Default Pulling your own permit and being your own contractor

Call me crazy but I am considering it. Does anyone know what the cost is to get a permit and how difficult it is?

You should be able to as an owner, assuming no structural changes which would require a set of plans with an engineer' /architect's seal. The electrician and plumber/gasfitter will have to pull their own permits anyway.

Thanks Mulligan. So as the electrical and plumbing are already in and just need to be hooked up, do they need permits? I thought the only permit needed would be to put the hole in the roof for the venting.

Not sure in FL, but in NY as a home owner you can do your own plumbing & elec, you just sign a form, if elec you need a UL cert, $50.

As far as building kitchen etc you may not need a permit it's not structural, nor does it extend your building foot print, but you do need to ask if they say, then follow up in writing to confirm & memorialize their position.

You may not need stamped arch drawing either, again ask.

Also you can use a draftsmen to draw a plan and get it stamped for a lot less if it is needed at all.

Thanks Jimbo. We do need a permit for the roof - structural according to the supervisor who did our build. Hope we find a contractor that can do this instead. The last one fell down on the job so to speak. Meeting with a new one tomorrow.

Each state has it's "own" building codes, so to say "in my state of { } we could do such and such" wouldn't be applicable to this situation. I would call or stop into the district office and ask.

I observed a man whose home is off Odell and it appeared he did his own work to close in their lanai etc., so it would seem you can do your own work...or contract it.

I would be so much happier to contract it for a reasonable fee. But I will check out the story at Sumter County offices.
