To make it simple, a roundabout functions pretty much like a regular intersection, except it is in the shape of a circle. In other words - you make a right turn from the right lane. You go straight in either lane, and you turn left from the left lane. Hope this helps.

As stated above treat it exactly like a four lane intersection. If you wanted to make a right turn you would always enter the intersection in the right lane. If you wanted to make a left turn you would always enter in the left lane. If you wanted to go straight through either lane would work.

However even with the new signs that very clearly show the correct way to drive through a round about, I still see idiots go 3/4 the way around staying in the right outside lane. They will cause an accident and wonder why it happened. And also argue that what they did was OK.

If you're going to take the 'exit' that's 270 degrees around the circle - that's what people are considering a "left hand turn". It's 'left' based on your direction when you enter the circle.

The real problem here is the size of our roundabouts. The same design is used throughout the world but, the roundabouts are much larger , allowing cars to make safe lane changes. We lack this room, and have created something that is not exactly safe. It won't happen, but the safest procedure would be for all cars to enter,stay and leave from the outside lane. Before some of you get all riled up, I agree that roundabouts do work well when the roundabout circle is much larger. Here in the Villages, at times when entering a roundabout, it is impossible to move to the inside lane because of cars already being there.

Yes! But know that "IF" you're in the right lane and someone makes a right turn and you hit them....you will be the one to get the ticket! The person on the inside lane should ALWAYS be aware and make sure noone is trying to pass on the right as they make the turn.

It does seem complicated....but it really is not once you realize how it works! The triangle sign seems NOT to be observed by alot of folks. You know---the "Yield" sign?? I've seen ALOT of folks just buzz on through these, just as there also are "some" who don't adhere to the "Stop" signs.

No, that makes too big of a long drawn out mess. You're supposed to stop in the left lane (all the vehicles are in the right lane so it's safe), turn on warning signals and walk your pet in the circle until it's ready to return to the vehicle (be sure and take your empty popcorn bag with you) and continue your journey turning left at every occasion and intersection that appears! :throwtomatoes:

If you think the ones in TV are small, you should see some of the ones in central OH!! I've had to be real careful going through some of them with my truck - afraid I'll hop a curb......tight curve and not very much lane!

It's really a dumb move to turn right from the left lane anytime! Would you do it on a 4 lane highway such as 441 or 466? I was recently going straight in a roundabout when a SUV (out state license plate) realized they REALLY wanted to go to Lake Sumter Landing, and they almost hit me since I was in the right lane! I stopped and let them through rather than get smashed.

I do not understand why is it so hard for people to simply look at the lane dividing lines ( dashed and solid) and directional arrows (straight and turn) and drive accordingly.

If you are making the 1st right (90 degrees) enter the roundabout in the right (outside) lane and turn right.

If you are going to the 2nd right (straight or 180 degrees) or 3rd right (left or 270 degrees) enter the roundabout in the left (inside) lane and USING YOUR RIGHT TURN BLINKER turn at your needed right.

It helps if you don't use "turn right" when describing exiting the roundabout. While it is somewhat a move to the right, it is best thought of as "exiting" the roundabout. Think of "right turn" or "left turn" only with regards to which lane you should be in when entering the roundabout. As far as not being able to move to the correct lane because someone else is beside you, the best advice I can give is to do what you would do if it were a regular intersection. And that wouldn't be to make a left turn from the right lane or right turn from the left lane.

I will proudly call myself an idiot (but don't usually think it's polite to call others idiots) but there are NO roundabouts where I live in Ohio and I think they are the most confusing thing ever invented. What purpose do they serve other than mixing up everyone except those few people who make it their business to master the art of the roundabout?

Give me the good old four-way intersection any day. How about some stop signs? Or some traffic lights? Easy for everyone to understand. They don't require an extensive set of rules. Stop. Go. Easy!

We have a traffic circle on the university campus where I used to work and I don't ever recall an accident even with all the young, careless drivers. I think people pay closer attention when driving on them and that is part of the successful reduction of accidents. It seems maybe the roundabouts may be too small.

As to roundabout exiting at the first (90 degree) exit and utilizing the outside lane makes sense because drivers in the inside lane exiting (180-270) have a clear shot exiting. However because some folks don't utilze the roundabouts correctly or enter them in an attempt to beat those vehicles already in the roundabout or those vehicles in the inside lane traveling at a slower pace...well tempers flare. My solutions is to signal my attempt to exit whethr in the outside lane or the inside lane and to kinda watch out for the other guy.

By the way exiting from the inside lane is like exiting or entering an on/off ramp on an interstate...you just got trust that everyone isdoing their part with this merging action

Very interesting information. I read it all. Thanks for providing the link. I certainly believe that organization's data, but it does seen counter-intuitive to me. I suppose I'll get better at driving on those things with experience, but they honestly give me the creeps!

But here's my plan......I'm going to give the right-of way (with a smile and a wave) to anyone who wants it or takes it and hope others will graciously grant the same to me if I take the right of way in error. That should work! :icon_wink:

:agree: There is a stop sign at the intersection right in front of our house and I'll bet only about 25% of the people going through the intersection actually stop. Some in golf carts don't hardly even slow down.
