I'm putting this out there for informational purposes. I received this link about two weeks ago and found it profound enough to pass it on to family and friends. We know so many people who are in one form of dementia or another, including my father, who has been afflicted for at least 16 years. I've heard back from a few of those that I sent this to and they have indicated that they had been familiar with the values of coconut oil and are in some kind of regiment with it.
Today I heard back from a friend whose husband is in full-blown Alzheimer's. She said that she started using the coconut oil two weeks ago and has noticed at least one of the newer behaviors completely reverse itself. She's not expecting miracles, he's beyond that point, I'm sure. She does see improvements and will continue using it.
I hope you find it interesting and just maybe of value. Here's the link: CLICK HERE (http://www.cbn.com/media/player/index.aspx?s=/mp4/LJO190v1_WS)

Thanks for that story, very interesting!
Years ago, I used to buy coconut oil, it wasn't easy to find and had to be ordered from a specialty company. It was pretty expensive, but it did taste good... ;) Stopped buying it after a while...not sure why.
Now that it seems to be more readily available, maybe it's another oil we could add to our kitchen pantries.

Probably because it is one of the worst oils you could consume as far as heart health.
I'm not positive about it being the worst oil, Shimpy.
Olive oil is still #1 as far as many medical professionals are concerned.

Bring me up to date. I always heard olive oil was one of the best for you. I may also be mixing up coconut oil and palm oil.

Thanks for sharing, Xavier! Very interesting information. I have actually been using coconut oil for a little while. I even asked at the doctor's office recently and they heard on this, too.

FWIW After much research, I started using coconut oil (organic) exclusively for cooking and olive oil (first press, cold pressed) for salads over 10 years ago. The myth about coconut oil comes from studies that were based on hydrogenated coconut oil, and all hydrogenated oils are bad.
The coconut oil takes longer to heat up and therefore stays "intact" while cooking, whereas the olive oil "burns" easily and therefore is altered in the cooking process. I think that you may have been confused palm oil with coconut, and palm oil is to be avoided. If you look up the benefits of coconut oil, you will be surprised how healthy it is for you. I even do my eggs in it if I am frying them.
The only other oil I keep on hand is roasted sesame oil for steaming fish, chinese style with ginger. And I do oil pulling daily with plain sesame oil to keep myself as healthy as I can and free of pathogens - an ayurvedic practice that really works! Google it, if you want. It is really easy and something anyone can do to help themselves get healthier and stay healthier.

Snopes has a nice review of the status of the information in the report on CBN. It is available at snopes.com: Coconut Oil As a Treatment for Alzheimer's Disease (http://www.snopes.com/medical/disease/coconutoil.asp)
In summary there is no medical reference to support the claim. The claim is made by a person who is sellling a book to promote the claim. The author has a personal interest in the subject as her spouse has dementia which means she is personally invested in hoping the treatment works. While none of that means that there is no reason to refuse to try it, as with many nutritional miracle cures, take it with a large spoonful of skepticism.
Olive oil is a monosaturated fat and these fats are good for us. They help our bodies in many ways....reducing breast cancer risk to some extent, help improve our lipid profile, lower the risk for heart disease and stroke, lessen pain of arthritis, help in the reduction of belly fat, among other things.
Coconut oil is a rich source of medium- chain triglycerides. These are immediately burned by your liver for energy -- like carbohydrates, but without the insulin spike. MCTs actually boost your metabolism and help your body use fat for energy, as opposed to storing it, so it can actually help you become leaner.
Whether it works to help those with Alzheimer's or not isn't known for sure....but it might be helpful to some in maintaining good health. We must all decide what is best for us, work with medical professionals we trust and try to remember that moderation in all things is probably the best way to live... ;)

I asked my rheumatologist about this and was told it's great for inflammation and she said to go ahead and use it. She also recommended coconut water (found at your local grocery stores). Back to the coconut oil...it's great for cooking too. Put a tsp on your cooked veggies while heating and it will give a great flavor...or on your morning oatmeal b/4 you cook it.

I personally get an okay feeling from the Snopes article, especially the last paragraph. As I said, I put it on the forum as an informational piece. (okay, I'll be the little ray of sunshine - someone else can be the dark cloud) There was no scientific reference to support the claim that the earth was roundish, but our hero Chris Columbus didn't stay home!

At the end of it all, it's calories in/calories out. How much food do I have to give up to equal three tablespoons of coconut oil a day? It's a fat. Three tablespoons of fat is a lot to add to your diet, even if it's healthy fat.

...more than likely one "teaspoon" daily is enough....
........The purveyor of the product would LIKE us to use 3 TABLESPOONS per day.
I use ONE TEAspoon ......3 times per day.......after One Month.....I can now go into the garage and usually KNOW why the heck I'm out there.....
...or it could be the placebo effect.....or maybe even the note pad I now carry with me. Who knows! ?
Since there are 3 teaspoons in 1 Tablespoon that is only 42 Calories per teaspoon. (or 126 calories per day)

I was in WD today and checked the coconut oil. It says nothing on the container about cold pressed, extra virgin, or organic, so I asume it's none of those. But I'm wondering why that makes a difference in its effectiveness. It says pure coconut oil, so I assume it's not cut with any other ingredients. Anyone know? There's a big difference in price.

take a quick read (http://www.heartattackproof.com/) you may think twice about oil.
oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects.
The proof is in the results. The patients in Dr. Esselstyn’s initial study came to him with advanced coronary artery disease. Despite the aggressive treatment they received, among them bypasses and angioplasties, 5 of the original group were told by their cardiologists they had less than a year to live. Within months on Dr. Esselstyn’s program, their cholesterol levels, angina symptoms, and blood flow improved dramatically. Twelve years later 17 compliant patients had no further cardiac events. Adherent patients survived beyond twenty years free of symptoms.
I can attest to the fact that it works

Many many years ago Dr. Sears of the Zone philosophy wrote a book titled, "The Miracle of Fish Oil". Fish oil was supposed to be a "cure" for nearly everything including Alzhiemer's, although the word "cure" was never used; it was all based on anecdotal evidence. And the author's wife was in the business of processing and selling fish oil, which says a lot.
I called the USF Alzhiemer's research center to ask if they ever heard of fish oil being a cure for Alzhiemer's and they said, "no". The woman in charge told me that they get phone calls and letters all the time from people who think they have found a cure. People have suggested everything from peanut butter to pickle juice.

Yes, there are a few different diets that will reverse heart disease. One that's been around for a long long time is by Dr. Dean Ornish. and another is by John P. Cooke, M.D. PhD..
The book by Dr. Ornish is: "Dr Dean Ornish's Program For Reversing Heart Disease"
The book by Dr. Cooke is: "The Cardiovascular Cure"
The same diet would also be good for preventing dementia and other degenerative diseases.

I wouldn't give up trying to prevent Alzheimer's disease, but it may already be baked into the cake. (Remember all those cakes we enjoyed over the years!)
Search the following: "BBC NEWS: Large waist an Alzheimer's risk"
Even if your BMI was normal, you have roughly a 90% increased risk of dementia if you had a large waistline at middle age.

Dr Ornish and Dr. Esselstyn are Bill Clinton advisers in his quest to reversing heart attacks.
Also the diet which is a vegan diet has a cute phrase;
Vegan is the new Viagra.
Reason is the blood vessels in certain areas of the body rid themselves of plaque very fast.
Don't ask me how I know!
