke of the miscreant, ordered:
a mandatory sentence of listening to Rush Limbaugh, 3 hours a day for 30 days,
a thorough read of all Ann Coulter's books and to be suitably conversant with their content before the court,
go to bed at night with earbuds and iPod playing reruns of Glen Beck
and...............the Buggy One must wear an "I LUV Sarah Palin" button to all Villages gathering until election day.
A group of conservatives hailed the verdict while occupying and picketing Starbuck's, a known denizen for liberals and latte, carrying signs that said, "Where's the bug spray?"

All of those sound worse than being waterboarded with Dick Cheney turning on the hose.
Yikes, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck? Nope, I would take the waterboarding.

I and I KNOW others do not frequent this place as much because it is pretty much calling names of those the posters oppose, and LITTLE IF ANY true discussion.
This has become a playpen and many have left where there is actual discourse on issues with respect and where you actually think and learn.
Sorry if this in any way upsets posters, but this is how I see it, and I know factually that others feel the same.

Sooooo.....you call out Coulter, Limbaugh and Beck by name, yet, there is no direct mention or repudiation of Sarah Palin? Could it be a Freudian slip that demonstrates your secret admiration of Sarah? Could you be a closet Palin fan? Interesting you don't protest the part about wearing her button. Perhaps you would prefer the Sarah button to .....let's say......water boarding. It's OK......we understand......she can be irresistible.

Well, let me see, is it better or is it not? Its different, its slowed in volume and the hate has decreased dramatically in the last few months. That does sound like improvement. I altered my posting mentality by meeting one of the best Word-smiths on this forum and since I always had similar views on the direction of his politics, I find I can no longer toss fuel on his flame of political Passion. So I now have to simply agree or disagree without sarcasm, slander, baiting nor even off color humor. Yea, its a little boring now for me, but it is the right way to conduct a discussion. So now, I still stop by several times a day, yet I rarely comment. Unless I have something construction to offer, I read and move on without a post. Hope to run into you again soon RL.

What category does referring to our President as a scumbag and a liar fall under?

There was no mention of who said what to whom or who called who what. My reference a prior post by another member and referring to them as "rules" apply to ANYBODY who post here in political without ANY assertion as to R or D or present or past POTUS. The suggested courtesy was for the general audience....and it sounds like you have a specific issue with a statement by a specific person, so ask them.
In any set of guidelines the very best one can hope for is 80-95% which unfortunately means we will always have the likes of the issue you raised as well as the name calling and the ever present Bushslapping.

I agree Bucco! I know that I haven't put the time and energy into this forum like I used to. I would post honest and rational information, do research on both sides of an issue, provide numerous links with white papers and unbiased studies...only to have them picked apart by folks on this forum who apparently are so highly intelligent as to be above reproach and never wrong. I'm not always right, but I am willing to learn and find truth and admit that I have been mistaken. There are several posters here from whom I have learned ALOT!!! But, going forward on this forum, there are times when there is truly no point.

One poster recently said they always research both sides of an issue and would only post results from unbiased studies - and then have them picked apart from others who believe they are more intellingent than the authors of the unbiased studies.
I find those statement to be differing in what they have posted in the past. The person does have the skills to look up information on a subject and does so quite well - but only will admit to one point of view.
I can feel her passion for her subject matter and therefore do not argue of it anymore with her. Please, though, do not say you post only from unbiased studies. You are a very intelligent person as shown from your writings. I would like to see a more open mind so there can be teaching, learning, and not just preaching. Do not take this in a negative way as it is not meant to be negative toward you at all.

Did this person use the words "only"? Did this person state that they ONLY post results of unbiased studies?...I think not.
Do you know from whence that person came? and what changes that person has made in their mindset on certain issues? Do you know what CHOICES that person has had to make and what TRUTHS that person has learned with much pain and humbling of mind?... I think not.
Skills to look up information?...or experience and hard fought learned difference between facts and fiction.
Have you even so much have cared to ask why that person has such passion for certain subjects?...I think not.
You may say nothing negative implied to this person...THIS TIME...seems to me that this person has been beat up numerous times by you-slandered, mis-interpreted, ridiculed for assumed religious beliefs over scientific facts, mis-quoted, etc... BUT, I am certain that no offense is taken for any past, present or future repeats of such.
