Sounds like a complete waste of time and a big joke to me. You have a couple of right wing wubers talking to a bunch of right wing wubers. What do you expect to accomplish? There are not going to be any Democrats attending the bashing session. It will just be preaching to your own choir. No one is going to have an sudden change of heart and say, "Oh, now I see! I have to vote Republican instead of Democrat!"

buggyone: Validation as to what one believes is necessary and helpful. This speaker will no doubt add to the information already relayed by other sources and by doing so add to the credibility of said information. ACORN was harmful to freedoms valued by you and me. In fact its original and formal founder, a white male, speaking to a NBC reporter acknowledged that ACORN did some despicable things. Why would you not welcome the sushine?

Will ID be required to get in ????
You have to see the irony in this...
"Earlier today, Attorney General Eric Holder addressed the NAACP Nation Convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. What did media need in order to attend? That's right, government issued photo identification (and a second form of identification too!), something both Holder and the NAACP stand firmly against when it comes to voting. Holder's DOJ is currently suing Texas for "discriminatory" voter ID laws. From the press release:"

Read the article and you will see it is for security purposes. Nothing wrong with security, is there? The Attorney General of the US is a Cabinet Official and therefore has Secret Service protection and security procedures are in effect during his presence at any function.
Your ridicule is amazing and also childish.

Will be a good informative meeting for those who are Ignorant of what Acorn was even about. Lots of folks unfortunately out there like that today. That's how the O got in office. If you saw the news the other night when they ask the young people who their favorite founding father is they have no clue. One girl responded "What is a founding father?" How sad this country is. People like that should NOT even be ALLOWED to vote. But thats another topic "Our government schools today" and the dumbing down of America

I don't quite follow your PS. Are you asking if the Attorney General's personal security at a convention outweighs the integrity of voting?
It is two different things completely and for two different reasons.
I have no problem with showing a photo ID when voting but it should be made readily accessible to all without a monetary charge.

The courts will decide if these voter ID laws are legal or not. Meanwhile, couldn't the Americans for Prosperity group find a more timely topic for the meeting, say something happening in 2012 not 2008?

States wanting photo ID requirements are offering them free to voters. This red herring Holder is attempting to hang over states is well transparent...and its about the only thing transparent in the Obama Administration. How can one logically argue against wanting to prevent voter fraud. buggyone you are the one that always comes out front in favor of law and order issues even as respects enborcement of the cartpaths. Please be fair and balanced here you know down in your gut that the only reason Holder wants to fight photo ID's is because its hard to have a dead guy present one to a precinct clerk and that like the guy I television that bragged he voted 17 times in the last presidential election it will now be impossible to do so,,,and guess who he voted for....hint it wasn't the guy who sit in a vietnam prision for six years.

I never heard of anyone bragging he voted 17 times in the last election. I am not doubting you, of course.
Didn't I just say in a post that I have no problem with a voter photo ID? I would just want them to be easily accessible to everyone at no cost. From what I can tell, Florida charges $25 for a state photo ID card and you have to jump through lots of hoops.

buggyone: the news media was doing field work in the black community testing to see if these folks would again vote for Obama. One gentlemen said he voted 17 times for Obama in the last election while 3 other guys admited to vote a number of times but would not offer a number. I have no doubts this type of thing has been happening for a number of years but I was dumbfounded that these four guys would admit it.

There is a good reason for this. Student ID's are issued to all students including residents of other states and students from other countries. Texas would prefer to limit the vote to residents of Texas and not include people from Saudi Arabia or even Oklahoma.

So as a negative to a negative in sentences result in a positive or affirmtive statement does that mean applying the illegal Texas voter ID to an illegal alien voting in Texas makes it a positive?
And most important are you catching many fish?

I haven't been able to find the story you mentioned of the gentleman who said he voted 17 times. While searching, I found this story about PA state rep, Mike Turzai, a GOP lawmaker, saying on camera that the voter ID law PA recently passed is "gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of PA". It would seem, according to Turzai, that the law wasn't passed because of voter fraud but to disenfranchise 750,000 voters.
I would think that the judge that hears this case won't take too kindly to Turzai's remarks as they are played over and over in court.

That didn't prevent Herman Caine, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich from having protection during the republican primary. What a waste of taxpayer money.

I appreciate your position and agree I have placed myself at a disadvantage and wish i had the foresight to have made a better mental note but never did I expect the reporter to get this guy to admit to voting 17 times for Obama. so if I can cite the authority well then it didn't happen Fair is fair

There are many counties in Texas that don't have a DMV. They expect people that don't drive to somehow get to another county to get a photo ID. The court should announce its decision on the TX law by next month.
Presidential candidates can decline secret service protection, as Ron Paul has.

Voting aside.....not even discussing that, and not putting my life in someone elses but it makes sense in this day and age, if the least bit responsible, to have a state photo id. It just makes sense.....the 25 bucks that make people call this a poll tax is stupid...it is offered for IDENTIFICATION and will be an absolute necessity in years to come for sure if it is not now.
You can do very little in this world without such a thing anymore !

I agree with you on this, Bucco. However, you know that someone will gripe about having to spend $25 for ID and will call it a tax - even though it is needed in everyday life. I do not think anyone is so poor they cannot afford $25 every 8 years for an ID card with photo.

With all due respect, you seem to agree with me but you also seem to agree with those who find it outright offensive to ask for this id at a polling place. Perhaps I am misunderstanding

I am actually torn on this issue. It seems reasonable on one hand and seems unconstitutional on the other hand.

The right to vote is certainly protected by the Constitution to the extent that there can be no discrimination by race or gender. There are also provisions that give people 18 years or older the right to vote and a prohibition against poll taxes. Outside of these criteria, determination of eligibility to vote is left to the States.
Freedom of movement is also guaranteed by our Constitution. In 1869 the Supreme Court defined freedom of movement as "the right of free ingress into other States, and egress from them." However, the States and Federal Government have chosen to set the criteria that limit this right. You may not drive without a valid Driver’s License and proof of insurance. There is, of course, cost associated with getting the license and insurance. You may not board an airplane or train without a valid photo ID. Under law, hotels are required to have you produce a valid photo ID. Greyhound does not require a photo so long as you pay for your tickets with cash. However, if you want to travel very far, you have to stay at a hotel. Greyhound does not allow you to crash at its stations and the cities take exception to sleeping on the streets. The police can pick you up and if you do not have a photo ID, count of getting a few nights with free room and board.
I fail to see any difference with the restrictions placed on the right to vote by requiring a valid photo ID and the restrictions of Freedom of Movement by the same requirement. In both these cases, a nominal fee is required to assure the integrity of the election process and the safety of the public. Neither requirement seems unreasonable to me. If a photo ID requirement violates your freedom to cast your ballot, then it certainly violates your freedom of movement.
