Call me crazy but I am considering it. Does anyone know what the cost is to get a permit and how difficult it is?

You should be able to find your answer here.
Sumter County, FL - Official Website - Building Services (http://sumtercountyfl.gov/index.aspx?nid=77)

Why not? There is a phone number, you can call.

You should be able to as an owner, assuming no structural changes which would require a set of plans with an engineer' /architect's seal. The electrician and plumber/gasfitter will have to pull their own permits anyway.

Yes, Bogie Shooter. I can call which is what I was/am going to do but the "answer" is not on the website per se.

Thanks Mulligan. So as the electrical and plumbing are already in and just need to be hooked up, do they need permits? I thought the only permit needed would be to put the hole in the roof for the venting.

Not sure in FL, but in NY as a home owner you can do your own plumbing & elec, you just sign a form, if elec you need a UL cert, $50.
As far as building kitchen etc you may not need a permit it's not structural, nor does it extend your building foot print, but you do need to ask if they say, then follow up in writing to confirm & memorialize their position.
You may not need stamped arch drawing either, again ask.
Also you can use a draftsmen to draw a plan and get it stamped for a lot less if it is needed at all.

Thanks Jimbo. We do need a permit for the roof - structural according to the supervisor who did our build. Hope we find a contractor that can do this instead. The last one fell down on the job so to speak. Meeting with a new one tomorrow.

Each state has it's "own" building codes, so to say "in my state of { } we could do such and such" wouldn't be applicable to this situation. I would call or stop into the district office and ask.
I observed a man whose home is off Odell and it appeared he did his own work to close in their lanai etc., so it would seem you can do your own work...or contract it.

I would be so much happier to contract it for a reasonable fee. But I will check out the story at Sumter County offices.

Yes, thanks. I was just pointing out that the website that you were kind enough to post does not really give you the information. The only way to get the information IS to call.

Read this before you act as your own contractor. If a sub does not pay for material , or pay his workers a lien can be filed against the property by the supplier or the workers. http://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/pro/cilb/documents/florida_lien_law.pdf

Great, so you pay a contractor say $2500 to do a job, thereafter, a lien pops up for $1500 for materiel great.
So now you have another issue to deal with, I'm glad I do most things myself,
but if I were older and unable I can look forward to all the scams

I hope it is fabulous too! Too expensive from both economic and time spent for it to be ok.
